If somebody brings a rifle into the country on a visitors permit, that's allowed. I'm clear on that. My question is, if that person hands the rifle into a firearms dealer here, would it be possible for me to buy the gun and apply for a licence? Would this be allowed? The rifle is a restricted calibre, don't think this…

I think the dealer has to import the firearm officially before it could be bought/sold

Is there a time limit in the visitors permit he had if so the gun will obviously have to return before that or its unlicensed in this country.

cw67irl is spot on.

The dealer can hold the gun while an import is done. Once it's done you can buy it, and license it.
