This thread is for announcements only of forthcoming public nature events
Any discussion related to this please use the forum feedback thread

I don't have many guidelines for now (I'm not good at that sort of thing :o )
But will edit this post to include some if need be. Perhaps help me out using the feedback thread.

I will remove posts at my discretion if I feel they are not in keeping with what this thread is intended for.

One guideline for now, please mention any charges that may apply.

I wont sticky this but will place a link in the sticky thread. Hopefully it'll remain current and near if not on the first page.

    To kick things off.
2 events in Wicklow Mountains National Park

    Falcon Watch

    Sunday 20th June 2010

10a.m. to 4p.m. Miners' Village, Upper Lake, Glendalough

The Wicklow Mountains National Park was set up to protect a range of native plants & animals including the world’s fastest creature – the Peregrine falcon. National Park staff will have telescopes trained on one of the falcon nests in order to allow people to enjoy this special time of the year for the fledging chicks.

At this stage the two chicks will be losing their downy fluff and be developing the feathers that will allow them to leave the nest. They’ll be hungry and more and more active as the time approaches for them to stretch their wings.

The Miners’ Village is at the head of the Upper Lake in Glendalough and is 30 minutes gentle walk from the Upper Lake Car Park. All are welcome to come and view these majestic creatures at any stage of the day.

Bring along binoculars if you have them. All ages welcome - booking not necessary. For more information, please phone 0404 45425.

    Bug Walk

    Saturday 26 June

11a.m. Information Office, Upper Lake, Glendalough

Take a safari through the amazing world of bugs. Bring a jar with a lid to help examine the mini-beasts. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Much loved by children and adults alike. Family friendly, although not suitable for buggies. Booking is essential. Bookings taken from Saturday 12th June only. For bookings, please phone 0404 45425.

    Summer Save our Seabirds events.

    From:
    http://www.birdwatchireland.ie/Events/SummerSaveourSeabirdsevents/tabid/1005/Default.aspx
The flagship public viewing event will take place at the Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June. BirdWatch Ireland staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer your questions and show you the birds, and Puffins are guaranteed!

There are many other seabird events taking place around the country, however, and all are well worth a visit. Full details of dates and locations are given below.

There are other events throught the summer in Dublin, Sligo, Mayo, Kerry and Wicklow. Further details are on the website.
I'm going to try to get to the Cliffs of Moher next weekend but the logistics may be against me:rolleyes:

We went to see the peregrines at Glendalough on Sunday after visiting Mothman's pond, and got there just in time, although the day was such a beautiful one, the Rangers didn't mind hanging a round a bit longer. There wasn't a huge amount of activity .. you could see the chicks in the nest, but they were sitting quite a way back in the nest, presumably sheltering from the sun, and the adult birds were flying around and perching every now and then, but not feeding the chicks. Presumably the prey was doing the same thing as they were and sheltering from the heat as well. Well worth a visit though, even though the whole area around Glendalough was absolutely heaving with people parking, or rather abandoning, their cars everywhere!

    Lads,
I am bringing a group of walkers to Iniskea South Island next Sat, Aug 14th, leaving Blacksod Pier, The Mullet peninsula, (ca. 24 km beyond Belmullet town), Mayo, at 10 am. Back around 3 or 4 pm.
I am absolutely not an expert, but if you want to come to observe seals, birds, possibly dolphins, etc, come along. The cost is Euro 40 pp and it is not a money-making venture. That's to pay the boatman. PM me.

Jan 1st short outing at Nimmo's pier at 10.30am.

These seem to happen on the first saturday of every month. I've been intending to go to one of them but have always ended up working.

Nimmo's pier is great birdwatching. You don't even need binoculars, just a slice pan of bread. You can see (usually) many rare/uncommon birds. Ring billed gull, iceland gull, glaucous gull, kumliens gulland the resident American herring gull. A revision of gull ageing and plumage variations and general gull id is essential.

    Just got this note

I thought you might like to know about the upcoming 'Burren in Bloom' Festival which runs in Co Clare from the 29th April to the 29th of May. As you know, the Burren is an area of huge botanical, geological, and archaeological significance and I'm sure that there's events in our programme that'll be of interest to many of you. We have a full downloadable programme of events and full contact details (with Facebook and Twitter links) on our website:- http://www.burreninbloom.com

Hopefully some of you would like to attend - everyone's more than welcome.

Just below venue on Museum page is
Public seminar on Irish wildlife for Biodiversity Month in Collins Barracks (Decorative Arts & History)

Confusing I agree, but it does seem to be in Collins barracks.

Yep, a great afternoon, lots of gulls seen - various ages such as kittiwakes, black headed, herring & scandinavian herring gulls, common, great black backed & lesser black backed, mediterranean, a leucistic Black-headed Gull (a bit too far for a photo :() and a ring-billed gull, my first...:)

There were also 4 Iceland Gulls out at the "outflow", way too far for a photo and my little bins.

Here is a photo of the Ring-billed Gull...

A big thanks to NTK et all..
