Hi guys, currently driving a 318d m sport, 81k miles. Bought it when I was driving up to 700 miles a week but now only driving less then 100 so thinking of downsizing. Any idea of the value of these cars at the moment? Cheera

What year is it? Does it have any factory extras over the standard M Sport? Full Service history? How long is the NCT for? How many owners?

Sorry should have said. It's 2008 registration, 2 owners . Full service history. Not full bmw service history but independent garage.

I'd probably start off at advertising it at €12500 and see how much interest you get. If you get no interest then consider dropping the price gradually. Really depends how fast you wanted it sold.

I'm selling my car and a potential buyer is coming to see the car on Sunday. As I understand from the first post, I get his money, I let him fill the reg cert and post it the following day. When should I let him take the car?

You should check and verify all money first. As soon as you are happy that the money is genuine, you can release the car. The registration cert you hold on to and post off.

I'll be selling my discovery soon as I'm moving to the UK and I was wondering what peoples opinion on which sites are best to list on. I noticed the traditional autotrader/cbg sites haven't much in the way of similar models and donedeal has a handful but they're not shifting.

Mk3 (2006). I don't fancy going through all the paperwork as they don't have a convenient one-stop operation as we do here. Plus I'll be moving to London and don't know if I'll have access to parking for it, certainly won't be using it for commuting. On top of all that the resale in the UK would be poor as it's an Irish spec car with kilometer only instruments.

Hi guys, quick post regarding a dilemma I'm now facing. My father is getting rid of his 09 Quashqai and I am hoping to give him the cash for it but first need to sell our own. Myself and the wife now have to get rid of one of our cars - I have a 05 Saab 9-3 TiD (180k MILES) and she has a 07 Honda Civic Type S (90k MILES). The Type S is a pterol guzzler and her road to work is wrecking the 17 inch alloys and tyres on a constant basis. I have a local mechanic who specialises in Saabs and has loads of spare parts etc lying around - timing belt and water pump recently changed and big service just done. Service light been on in Saab for 40k miles or so (just wont reset - all issues cleared off diagnostic) and her Civic has a dodgy wing mirror that needs replacing (approx €200). Our dilemma is which to sell? We would like to get rid of the 3 door Civic but feel we may be waiting 6 months to get rid of it. I know the Saab has high mileage but its easily averaging 50mpg and will go for ever - surely it would go for €2k?. Has anyone any thoughts? Will we eventaully get the Civic sold? I see some people hanging tough around €7k? I'd be happy to let it go for €6k if that meant a quick sale but could it go a lot lower than that? Sorry for the long post..........summarising isnt my speciality!

The buyer might be a bit apprehensive too if the person selling the car is not the registered owner so make sure to have some form of id on you that proves you are the registered owner's husband if asked.

She will also need to sign the change of ownership section on the log book along with the new owner's details, before you send it off to Shannon. Do not give the log book to the new owner.

Just home after selling my car!!! It was in my wife's name also. Not a problem. She signed the reg cert for me yesterday and got the new owner to fill the details. Posted it two minutes later. Happy days

Thanks for the answers lads. He didn't buy it in the end. I might get mangled for asking this and I'm not one bit xenophobic but I had a traveller ring me to look at the car last night...and I have heard horror stories. I'm just wondering does anyone have an experience of this. Obviously I'm not wanting to tar them all with the same brush, I just want to be careful.

Ive a lad coming to see my car tomorrow and hes coming from down the country so if he likes it he'll want to take it away with him tomorrow. He mentioned bank transfer as a method of payment - Im not keen as you hear all sorts (princes in Nigeria wanting your details etc.)

Is cash still king? Car is on for €8k. Also there's some kerbing on the alloys and a small dent in the rear bumper which is in the pics - is it worth pointing these out again as hes travelling a long way?

Not too many genuine people are going to arrive up to your door with €8k in notes. From a buyers point of view it is too risky also meeting a stranger with that sort of amount of money on you in cash.

Bank transfer is the easiest way but you both don't use the same bank then it can take longer to go through. If you both use the same bank then the transfer can be done on the same day. I did this the last time I sold a car, I met the guy at the bank, as soon as the money was confirmed in my account, we signed the logbook and I handed over the keys.

Regarding the kerbing and dent. Nearly all alloy wheels on used cars have kerbing so unless the kerbing is pretty bad then I wouldn't say anything until asked. Most realistic buyers will know that kerbing is common on a used car. If the dent was mentioned up front in the advert and the asking price takes this into consideration then I'd mention it again at the beginning of the viewing. At the end of the day the buyer will probably want to use it to knock more money off the price anyway but if you mention it at the start and the car is priced accordingly then it makes it less of a sticking point imo.

He mentioned paying by personal cheque first and I declined! He seemed ok when I suggested cash - if he banks with the same bank the transfer is grand but if not it's take at least 24 hrs to go through and he wants to take the car away tomorrow.

The dent isnt mentioned in my ad but it is visible in the photos. It is a small dent though.

Personal cheque is a no, no. If he is happy to bring cash then meet him at your bank branch and get the cashier to verify the notes and deposit into your account there and then.

I think I might be being scammed and I wanted to knownif anyone has encountered this before.

I have someone offering to straight up pay for my car (12.5k euro) via paypal without viewing it and have a shipping company collect it.

They offer a reasonable explaination but I'm naturally suspicious of the unusual nature of the offer. Also, those are some serious paypal fees!

Tell them you are in their location on a business trip and can arrange a test drive before buying. Then wait for the deafening silence.... of course it's a scam.

Exactly how does the scam work as a matter of interest? Do they reverse the paypal transaction after pickup or something?

TBH I wouldn't accept paypal anyway, the charges are massive and too many people fail to set who pays them properly.

I think how it works is that they send you the price of the car plus shipping costs and then ask you to forward on the shipping costs to another paypal account they set up.

Right guys , small piece of advice please.
Selling my Ford Ranger , ads on dungdeal and going up on carzone today.
Looking for 5250 (which is there or there abouts judging from other ads) main point about mine is that its never had a hitch on it, purely used as a road car. There is a timing belt due , which is in the ad , and the NCT is due on Friday. Am I mad advertising it as is ? should I wait for it to pass the test and up the price to 5500 ? I'm being very upfront about the 4x4 (possibliby too much ?).
The mileage is quite high , but again those are all road miles , not dragging trailers / horseboxes.

The diesel I'm trying to offload (tax is killing me) has ridiculously low mileage for its age, averaging about 6k miles per year over its life to date. I've a full main dealer service record with receipts, all of which verify the mileage at the service intervals.

Every single enquiry asks me if the car is clocked, and then I get the 'riiiiiiiiiight....' response when I say the service history backs up the mileage :rolleyes: Is there any way to independently verify mileage in Ireland? I imported the car from the UK and have never bought a car here, so don't really know too much about the ins and outs. Cheers.

Thanks, I didn't keep the previous NCTs but have the pre-import checks, import paperwork and all the other bits. Anyone who has actually been out to see it says you can tell from the condition of it that the mileage is genuine, it's getting people past the first phone call that's the problem!

Hey guys, does anybody know what one has to do if Motor Tax is due and the car is still not sold? I am selling a car and have Motor Tax and Insurance expire in couple of weeks. If I won't sell it by then. do I have to fill out Form RF150 – Declaration of Non-Use of a Motor Vehicle or can I just not pay for a new tax disc? I won't be renewing the insurance but I am not sure about the Motor Tax. Obviously I have no intentions of driving it after insurance and motor tax expire.

@Emsloe: Having the same problem, trying to sell Peugeot 206 from 2003 (I bought it in 2009 after it has been imported from UK) which has 34k miles only and that mileage is genuine because I have spent a lot of time outside of Ireland and used it mostly within Carlow town only. But I guess people just don't believe that a 12y old car can have 34k miles...Have you tried selling it to a dealer? I was thinking to drive to Dublin and visit dealers that sell such old car and see if any is interested. I know the price that they're gonna offer me will be much much lower than the price I'd like to sell it for but I am leaving Ireland in a month so I guess I do not have many options...

Any tax arrears disappear when you sell it - the new owner only becomes liable for the tax from the date they purchase it. If the previous owner didn't have it taxed there's currently no way for the authorities to pursue them, so the arrears vanish. There's no need to declare it off the road though obviously you can't be driving about in it either. The tax is up on mine and I haven't renewed it.

I tried the dealers but they were offering pennies on it tbh, both as a trade in against a €20k+ car and as a straight sale. I bought it when I was living in NI planning a huge amount of motorway miles driving up and down to the southeast, and then my job moved me back 'home' so I didn't do anywhere near the mileage I'd planned.

I wouldn't go into too much detail about the work done in the ad itself, while its great that that work is done, it could make the car look like a money pit.
I'd mention recent timing belt though.

Quick question.

I may be in an awkward position of buying before I sell. Heading to England on the 19th to buy a car and if push comes to shove I'll sell my own afterwards.

But if I do it after, then my car won't be insured. So if somebody comes to test drive it and wraps it around a tree that's tough poop?

Might just have to list it cheap for a quick sale and try to shift it inside a week! Are there any auction places etc that I could sell to directly? I spoke to a few local garages but none are interested.

It's a 2012 Peugeot 308 Active with 39k miles. Dealer price online seems to be around €13-14k and private sales around €11-12k. I'm in Donegal.

I'd probably take €10k for a quick sale though.

According to my insurance company that doesn't happen. Open drive or "other car" policies only ever cover 3rd party.

It does happen but it's a fairly recent development. AXA offer it as an add-on to their motor policies and the AA as a broker are advertising it aswell. I'm with Allianz and only have TP cover for driving other cars though.

Being honest you will get time wasters wherever you advertise it, part and parcel of selling stuff to joe public. The trick is to be able to gauge them from the initial conversation regarding the car. Alot of them will make silly offers or ask you what is your lowest price over the phone when they haven't even seen the car. At least some of those half interested in the car will make arrangements to view it and I wouldn't discuss offers until have seen it.

I reckon you should put it on donedeal and see if you get much interest in it. Make sure to have decent photos and plenty of information within the ad.

Ive had a 2009 Volkswagen for sale for the last month. I have it advertised on both Donedeal and on Carzone and all the calls Ive got started with "Hi im calling about the car on donedeal". Also, the ad on donedeal has gotten much more views and it is much easier to edit your ad on donedeal rather than carzone. (Just my own story, maybe its just me).

Regarding 'wasters', your gonna get em. If you can stick out the odd call and text from them every once in a while, then the right buyer will come along eventually.

Put in your ad no swaps, blind bids or best price requests, any that do call requesting either tell them to feck off and advise them to seek a refund for their glasses or English lessons.
