Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    The Hanover Band.

Maybe not really underrated as such, but certainly not as widely knows as they should be.

Sufjan stevens - consistently brilliant albums for the last 15 yrs and many only know him for the radio friendly 'chicago' and not much else.

Doves. Came out around the same time as Coldplay. The sh!te band became massive. Doves made some brilliant albums and were class live.

    I so agree, <3 Doves.

They have a loyal following, particularly in the US but I'm amazed that The National are not huge here! So many people just have no idea who they are and they are fantastic.

I love The National but they're no longer underrated. They played a near sold-out o2 here last November, they played 2 sold out shows in July in the Iveagh Gardens and their latest album topped the charts here (and other countries) as well as being nominated for a Grammy.

Also another shout for Supergrass. Ridiculously talented band. In it for the Money is one of THE albums of the 90's IMO.

Was just going to say Doves until I saw this :)

Fans of Fifa will recognize one of their tracks, great song!

If you're an American Dad fan there's a great episode where Stan becomes obsessed with them, ends up devoting his life to following them on tour!

DIIV, they make some sublimely beautiful music. I believe working on 2nd album, hoped to see them at Primavera 2012 but drugs, on their part, got in the way.

Also, Google the video for 'Wait' as it contains nudity (female) and spunk bizarrely.

Some classic and highly influential punk bands have near enough been totally forgotten about. Here's 1 for starters.

God no, I always get the feeling when watching him that he is only pretending to be able to sing.

'James' were a great Manchester band I rarely hear getting any credit. They have some really great songs and the lyrics to some of their songs are really like poetry. There's a song called 'sometimes' that is really amazing. Also another song 'how was it for you' about a guy falling in love with a prostitute or 'laid' about a love/hate relationship.

i'm normally a hard rock/metal fan but a really underrated band is indie rock band Howling Bells.probably my favourite band to emerge in the last 10 years.they're not massively known even though they have 4 albums released.their eponymous debut album is eerily beautiful

Funnily enough, they were mentored/pushed by Morrissey. They were much bigger than Morrissey in the early 90s, he wrote We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful about the jealousy he felt at watching them overtake him in the charts and generally become a bigger deal than him.

Of course Morrissey goes on to be a household name for the next 15 years, while James just become that one hit wonder band who had that Oh Sit Down song

James always reminded me of The Big Dish.

Which lead me onto another band of that era.

Bringing to mind other Scottish bands that really are on another level...

    The Blue Nile...

    and the incredible SAHB....

But again, these bands are not "underrated"....just overlooked, often forgotten.

I think the criteria for "underrated" can be applied most fittingly to bands playing in pubs, youth clubs, basements, and bedrooms who will never see the "commercial" light of day..and maybe that's the way its best kept.

.....scolding myself for forgetting The Faith Brothers.

Singing with a socialist voice in "Thatchers Britain"...they didn't stand a chance.

"From all that you elect you cower
    Hypocrisy governs every waking hour
    Humankind is overlooked
    By liars, cheats and crooks
    selling souls for power"

"choose to see in the country of the blind..."

An old thread apologies but this Irish band have a new single. All their old material is just as good. A world class band IMHO.

Why aren't they number one everywhere? What's wrong with the world?

Soundgarden, everyone thinks of Nirvana when they think of grunge but these guys were miles ahead.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,379 ✭✭✭donegaLroad

not exactly grunge, but I used to think the Sundays had a great sound for a band that did very sparse arrangements... their album 'Reading, Writing, Rithmatic' is a gem.

I'm a professional drummer (in piano too) and in college so this conversation comes up a lot. Personally I think Thin Lizzy were very underrated, they never really broke America except for the true rock heads. Brian Downey is probably THE BEST Irish rock drummer of all time. I'd have to agree with a few other posters about U2 though. Love them or hate (or just Bono) them, they are true musicians. In fact there's a story that goes amongst us Irish drummers than Larry Mullen was in the studio recording a U2 album. He was able to hear that the metronome was a 64th beat off. To put this into context, take a slow or fast tempo and count 1, 2, 3, 4. Now that's four notes or 4 quarters. Now imagine 1/64th of that, thats precision. People don't seem to realise drums are an extremely difficult instrument to play well as it takes years in developing your musicality, timing, groove and your fingers, arms, wrists and feet and being able to play different phrases independently of each other limb. In my opinion, they play their instruments to serve the music and not show off. Plus the fact, what other drummer would have come up with the Sunday Bloody Sunday drum track?

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains sold shedloads of albums and were adored by critics. Not sure any of them fit into the underrated category, and when it comes to grunge they'll all be bracketed alongside Nirvana.

Love all their stuff. Pity they released so few albums. Static and Silence, RWR and especially Blind. Harriet Wheeler is the focus of it all....

Yeah back then with Soundgarden and Alice and Chains, but now when I mention them to friends who like Nirvana, they are like who the fook are they?

I think she married the guitarist and started a family.. they probably achieved what they set out to do with the few albums they recorded, a bit like Nick Drake, but he is now highly rated.
