I've updated my summary of products/functionality available on LEAP, which brings together all of the information publicly available. I'm doing this due to reading regular questions on boards.ie, and due to the fact that I think that the level of information available on official sites leaves a lot to be desired in terms of collating the information in one simple location.

If you do spot something that needs updating let me know.

I've updated this thread for the additional functionality that has been added recently, including:
    • LEAP now valid on Bus Eireann Waterford City services and Waterford-Tramore route 360 service
    • LEAP now valid on Fingal Link Skerries-UCD service (10 Journey option only)
    • LEAP now valid on St Kevin's Bus Dublin-Glendalough service (Return ticket option only)
    • LEAP now valid on Express Bus between Coolmine Station and IT Blanchardstown
    • Additional load point added at Dublin Bus HQ on O'Connell Street
    Future developments will include:
    • LEAP epurse to be launched on Cork Suburban Rail services to Cobh and Midleton

    TOPPING UP LEAP CARD E-PURSE

The LEAP card e-purse can be topped up a number of different ways:
    • At one of over 400 Payzone LEAP card agents around Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.
    • At any LUAS ticket machine
    • At any Irish Rail ticket machine in the Short Hop Zone
    • Online at www.leapcard.ie - Note that this option requires you to subsequently visit your nominated "load location" to physically load the top-up amount onto the card. Note that online topups cannot be applied to your LEAP card via Dublin Bus or indeed other bus operator onboard ticket machines due to their memory constraints.
    • Via Auto top-up - this is the easiest way of topping up the card. It automatically tops up your Leap Card with funds from your bank account, whenever your Travel Credit balance falls below €10. You can choose to Auto Top-Up by €30.00, €40.00 or €50.00. Note that this requires your card to be registered on the LEAP website and a direct debit to be set up.
    • You can also use the LEAP card reader in the front window of Dublin Bus HQ, 59 Upper O'Connell Street, Dublin 1 to check your balance, collect online top-ups and to collect taxsaver ticket renewals.
    • You can also use the LEAP card reader in the Bus Eireann bus station at Parnell Place in Cork to check your balance, collect online top-ups and to collect taxsaver ticket renewals.
      =============================================================================== ==========================

There's a load point in Cork bus station that sounds very similar to one discribed at Dublin bus HQ or balance check and ticket collection.

How much does the Annual Dublin Bus/Irish Rail Short Hop ticket cost for a student?

There is no student version. Only an adult ticket.

Students are now covered by LEAP capping as outlined above, and those on Dublin Bus only can get 5 day and 30 day Student Rambler tickets which offer non-consecutive days travel.

    Hi,

Great Thread. Thanks for doing it.

A quick question. I have switched my kids from the old yellow 5 day ramblers to Leap cards some time back. Have just found a load of the ramblers and I don't know if they are used or not (we used to buy in bulk). Is there an easy way to check (e.g. the machine at O'Connell St)? Any help appreciated.

Bring them into Dublin Bus HQ in O'Connell Street and they can check them for you.

And thanks for the kind words - I started this simply because of the sheer volume of queries that people posted here.

Quick question for someone in the know - was getting a bus this afternoon and the driver misheard me and gave me a ticket for €2.05 instead of the city centre fare. When I noticed I asked her was it possible to cancel the previous one and reissue the proper fare and she said no, cant be done.

Just wondering if it actually is possible and the driver wasn't aware or if you actually can't cancel a ticket on a leap (if it makes any odds, I noticed before walking away from the cab, only a couple of seconds had passed)

In the grand scheme if things, its €1.50, I dont really mind, mistakes happen, I just found it strange that there is no way to cancel a ticket

They are able to annul a fare.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,647 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

If a driver is unsure how to or thinks it can't be done you have 2 minutes to avail of an annul.

Ask the driver can they annul the transaction and if they are not sure the following is the process to allow an annul.

Place card on machine and the driver has to press the "C" cancel button which then the screen will show Annul transaction at lower part of screen.
Driver then presses arrow that ligns up with Annul and a ticket with the annul will be printed.

Then you can get correct fare deducted.

what's the story when you board a Dublin Bus close to the end of the route and use the right-hand validator? Does it deduct the appropriate fare to the last stop, or does it always take 2.60?

Always takes €2.60 no matter where or when.

If you are going short distance always use main ticket machine and state destination.

It will always deduct €2.60 (except on Xpresso routes or where you have a rambler ticket loaded onto the card).

    The card/software isn't that smart I'm afraid.

    Hi,
Really hoping you can help me because as much as Ive tried to understand
the leap card really confuses me! Im getting the bus from Prosperous, Co.Kildare
for 5 days a week for college into Dublin. I got my student leap card today..
I travel with Bus Eireann so does that mean that I have to buy a 7 day top up
for a student every week and that covers me everytime that I get on the bus??
Really really confused..Also can I top it up with say 200 euro at the start or do
I only put in a set amount each week? Thanks so much

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,560 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

    OK your options are:

Student 10 Journey Ticket (NOT on LEAP):
    Buy from Driver - €47.50
    Buy online - €45.12

LEAP 7 Day Blue Zone Student Ticket (allows unlimited travel over 7 days) on Bus Eireann services between Prosperous and Dublin - €51.80

So in essence, unless you are going to be making more trips than just the 5 return journeys, in your case, you are better off buying a 10 journey ticket.

