Does Supervalu/Dunnes send out Spend&Save coupons regularly? With every quarterly mailing? Trying to decide should I sign up for their loyalty scheme

  • Registered Users Posts: 746 ✭✭✭Thegalwayman

Thank you for your patience in the matter.

My Business Support Team has confirmed that our store will be accepting these and this should be available in all Tesco stores within your area. These include competitor coupons from Dunnes, Superquinn, SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi.

If there is anything else we can do to help, please do contact this office again.cleardot.gif

    Kind regards

Thats what they sent to me. I'm based in Galway

I already said that in post #54

    Thank you for your email.

This is the email I got which included the store list when I enquired.
(I did ring Mahon point c/s before the reply and they also said no)

I can confirm the Mahon Point Tesco store, isn't accepting the Supervalu competitor vouchers which you have, for which I apologise as I understand it may be inconvenient for you to shop elsewhere.

For your further information, I have attached a document which highlights all the Tesco store where the vouchers are accepted. I do hope this is helpful.

If you should need any other advise please let me know.

    Kind regards

I dont know about Dunnes but Supervalu tend to send out coupons for coming events, e.g. Halloween, Valentines day, Christmas, usually of the form spend 70euro get 12 euro off. So yes well worth joining them for the likes of that

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Does anyone know what exclusions Tesco has with this promotion?
Is it valid on gift cards, clothing etc?
Query is in the context of a money off coupon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 613 ✭✭✭Snowc

Why don't you ring them and let us know ?

  • Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 5,842 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quackster

This promotion is available now in ALL Tesco stores (except Tesco Express).

Saw the signage in my local store today but no sign of any leaflets with T&Cs.

Tried this in Maynooth a few weeks back, didn't work, the chap said they were told they couldn't do it anymore. He agreed it was thick after they announced it, funnily I haven't been back to Tesco since

My Aldi Sindo voucher was also accepted this evening. They now have leaflets at the tills with the following:

"We are happy to accept ANY Spend & Save coupons from Dunnes Stores, Superquinn, SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi."

amazing how they can accept competitors vouchers now. It shows the desperation they have to keep customers that are deserting them in droves to go to aldi and lidl.

anyone find out the answer to this after?
because with all the €10 vouchers appearing in tomorrow and sundays papers for aldi and lidl, if Tesco included giftcard's in this offer it'd be a very handy way to get an elec picnic ticket.

deadly...didnt know there was more coming

mine was accepted wed in tesco
it go me 16 frys turkish delights for 10.40 so free
    thanks to this

    I hope they do.
My plan is to buy the
    Indo newspaper €1.90
    e40 call credit €40.00
    Miscellaneous €8.11

Rip out the coupon and give it to them.

It's not made clear anywhere but I would say more than likely you should be fine. I'd imagine the only exclusions are what they're legally prohibited from including (medicines, infant formula milk, lottery tickets etc), fuel and their own gift cards.

Tesco always was and still is a rip off. I avoid if at all possible, although sometimes there's a need.

I do most of my shopping between lidl and Aldi and the remaining few bits via Tesco online or the odd trip to dunnes.

Saves me a chunk of cash and time every month.

Will rather spend my 10€ Aldi voucher in Aldi. I did a full shop in Aldi last time, adding a few 'fancy items' (the ones you pick up on a whim after crossing every must by items off your list), and still the grand total came to 53€. The last time I spent 53€ in Tesco, I had far less items in my trolley

Aldi have yumyum Easter eggs now.

    Yep, they're way cheaper.
The whole price match from tesco is complete bollocks too, they match on a few branded items that Aldi and Lidl have, but the vast majority of what Alsi and Lidl have is their own brand and not available in Tesco. Taking people for stupid

Just had a look at the voucher and the only exclusion is baby formula so if Tesco are 'honouring' them it must include mobile top-ups/gift cards/itunes etc!

There's other things they can't legally accept vouchers for; which Aldi doens't sell and hence wouldn't mention.

However, they seem quite willing to take them for anything legal even if its going to cost them huge amounts.

This is reactionary and, I think, out of character for Tesco. They're obviously staring into the abyss and don't like what they see. It's a good chance for customers to turn the tables and exploit Tesco, for a change.

I imagine Tesco's expansion into small/medium town Ireland has been a disaster for them since customers discovered that, not only were Aldi and Lidl cheaper than them but, often, Supervalu and Centra were too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,624 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

    Supervalu and Centra were too.

Now that should be a worry to Tesco!

It was the old 'Treasure Island' quote from a Tesco C level exec that turned me off them a few years back. That and their British coloured branding.
But I will give them credit for their efforts in promoting the Irish language which are at least promising! So I'll reward them as they do more.

This could kill off the chance of any store coming out with vouchers again.

Why would a retailer bother to plan and pay for a voucher campaign when the others will accept them. And they will all follow suit for sure.

Considering we've just had repeated vouchers by Aldi whilst this was going on it appears they really don't mind. And no, I doubt the others will do it as they aren't suffering badly from customers finally seeing through the smokescreen over high prices like Tesco is.

Accepting these is a desperate act, no more.

I did a survey for aldi as night on the vouchers and they asked about taking other firms vouchers which would be a good development

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,429 ✭✭✭Kenjataimu

I used my aldi voucher in tesco, bought the usual bits I can't get in aldi as I always do and 20euro phone credit.

Then went over to aldi and did a 40euro shop. :-)

The vast majority of people will spend a Aldi voucher in Aldi. A minority will be aware and actually follow through with using a voucher in another chain.

Is that your own assumption Fungus?
I work in tesco. And last weekend was a very very busy weekend. Lots of it due to that voucher thing. Papers where sold out very early. And we where restocking shelves all day.
It was fairly well advertised through social media. People are very clued in these days on what's going on.

Net result: Tesco lose a huge amount of money with very little outlay by Aldi but its Aldi everyone thanks for it. Aldi 1 Tesco 0.

Tesco are not going to recover market share with stunts, they need to actually reduce prices, cut the promotional bollox and market the hell out of having done so.

    100% agree with you.
Must have been a lose at the tills for sure.
But it is part of a strategy . How it pans out long term. I dunno. Im sure both big global size stores have smart thinkers on the payroll trying to turn a profit.

I don't get this strategy of chasing market share which is what Tesco is doing because Supervalu are on the verge of supplanting them as No.1. If it was me I would be prioritising profitability. If you sell stuff at a loss (which they have to be doing when they are taking an up to 20% hit on sales with these vouchers) you cannot keep doing this long-term.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭Whiplashy

I was talking to an Aldi store manager this evening and asked him about this. He said they're thrilled that Tesco are accepting the vouchers as it shows that they're getting worried :D It also means that Tesco are taking some of the hit for the loss involved while Aldi are getting all the good publicity. There only seems to be one real loser here...

I personally think its about getting people back in the door . Even if its at a loss. Apparently they have new staying low prices on essentials that are being heavily advertised. Plus the Price promise thing (love it or hate it) .
They will get returning trade with it.

Supervalu are 1% behind them, but they bought that market share with the take over of superquinn rather than earning it for being better .
Supervalu are in is much poo as tesco and dunnes with the german invasion.

Interesting reading here with regards Aldi . New news
