Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We'll just have to wait and see what appears. I haven't received my invitation to the launch as yet! :D

So how will this be better? What can we expect in terms of a search? I haven't really been following this. :o

I think they said a while ago that it would be an improved version of what's on familysearch with mothers' maiden names added retrospectively into the index back to 1903.

The GRO version should include the few sections missing from the FamilySearch version, also presumably a second go at the transcripts and and also hopefully provide a better district search. The FamilySearch version seems to get confused by searches involving districts that have the same name as a county - Cork, Wexford etc

It should go newer than 1958 also.

Well, this database was not compiled from the Familysearch microfilms, it was done afresh, so there's no reason to cut it off then, but I suspect they might leave it at a very similar date. One could make the argument for having deaths up to a much later period but for ease, they'll probably pick one cut-off date. Most people born in 1958 are still alive.

50 years rolling is a common cutoff date for genealogy access to DBs like this - ScotlandsPeople (which uses 100 for some, 50 for some etc) releases on 01/01 each year.

I don't see anything new on the site yet - they must be holding back for the official launch time. Usually these things are hanging around on the site already on the day and then they just make a fuss at a certain point.

I've had a look round their IP address range also, and nothing definite showing up yet, but there are a few IP address they own giving no access, or a default server page.

Maybe they are enjoying watching us standing around, hopping from foot to foot! :D

Do we have the actual link to the site that is due to go live today ? Is it www.irishgenealogy.ie?

That's what I'm assuming though I don't know for absolute sure. Could they surprise us all and design a whole new webpage for GRO indexes alone? I doubt it; it's a case of wait and see.

Anyone know what time the media launch is at?

Sorry. I hadn't spotted that others had asked the exact same question already today :)

Getting the impression that I am not the only one waiting for this!

Just looked at Clare Santry's original blog entry on this topic. She states that she has been invited to the launch this evening. So there may not be any updates on line until later this evening..can't wait.

    *web server explodes under load*

edit: Actually, it maybe has exploded already: http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

edit2: Its there under the search page but has Daniel McGarry hard-coded in as the search term. You can enter your own search after that. Marriages show both partners after a certain date, not sure when yet.

CAn there really be that may people who know of the launch and that would be interested in searching to the extent that we could crash the server? Seems very last century :)

Its running very slowly on a gigabit connection here.

The filtering is horrendous, it doesn't reset when you change names.

Horrendous web design - search results section and results presentation look like something I might have done in 1996.

    FBVi1PD.png

I don't mind the searching so much but it's difficult to filter through the results in an efficient way.

The better news is that I'm getting birth results until Dec 1995

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Coolnabacky1873

They cover births up to the early 1980s anyway as I just found my own index in there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,538 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Whoever did the transcriptions varied between sloppy - I've found a "honora" as "hanora" and a "yvonne" as "yuonne" (I have both certs on paper) to scarily determined - there's a mothers maiden name transcribed correctly when I never figured it out from the paper cert.

Births for some eras at least have the real DOB rather than the quarter which is a huge boost for finding further records on Ancestry or similar.

The changing face of Irish society.

    Party 1 Name Murphy Nwanta
    Party 2 Name Marta Kowalska
Date of Event 16 November 2007
    Group Registration ID 1560502
    SR District/Reg Area Kilkenny

Genealogist in 100 years will be asking what country they can trace their immigrant ancestors to!

My exact uncommon but not unique name is showing births to 1994 and marriages to 2012; I'm going out on a limb to guess that everything is up to the 2013 mentioned on the search box. Huge benefit for those trying to chase down more missing lines.

"Mother's Birth Surname" i.e. maiden name doesn't seem to be included for pre-1900 births. I'll see if I can get a more accurate date.

Yeah, that only started in 1903 (I think that's the year)