You can still use LEAP for occasional travel or for use on Dublin Bus/Irish Rail/LUAS.

Yes it does - but if you buy it to start on a Monday morning then you will use it up by Friday if you are travelling every day.

Thanks so much for your help! So I just am curious then
if I drive to Clane every day and get the bus from there and
get a 7 day leap card thing does that mean it is only 40.50 a
week student? And if so, then my next question is do I top up
the card with the bus driver and give them the money or do I
top it up in a payzone place and trust that theyve topped up my card
so if I top up 42.00 then thatll have me covered for a 7 day green zone
leap card?? Sorry I am so clueless on this

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,560 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

    OK, from Clane:

    Student 10 Journey ticket:
    Buy from Driver - €40.50
    Buy online - €38.48

LEAP 7 Day Green Zone Student Ticket (allows unlimited travel over 7 days) on Bus Eireann services between Clane and Dublin - €40.50

Again in that case you are better off buying a 10 Journey ticket online to start each Monday morning if you are only travelling in and out of Dublin 5 days a week, rather than using LEAP.

If you do use LEAP, you can top it up at any Payzone agent that offers LEAP topup (check online at payzone.ie), or any LUAS ticket machine or any Irish Rail ticket machine within the Dublin Short Hop zone.
How do I use my Leap Card on board Bus Éireann services?

    Travel Credit
1.Go to the driver and ask for a single ticket to your destination and inform them you are buying your ticket using Leap Card Travel Credit.
2.Hold your Leap Card to the target on the driver’s ticket machine and the correct fare will be deducted from your Travel Credit.

1 day or 7 day tickets
1.Go to the driver and tell them which of the above tickets you want to purchase e.g. 7 day Red.
2.Hold your Leap Card to the target on the driver’s ticket machine. The cost of the ticket will then be deducted from the balance on your Leap Card and the ticket will be uploaded to your Leap Card.
3.To use the ticket there and then, put your Leap Card back on the target on the driver’s ticket machine.
4.When you take your next journey, simply place your leap card on the target on the driver’s ticket machine. If you purchase a ticket through a Payzone agent before you board the bus, then only steps 3 & 4 apply.

How do I view my Travel Credit balance?

You can view your balance on the ticket machine on board the bus or ask the driver. If you register your card at online, you can also view your balance on you online account.

    OK, from Clane:

    Student 10 Journey ticket:
    Buy from Driver - €40.50
    Buy online - €38.48

LEAP 7 Day Blue Zone Student Ticket (allows unlimited travel over 7 days) on Bus Eireann services between Prosperous and Dublin - €40.50

Thank you so so much Im really sorry for wrecking your head but I really appreciate the replys thank you :)

Make sure to register the card on leapcard.ie too in case it gets lost/stolen (if you haven't already).

Yes - it offers unlimited travel on all Bus Eireann services within that zone.

That adds really good value to the product.

I assume the BE Zonal Leap products are Consecutive days...?

Is there a way of checking balance/travel history with a student leap card? Basically i want to see how much it's costing me every week so i can set up a monthly auto topup. 3 days a week Blanch to Parkwest which is 2 buses within 90 mins and no return journey. I tried logging in on the regular leap card site but it doesn't recognise the number

Have you registered the card? You need to do that before you can see the travel history, and remember that it will take 24 hours for bus travel to appear on the history (bus info is downloaded each night when the bus returns to the depot).

What route are you taking? I can tell you what the fares should be.

I tried to register it but it doesn't accept my card number, it says it's invalid.

I get the 39a from Blanchardstown to city centre, then the 79a to Parkwest.

    Fare information:
    • 39a fare is €2.60 to the city centre using LEAP (use righthand validator)
    • 79a to Parkwest fare is €2.05 less €1 LEAP90 discount - €1.05
      • Ask the driver for a €2.05 fare and the system will apply the discount automatically assuming that the second bus trip starts within 90 minutes of the first
    • Your total fare should be €3.65
Regarding registering the card - did you enter only the first 10 digits?

If you are still having problems with registering, give LEAP a call on 1850 824 824.

Depending upon where you're coming from in Blanchardstown the 76a might be of use - it would be a shorter trip than going all the way into town.

Fare from Blanchardstown Shopping Centre to Ballyfermot Road would be €2.05.

76a timetable is here (note - it is very limited): http://dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/76a4/

Wow thanks! Yeah i only enter the first 10 digits but it won't accept it. I always tag on with the validator on the 79a, cos i thought parkwest was near the end of the route, no? The 76a would be perfect but they don't have any buses at the times i need.
