Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I did one week of my work experience in 96FM 2 years ago. I'd say they still do it. You dont do much personally there but you get to see everything, thought it was interesting enough. Red FM do 2 week experiences. Probably wouldnt get a job there for the summer though.
Did my other week in Zavvi. But of course its gone now :(

I am f**ked to put it bluntly.

To cut a long "poor me" story short, I didn't lift a book for the JC, missed over 30 days, generally didn't participate in class & got brutal results.
I know I'm not stupid, I could of done well if I wanted to but I'm a slacker and I can't study.

Anyways, I haven't really got a clue of what I want to do,
I like computers, technology, etc. & I think I excell at them.

I would like work experience but what am I to do?
Where do I get work experience for "computers"

Should I try some courses or classes?

Should I even bother writing a "C.V" mine is a joke.

Computer shops, repair shops, technology shops..?

    I'm lost. :(

my brother was in the same sort of situation last year for college and he's got his degree now in computer games development. I could ask him for ya and link him to this thread. he'll tell ya where to go but see if there's any factories around such as HP, Dell, Microsoft etc. depending on what area of the country you're in it'll obviously be different. hard enough to get into i believe but possible.
If you try this and get no where email the IT department of your local college. I know where i am anyways they'll bring you in, send you to a few lectures, probably show you some stuff and send you home. actually its probably the best experience you can get cos they'll tell u straight up what it takes and what you can do after college.

I'm doing Red Fm myself in March and they seem willing to take on people. I think HMV are fairley good as well as are most big shops that would really appreciate the free help

Has anyone ever done work experience in Beaumont Hospital? I'm working at the A&E desk (office work) and I'm just wondering what to expect. Are heels totally OTT? (Pain isn't really an issue, I'll bring flats). Do you think they'll let me do some shadowing or something more medically than office work if I'm really good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭DancingQueen:)

I worked in an office in Beaumont, wanted to see what it would be like to be a social worker but couldn't actually work with them due to confidentiality issues. I didn't wear heels because i was running around like a mad woman the whole time but if you usually wear them go for it and bring flats just incase.

Not sure if they'll let you shadow, but theres no harm in asking :)

Grrrr, rang RSVP magazine last week and got told to send them an application via email, which I did that day. Still nothing back and I need it sorted by next Monday. If it's a no that's grand but a bit of courtesy wouldn't go amiss. Got my first week in Boots and going to ask around in solicitors offices and radio stations this week.

Im currently on W.E. at an ad agency called Bonfire. Its great fun and a really enjoyable experience, but after 2 o clock, it gets boring xD

Did the Xmas shoebox appeal last week, really enjoyed that one too. There were loads of other TYs working there so thats probably one to go for :)

Im looking for work experience for the first week in feb, want to do something like media,
tried emailin places and ive already been to one radio station which i really enjoyed so want to stay in that area..any suggestions?

Also i see that people were looking for RTE..not a hope. Apparently they select like 5 schools in the whole of dublin(and unfair to the culcies too, lol) and take students from them only, probs fee-paying ones too, but i could be wrong.
Really unfair, as I have heard of people goin there that have no interest in working in the media, and just go cas they have nowhere else and its good on the cv.

    so unfair :(

so i badly neeed somewhere to go!

Yeah, that was her office in Leinster House. I did a lot of different stuff, met some politicians, did paperwork. It was really varied, each day was different.

Work expierence is good. I think they should do it in all schools, and not just with TY's and LCA. It shows you what the outside world is like. workwise!

spent last week on work experience in the local primary school, junior infants can be very annoying at times!!!

Overall week was good, i'd advise it if you're looking for ideas . . .

    Hi
I work in financial services and we've had a couple of TYs recently. My advice is:
    (1) cv what cv... make sure you put in your cover letter that you're very good at EXCEL - mention knowing excel stuff like vlookup. Can't stress the importance of this enough...and if you do get in, make sure that's not a lie (not sure how you can learn this stuff but hey that's what the internet is for). Also if you're good at Maths or even Science do mention that.

    (2) you're more likely to get in if you want to come for 2 weeks rather than one...also doing a full day rather than leaving at 2/3 would help

    (3) probably better to write in to an individual department rather than HR, as HR might just apply their default policy of "we don't do TYs". Even if you don't know anyone's name or job title, make up one - say "Head of Actuarial" or such like...The post guys will make sure it actually goes somewhere vaguely resembling that rather than HR..

    That's it really

Went to a primary school and it was brilliant. Everyone should try it out, even if they aren't sure about teaching.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11 .:x.smile.x:.

Did mine in Microsoft and it was brilliant. If you're into Xbox or video games or technology whatsoever you'll love it. Did it in a Montessori too and it was grand because I got off at 1pm every day.

Hi, if I may butt in. The real prize of Work Experience apart from the experience itself is the fact that now you already have something extra to put on your CV when you eventually enter the wwww(Weird and Wonderful World of Work).
