5.06Km in 40:07 (7:56 min/Km) Club Grounds, Frayne, Athboy, Co. Meath

Legs were a bit stiff from yesterday and, to be honest, I didn’t quite have the motivation for anything longer, so 5Km it was. Even the pooch was still feeling it.

Not that I’m complaining  but the heat felt like I was running around inside an oven. Parts of the field are very sheltered and it was sweltering there, the rest was just good and hot. I pitied the pooch, all I could see of him was a great big long pink tongue:o dragging along the ground behind me.

6.04Km in 43:02 (7:07 min/Km) Patrick Bell Memorial 5K, Bohermeen AC, Bohermeen, Co. Meath

One of, if not, the most sociable races on the Meath running circuit. 800 odd racers, runners, trundlers and walkers. Serious nosh-up afterwards. Open-air turf fires, BBQ, tea, coffee, sambos, as much gold as you can eat!!

It has become a bit of a victim of its own popularity really, with the start delayed for a second year due to the number of on-the –day entries.

Still, the race itself, when it started was organised in the efficient manner to be expected from this club.

The least I say about my own performance the better. Coming off a week where I had done zilch, nada, my mind was not in the right place at all and I found myself stopping to walk around the 4Km mark. Finished the 5K itself in 35:49, a new personal worst for the distance. I have only ever run a 5K slower, and that was deliberate when I accompanied my 15-year old daughter around the same course two years ago.

This running lark has become a bit of a joke over the last while. The best-laid plans have come to nawt recently. Anything and everything has gotten in the way, to the extent that I felt I just had to get this run done in advance of the Braveheart 5K this (Friday) evening or risk a mind-meltdown similar to last Saturday in Bohermen.

Any chance of producing a performance next week at Dunshaughlin are out the window. Tonight’s race is going to be an exercise of mind over matter. This time last year I was trotting through 10-mile runs with no bother.

The only goal keeping me at this is trying to complete 12 out of the 13 legs of the Meath Running League (I was a DNS at my own race in March but will get a bye for that one as I was “running” the race). Tonight is 5 out of 6. I need 8 of 13 to be classified.

MCS... you're out there running which ultimately is the most important thing. Don't sound like you're enjoying it much these days? Try leaving the watch at home....

The problem has been that I haven’t been out there. 5 runs in 3 weeks doesn’t make a habit, never mind a schedule. :o

I’m still enjoying it when I do get out, just feeling more and more frustrated when I let “life” get in the way. Last year I had a bit more determination not to let the little stuff get in the way.

Anyway, rant over. Braveheart 5K tonight. Tune in next week for another exciting instalment of MCS in Lycra. :D

MCS I think I spotted you in Bohermeen. Were you wearing a Red Singlet with NEC on the back? I was wearing my boards singlet, I wasn't sure but I was too shy to go up and say 'Are you MCS off boards"? :p

    Race Report

4.96Km in 36:01 (7:16 min/Km) Braveheart 5K Trail Run, Porchfields, Trim, Co. Meath

A majorly-bigger than expected crowd turned up for this race. Last year about 300 ran, this year 493 crossed the finish line. Despite this the host club did a great job in getting the race started only 6 minutes late.

The last time I had raced in this particular field was in a Meath Senior cross country a few years ago but this time the meanderings through the grassy knolls were of a less severe nature. With a few minutes of the off, the field (the runners, that is) was stretched out over a good 300 metres. I latched onto a group who were running steadily (read slowly) and stayed with them throughout. I wasn’t interested in pace or times, I just wanted to finish and see if I could enjoy the event. I succeeded in both goals. :)

Any problems after the race can be ascribed to the unforeseen numbers, with bottlenecks getting through the finish chute and also into the tea tent.

This running boom is really taking hold. All the Meath races to date have shown increased numbers.

Another easy run. A bit of residual soreness yesterday from Tuesday’s run. Dunshaughlin 10K on Saturday. No target in mind, I just haven’t put in the miles.

The problems I have been experiencing this year have their roots in the fall out from the marathon last year. The post-marathon injury induced lay-off, combined with the total lack of motivation post-race, has left me struggling just to string a couple of weeks of consistent training together. Any time I start to put pressure on the motivation disappears and I take any excuse not to get out for a run. Where to from here, I hear you chorus? I need to get consistency back so therefore I need to avoid feeling under pressure. I still enjoy running when I’m doing it. So I won’t be “racing” any races for the foreseeable. I’ll keep logging times and distances and the multi-various other stats but not during a run. Easy running, just as the good Lord intended, is the flavour of the month. The pace will come back if I can get consistent.

    Race Report

    10.03Km in 1:16:04 (7:35 min/Km) Dunshaughlin 10K, Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath

Arrived at Race HQ in plenty of time, collected my number and went back to the car for a snooze. :p

Strolled out to the start. A couple of boardsies introduced themselves at the start line, good to see that there actually are real people behind these online personas. :)

Race started promptly and we were off. A good crowd, approx 700.

Ran a very conservative (i.e. slow) race. I was determined to run by effort and not by pace/time. Looking at the HR printout in Sporttracks I achieved this, with the pace slowing at the more challenging parts of the course but with the max HR never straying over 80% (avg 145bpm – 76%).

Despite my tardiness in completing the course there was still a gansie load of food left in the Community Centre. :D

    Happy with my performance. :pac:

    Race Report

    6.08Km in 44:29 (7:19 min/Km) South O’Hanlon 5K, Senchelastown, Co. Meath

Things weren’t looking great as I headed out for the race. It was tipping down during the whole drive over. To be fair to the weather the last wet race I ran in was 3 years ago.

Had pre-entered so registration was a doddle. Waited in the car and timed my exit to the start line (about 1 Km from Race HQ) with what I thought was absolute perfection. Jogged out (0.91Km in 7:38), sheltered under the trees, and we were off at 4 minutes past the hour of 8 o’clock.

The rain had eased off into a heavy drizzle as we ran back towards the HQ, passed it and turning left faced into the first of a couple of long drags. We crested the hill in Yellow Furze and started downhill for the next 1Km. Passed the start-line and back towards the finish at race HQ.

    Thanks...

I had a dawning realisation that to finish the Meath Running League I have to do 4 laps of Brendan Meade's field at the Star of the Sea AC Cross Country on Sunday 25th September :o Just the kick in the pants I needed to check in at Hotel Mojo :D It will be the hardest race/course of the year.

Hope your recovery goes well. Use the time off running wisely, unlike me who had put on 10Kg since this time last year. Have just managed to lose 2.5Kg of that so far.

5.01Km in 37:43 (7:32 min/Km) Club Grounds, Frayne, Athboy, Co. Meath

Lovely morning for a trot. I’ve been conscious of not pushing on the distance but rather concentrating on getting out regularly, at least 4 times a week. The pace is coming back slowly.

There is the Meath Senior Cross Country just before Christmas but I think I’d be mad to try and target it. The next race I do have in mind is the Raheny 5 Mile at the end of January. I missed it this year due to the flu (the real sort, none of yer man-flu nonsense :p ).

In other news, my Garmin has departed for the great GPS sanctuary in the sky (appropriate really) and I’m using an analogue watch to time myself. With less mid-run feedback available I’m running by perceived effort. No harm really. The distances are measured by local knowledge of the club all-weather track.
