    New Year, so time for a new thread. Copied from last year's;

PLEASE give some info on the race/your training/how you felt/next target etc when posting your times, so we don't end up with a boring thread of tables.

    The times are:

    400m - 1 minute
    800m- 150 seconds
    1 mile - 5 mins
    3k - 10 mins
    5k - 20 mins
    5miles - 30 mins
    10k - 40 mins
    10miles - 1 hour
    Half Marathon - 90 mins
    Marathon - 3 hours.

Well the year's already almost a day old, plenty of time to have gotten in a few races. I really should have stayed in bed instead of forcing myself to suffer through just for the sake of pointless box ticking, but I guess I'll never learn. Had a cold for the last week, and I need to be recovered enough to start marathon training soon, so it'll be at least a month before I even attempt another race. (5ks don't count, right?):o

THIS new initiative from AAI may be of interest to those targeting the shorter distances : 800m/1500m/3000m open races Indoors (Athlone/Dublin) on various Jan/Feb dates.

There is almost nothing new about this. The only difference is the addition of 800m races to Round 2 of the league. Other than that, this is exactly the same as before. We already had graded guest races at both rounds of the league and we already had graded races at AAI Games. This really is little more than rebranding in the hope of boosting numbers. Disappointing that they brand this as a "new initiative" rather than coming up with actual new initiatives.

The Dublin indoor track is new at least! :pac:

TBF, branding is the biggest hurdle (no pun intended) when it comes to athletics clubs and competitions. The "running boom" has had huge benefits for mass-participation events, but club-level stuff has seen minimal increases. Getting numbers into clubs and participating in events is both hugely important and extremely difficult for AAI, and both suffer from the perception that they are for elites (or at least speedsters).

Well if they are looking to tap into that mass participation market, then using the term "High Performance" is hardly the way to go about it.

Where are you getting "High Performance" from? The AAI article uses the phrase "Indoor Endurance" for the branding, with reference to organising "high quality"' races for athletes of all levels.

In other words, the kind of initiative (new or not) that might encourage some people around here to have a go at some of the shorter distances on the round numbers table, which I'm sure was Bungy Girl's motivation for posting the link.

New initiative or not, who cares? You've been bleating on yourself for years now about people not being interested in track. Why not go with the spirit of it?

    AAI HP Indoor Endurance Initiative

    HP = High Performance

I dont see how this will get recreational runners running track.

    Hope to be proven wrong.

I didn't say they were going about the branding the right way :) Just that re-branding isn't automatically a pointless exercise

I looked this up a while ago -

in 2007, there were 120 women competing in the senior T&F championships
    in 2016, it was 171
not doubling, but still a substantial improvement

    *didn't count the men
*relays not listed for 2007, this is individual events
*in both years, there were bound to be some women who competed in multiple events, so the real number is a bit lower

    Naas parkrun.
Happy with the time but I hope to improve it over the coming weeks.

Ran the 5k in the Armagh international 5K. Not a PB, but not too far from it either, which I was happy about in the midst of high-mileage marathon training. Just back from Ballycotton 10 mile where I took a chunk of change off of my previous PB (from the same race two years ago). Glad to see a PB after a dry-spell and a solid 24 months of training (interrupted only by two months of injury).
*There was a mid-point chip mat in Ballycotton, and this is the faster of the two splits (technically a 5 mile PB for me also). The second half is net uphill, though we had the wind behind us. First half split is net downhill, though we had a strong head-wind (26:52), so including the second split as it was uphill. Not sure if I'm comfortable with keeping the split. Might run a 5 miler later in the year.

Hoping to have another rattle at all of the targets this year, though, as always, it's unlikely that I will target the shorter stuff with specific training (400/800). If the Marathon goes to plan in a few weeks, I may give the graded meets a decent pop this year, instead of the usual lip-service.

MSB 5k. Flat, but twisty course. I ran pretty well, but it was blowy, and 19.31 felt like a poor return. General consensus:
    a slow day for racing.
Liverpool Half. Good weather, wind came into play with a vengeance over final 4 miles: relentless headwind along the promenade to Albert Dock. Paced it really well and had the strength to maintain the pace for a 77 second pb that was 6 years in the making.

5k ran at Malahide parkrun a few weeks ago. Half-marathon in Limerick on Sunday. Really enjoyed the half and was great to get back to some decent longer distance stuff after a year written off through injury, and was more than happy to take almost a minute off my PB.

Will hopefully be able to add a few more distances to the table over the course of the year.

Arghhh. 2:30.53 today in the national masters.

Could I have squeezed an extra second? Probably, I felt strong and nearly comfortable on the first lap. All a new learning curve, first 800m since 1991. Jaysus when did I get so ancient?!

Double PBs in the 800/5000m at Dublin Graded 6 last night gets me on the board for the shorter stuff. Hope to do the same at Graded 8 with 400/3000m. Doubtful I'll break 60 (by far the hardest on the list IMO), but should go under 10 in the 3000m. Not sure if I'll get to do a mile, maybe the Irish Runner paced miles will give me a chance, have run a couple of 1500m at sub-5 pace. Rotterdam, Ballycotton, K Club and the Irish Runner are the others. The National Half (RnR ) will (should!) get me the missing longer one, and will hopefully have a hugely improved time in DCM

My first time posting on one of these threads. I'd been aiming for sub-20 for a long while. My PB had been 20:06 since 2015, but hadn't run many 5k's in the interim. I'd been disappointed by a 20 min flat time 3 weeks earlier but surprised myself with a 19:36 time in Kilcock. Sometimes its good to go out at a crazy pace.

The Dublin Gradeds have added a Mile to the final meet in Tallaght next Wednesday.

Now to figure out which two to double up on out of 400m, 3000m, or the mile. Or try the triple...

Ah, you just think that because the the combined length is 50 times your race distance. It's only about 12% of mine :)

    Definitely go with all three!:D

I doubled up a 400/mile before and ran all 4 splits of the mile faster than the 400, and the mile slower than my 5k avg mile pace at the time. Would not recommend. :pac:
