Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was hoping to hit 38 today but after much analysis the reason I didn't is that I didn't run quick enough :)

if it was properly measured and timed, sure

It was 4 laps of our track and timed with Garmin? Our track is 410 or so and I think the watch recorded a longer mile because it normally hits a mile before the 4 laps but didn't. Ah I'll leave it.

Why not run a mile on an actual track? Where are you based? Why run an extra 40 meters when you don't need to?

I'm going to be doing some pratice in Tallaght for the graded meet on the 4th Aug. I'm planning on doing the 1500 then.

More importantly, how come your track is 410m? Is it a grass track or cinder or something?

It's a track built on a compacted tiny gravel surface, I forget the type. It is around the college GAA and soccer pitch so it was the nearest size they could get. I think they did very well with the space the club had to work with. FairPlay to the club members that worked to get it together. It's a great facility and as I say that extra bit is what makes pb's!

True, a real 400m track must feel super quick to yas ha?

But anyways if your sub5 on the 4laps of a 410m track I think we should definitely allow it, the mile column is sparsely enough populated now as is.

Don't know will let you know when I run at Tallaght, I've never been on one before.

Get ultraman out to officially measure it for you, and then you'll know where you stand. Should be able to extrapolate from your 1,500m time anway.

And its on this ramshack of a track that you ran 55 for 400m at the end of a track session. Some man for one man!

Nope, because I train for the event I'm best suited for. That's what most people tend to do. MOST.

Another failed attempt at the 400m (61.13) and followed it up with a pretty woeful pop at the 800m. Write-up on these races here. I was wondering to myself beforehand - should you really go out and compete in a race, when you know with absolute certainly that you're not going to run well - that the time you run may actually be counter-productive, in terms of taking a knock to the confidence? I think the answer is that sometimes, it's ok. Last night for instance, I really enjoyed my track race experience (which is something I'll willingly admit has not happened before), and I found a new hunger for running a decent 800m. So, poor times, good result.

Last night for instance, I really enjoyed my track race experience (which is something I'll willingly admit has not happened before), and I found a new hunger for running a decent 800m. So, poor times, good result.

Not a bad 800 considering you had about 30 minutes recovery tops. I've only once done the 400/800 double. Ran 55.4, had a whole 3 and a half hours rest, and still only ran high 2:17 on that occasion. I couldn't envisage being able to even get to the start line 30 mins after a 400.

I reckon the experience always stands to you - I tend to learn more from times when things don't go to plan, though it can be hard to look at one's own performance dispassionately.

FINALLY, I have achieved a target which I set 15 months ago and which kept eluding me up to now. Starting off over 3 years ago I never in my wildest dreams thought I could run that fast and do it at a national championship. Guess you never know what you're capable of until you try.

I've attached a race report for anybody interested.

Well, that's the 10 mile goal ticked off, though I'd like to have ran a little quicker (I think I repeat those words every time I post though!). Still, a PB is a sign of forward momentum. Race report here.

Worst case could always try and arrange a Boards time trial in the winter for anyone looking for a few of the track times (or just a bit of craic in general)

I think we'd be a bit too marginal to go hand timed on a 400m:D.

Beer before or after the 400m?

Beer before or after the 400m?

I tried the before approach that at the beermile. Disappointed to be just shy on the sub60 mark :p

Beer before or after the 400m?

At halfway surely, no? All you track bunnies talk about taking a breather at the 200 mark of the one lap race so you might as well have a slug or two of brew before hitting the second half.

I just added my 10k time and 1/2 marathon time. Both I'm disappointed with. The 10k time was at the Marathon des Escargots - no excuses, it just didn't happen.

The half-marathon was the Viking Waterford Half Marathon, which was a bit of a mess organisation wise - I know I ran a 1/2 marathon and I know I done it under the 90 mins - but I believe both the distance was too long and the chip time is out by 30 secs. Anyway, official time included although that could be anywhere between 25 secs and 50 secs overstated.

I also updated my 5k time to that I done at the Michael Cahill Memorial in Ballingarry - I used a time from another 5k which I now appreciate was short distanced. Is it too much to ask that a course is accurately measured!

The only other one that I can possible add to the above list at this stage if I do a sub-3 marathon in Dublin - a big ask....

Chipped a few more seconds off the mile time, but disappointed not to go quicker. Had hoped to get under 4.50 this summer, but might have to wait for a more competitive race to do it!

I hope to have a go at this in 2014. Fixtures are thin enough on the ground at the track end of things at this time of the year though there should be enough opportunities to get a time at each distance.

3 times up, my 10 mile will stay there but I hope to have a couple of goes at the 5k and 10k before the year is out.

So we've had a few people trying to bluff their way to sub 60 400 off distance training (which is great to see), so I've been wondering will I be able to do the opposite. I believe its easier to move down to an unfamiliar distance than it is to move up but that doesn't mean I can't give it a try.

I managed a 4:53 in the decathlon 1500m on Sunday, and recovered surprisingly fast after. The sub 5 mile would require specific training which I won't be doing. But the sub 20 5k could be an attempt at the Marlay Parkrun once my season is over and I'm on a break. I won't be doing anything specific for it. Just merely hoping into it and seeing if I can spoof my way through off 400m training.

What odds would the bookies give me? I'm thinking 7/2 and that my lack of mileage coupled with the fact I am on a break may catch up with me. Thoughts?

Very good. Perhaps we could set up a 'Sub 20 min 5k Challenge' thread and follow it on there?

Would be shocked if you didn't break 20 or even 19 with a 4:53 1500 recently even with the lack of mileage.

    Personally I would say

    Sub 20 - 4/7
    Sub 19.30 - 5/4
    Sub 19 - 11/2

You ran that 4.53 at the end of a decathlon in poor conditions so there is more in the tank. Most calculators would put you at around 18.30ish but are based on an more aerobic background so on a decent course I would say that 19 would be a better target however given Marlay's profile I reckon 19.30 would be in or around the target if weather is decent and you pace it reasonably well

Would he be that big? 11/2 seems massive and odds against for sub 19:30?
He's already proven his stamina with a 9:07 beer mile :)

Given Marlay course profile I think that will add about 20-25 seconds in a distance trained runner but someone aerobically lacking you are talking a bit more, add in the fact that the hill mid race will more than likely have a compound effect later in the race meaning that a straight 50/50 shot for sub 19.30 is slightly stacked against.

Hmmm, the reason I said Marlay is because it is right beside where I live. Is there any flatter parkrun courses nearby?

    Naas is the flattest!

I've never run in Tymon, but St Anne's is definitely the flattest I've done (and I've run Naas).

I'm convinced Tymon is slower than Marley. I've done 17.40 at Marlay but only 17.49 at Tymon. I find the last mile at Tymon quite a drag off the back of a quick middle section. Once you crest the hill at Marlay, you can really fly to the finish.

That said, Marlay has more depth and so easier that way. At Tymon you can end up running isolated which slows down times.

I plan on doing St. Anne's once I break 17 minutes. Maybe I will attempt it there.

I've run faster in marlay too. But he asked for flatter courses nearby

Anyone know what the new one in Waterstown is like?
