The Vectrex is probably what this retrogaming hobby is all about.
Its common but rare, as in its around for sale but expensive to ship.
Its display is, quite simply, unique.
Its got some good games out for it.
Its got some seriously amazing homebrew that can be played along with everything else ever made for it on the Vecflash of Vecmulti carts.

I have mine nearly 10 years now and I still love it.

I still have a blast with Rockaroids, a perfect Asteroids clone, brilliant stuff.

So, to recap, buy a Vectrex asap, contact Richard Hutchinson and get one of his flash carts!

The display definitely looks amazing alright,
and you simply cannot emulate that beautiful bright glow with an emulation,
as your display is not physically capable of matching that type of light.

To me it's like an old analog Oscilloscope vs a newer digital one.

Those waveforms just look so much nicer, and rounded on an old Oscilloscope,
rather than thin and "perfect" looking on a digital scope.

I would love to do an oscilloscope mod on the Vectrex actually for use with my synths.
It would give me another reason to buy one.

Edit: moved it into this post instead! You were too fast for me EnterNow! ;)

Wow! You've been well into your retro gear a long time then.

Does anyone know if it sold in Ireland back in the day?

And if so, did anyone know friends who had one?

Was checking out Richards sd cart alright, its essential
That 3D imager thing is crazy too, I would almost be tempted to do the DIY cd player version myself, the vectrex looks amazingly 3D as it is, I could only imagine it with the 3D Imager.

Well with the small selection of games available that is, and i supposed you'd need the overlay for those games which use the imager also.

I'm a bit OCD with the edits alright!

If i took my time getting each post correct, I'd be better off,
but that goes against my impulsive nature!

I was thinking about those older laptops with S-Video out the other day.

Has anyone used them with their emulators, so they could plug them into their CRT TV, and hide the pixelation a little?

I'm guessing the Mame Cabs use a custom PC with an analog video output?

Or maybe some way of converting VGA to their CRT?

    Why yes, yes I am.
I have had most of my collection when it was new tech, some, like the 2600 and Vectrex I got later to complete my childhood wishlist!
Does anyone know if it sold in Ireland back in the day?
It did sell here but because of the cost and competition from the cheaper, more popular though inferior 2600 it didn't sell many units.
And if so, did anyone know friends who had one?
I have yet to see a current owner who had one or a person who used to have one, odd that...
Was checking out Richards sd cart alright, its essential
    It is alright.
I have the older serial port one, perfectly functional and suits me.
May upgrade to the newer model someday, we'll see.

I'm not sure what the story is with the imager, never that bothered tbh.

There are a number of overlay resources out there and they'll show you how to fabricate your own with inkjet compatible acetates and correction fluid.
It looks quite painstaking but the results seem quite authentic.

Many of the professional quality homebrew for the Vectrex come with overlays of their own.

In fairness to the seller, if he'd put it up for 18e the first poster would probably have offered him 2e for it.

They're both as bad as each other, that's what caught my eye about it.

Seller - Typically overpriced Adverts ad
Buyer - Typically undervalued Adverts bid

Real chicken and the egg situation there.

Did people start putting up high prices to deal with the low offers? Or vice versa.

I have no problem with someone putting a SNES up for 100 if they are willing to come down severly in price, its how a lot of markets work, but most adverts sellers work like this

Seller "20 euro gift voucher for gamestop, selling for 40"

Buyer "I'll offer you 2 euro for it"

    Seller "Way too low"

Buyer "Ok then, how about 19, fair price I think"

Seller "No, lowest I'll go is 39.90, this gift voucher has a lot of sentimental value to me and that means its worth a lot more to everyone else......check ebay!"

I might be featuring in this thread myself next week, listing a nes, region free, new 72pin and about 13 games. 4 boxed. was thinking of putting it up for 120, what you think?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,811 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Well, if his reasoning is correct my PS collection alone should pay off the mortgage!
Can I move to his parallel universe please?
Maybe the Jaguar ruled the early 90's console scene there and the Snes was a seldom bought wanna be? Could be one explanation for the pricing!
The other is that he hasn't a clue and is chancing his arm...
Someone offer 60 and see if he bites! ;)

off topic but if you ever get a spare copy of gauntlet/ gauntlet II on the nes you feel like selling at a reasonable price let me know.

I might be interested in that, depending on the games!
