Anyone on here at the game in Ballyshannon today?

Looks like we might avoid relegation!

    Wasn't at it.

Laois sounded bad, but they have the Portlaoise lads and suspensions to come back.

The Kildare match is a big one. Win that and we really should get promoted but it's McGeeney!

Down at home after that. 2 points from those 2 games and it makes it an interesting run in.

I see the Championship draws were postponed due to an objection lodged with the Ulster Council by MacCumhaills re. the Donegal County Board's decision that the Senior Championship be limited to 16 teams.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 Yankeesfan

Killybegs don't want to play senior championship and mccools do. would have thought they could have just switched. looks like mccools may be going to the ulster council/dra. once again the county board have covered themselves in glory.

good luck to Naomh Conaill in the 2009 u-21 championship final on sunday.
bidding for a historic 4th succesive title, I'll be there and cheering them on.

whats evryone else's view on a team trying to create this record? good or bad for donegal football?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,676 ✭✭✭✭smashey

It's a good thing. We need somebody to challenge St. Eunans at senior level as they are looking more and more dominant.

Its fantastic what Glenties are doing at underage level and other towns clubs must do more to achieve what they are doing and put in the effort at youth level that those guys do. St Eunans have dominated for a long time now but are out of their depth in Ulster which shows the standard of club football here at the moment. The back door system has destroyed club football and that reflects on the county team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 237 ✭✭docmartin

back door system is a failure imo.
hasnt helped the so called weaker counties and as the above poster says has destroyed club football in donegal, as with the u21 championship 2008 final being played on new years eve and 2009 final scheduled 7 weeks into 2010.
also the all ireland has lost its glamour since the 90's. who can forget the 45 martin mc hugh kicked in injury time against cavan,
THERE WAS NO BACK DOOR THAT TIME

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,336 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Yeah, I am starting to think like that as well. We've had some great games in the back door, but it also leads to situations like the Cork game last year. And, it does mess up club games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

Ach I don't don't know, we regularly get to Q/F's now, whereas the way Tyrone and Armagh dominated, we'd have been gone long before that, barring lucky draws.

On balance, I think it is better, Fermanagh being the perfect example. It needs tweaking though, Connaught and Munster counties, get preferential treatment due to their championships being smaller.

Carrick VS play Holy Trinity of Cookstown this Thursday in Omagh (2pm AFAIK) in the under 16 Ulster Final, as you know the school won all three county titles which is a great achievement for a school with just over 200 students (half of them are girls) so the school is one hour away from Ulster glory!!

Unfortunatley they were beat in the final today

They were well beat on the end by a very classy Cookstown side, the turning points really were a missed Carrick penalty on 20 mins that would have leveled the game up and they hit the crossbar minutes latter that seemed to take with wind out of the side final score was 2.16 to 1.09 not a true reflection of the game that scoreline.

unlucky, but sure an ulster final is a massive achievement. like whats going on in the glenties/fintown area there seems to be massive development work going on in the carrick area.
can only bode well for the future of donegal gaa

An awful game today. First real test in the league this year and failed badly. We got a fluke goal and were probably lucky not to have a man sent off in the 1st half. Hard to take anything from it really.

Only listened to it on Highland but we seemed off the pace completely. According to McHugh we were to "nice" around the middle of the field (i.e. not dirty enough) and didn't play as a team up front.

The ball into McFadden and Murphy seemed to be poor enough as well (and I read a Kildare man comment on this elsewhere as well). Not too often that Lacey gets switched off his man! Doyle scored for fun while Early seemed to boss Cass, big Neil and Monaghan around very easily.

Is the Down game at home next weekend?

From memory, I think it is. Down were missing a couple of players due to a wedding, so that would explain the Tipp result, to a degree!

I'd say he might put out a less experimental team against Down.

Disappointing result last night. The days of McCool park being somewhere for opponents to fear is well and truely gone. In the second half particularly, Down put up a wall of defenders around their 45 and we seemed incapable of figuring out how to deal with it. Again and again we had men trying and failing to break through that line. We went over and back until we lost the ball. Down then broke at speed and were able to punish us.
In our first 2 real tests of the year we have been shown up. Things are going to have to change significantly or its going to be a very short summer. :(

Aye great result against an Armagh team that were strong favourites. Listened to the second half with Charlie and Martin and it sounded like Murphy, McLoone, Molloy and McHugh had particularly good games. Armagh had a man sent off after around 10 min of the second half.

Well done, Donegal. Be sure to push on now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭RMDrive

Barry Monaghan has removed himself from the Donegal panel? WTF is going on there? Maybe he's unhappy with where he was being played? Anybody know the story here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,336 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Poor enough game on Saturday night-if Meath had been able to keep 15 men on the field for longer it might have been a different story. Still, we essentially play off with Armagh to see who gets promoted. Hopefully a good crowd in Letterkenny for that game. Not sure if we're good enough for Division 1, but given that it looks like Derry, Tyrone/Monaghan and Antrim will be in Division 2 next years, it mightn't be a bad idea to get out while we have the chance!

Heard that Christy Toye played a half for St Michaels today.

With no preliminary round in the senior championship there is no excuse to get this played on time this year, the two first round games should be played before the Ulster Championship game and any playoffs after that and then it down to the last eight. But we all know the county board and this wont happen.

He didn't play for Glenswilly last weekend, but all other county players played a full game. The U-21 players were held out.

Great win! Murphy with 1-03. DL had a man sent off just before half time (1-05 to 0-03 HT score) so they did really well to push on in the 2nd half.
Kielt got 6 points for Derry.

Monaghan or Cavan in the final [CN 1-05 MN 0-05 is the latest score I have]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,282 ✭✭✭Carrickman

Cavan won by 1-10 to 1-09.

Great stuff-I'd love to see an Ulster title coming to the County.

I see the final is fixed for Enniskillen on Wednesday night-pity it's not on a Saturday, but at least that might give Murphy a chance to play for the Seniors at the weekend as well.

If Donegal beat Cavan they will play Tipp on April 17.

Who knows, Tom Comack may even give it some airtime during the 'GAA Programme'

Don't know. It was disappointing that they didn't cover the semi-final on Sat. Pio's country and western show just didn't do it for me!

I'd say they will cover some of it all right but maybe just the second half.

Brilliant-well done Donegal. Really looking forward to the semi-final-I presume will be played somewhere like Mullingar or Galway?

From what I can gather, the Donegal keeper is excellent (but as far as I can recall he didn't feature in the McKenna Cup-would he have played for a college team I wonder?). Murphy was man of the match, but Martin McHugh was really singing the praises of Kevin Mulhern. His own son sounded like he had a pretty good game as well.
