    I gave question 3b a shot alright in an attempt to just pick up whatever marks possible, think i made a total mess of 1a as my mind went blank with the chr$(13). Was happy enough with 1b and 2b but hard to know how much stuff i messed up in it

    How ye get on in Maths? Always hard to tell with maths whether you did good or bad but I hopefully got the 21% needed to pass. Attempted the 5 questions but stumbled pretty badly on the statistics one.

    I was looking at the timetable, it appears we have the first week of March off, then off 2 weeks at the start of April, then back 3 weeks before summer exams. Gonna be a fairly fast and furious semester i'd say.

    Are there classes during ragweek? I thought we had midterm or something during the start of march as the timetable has no classes listed, but it turns out its clear the same week rag week is on.

    Not too bad so far. Java is the stinger :D. It's a struggle to finish labsheets now in class as they are fairly heavy. Just have to get used to the language I guess.

    I did fairly good in JB last semester (90%) and finding lab 4 a struggle so far so more practice needed! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,595 ✭✭✭✭siblers

    Seems ok so far, was expecting semester 2 to be a lot more intense, but so far seems manageble, Digital Imaging seems so far that it wont be as demanding as vis comms, Op systems and Computer Architecture seems grand as well, Java is the big one. CA next week will be fairly tough trying to remember all the code.

    seemed to become clearer half way through lab3 so hopefully with practice it,ll be easier . it,s a huge module so hopefully workload in others won,t be too bad

    Well done ;)

    Just a quick one. Are your grades added up from both semesters and averages taken? Are they taken year to year or is every semester independent?

    I was in University before and this was done.

    Yeah according to the results they average the two semesters every year. I have one average each for year 1, 2, etc.
    Interestingly under award it only lists my average for this year (so far). Is it only the GPA from the last year that is used for the award or is it all 3?

    Couldn't tell you. I wasn't even told that semesters are added together and an average taken.

    In UL each semester was added through years 1-4 and an average taken. Was a b1tch if you had a tough semester as it would drive down your overall average. I did bad in the second semester (year 1) and it was always a struggle from then to raise it to almost impossible especially if you're chasing a 2.1 first class honors degree.

    Interesting:

    Proposal to establish the Munster Technological University

    Might not happen for a few years although I could see the government/HEA using this as a way to cut costs and amalgamate courses. Makes sense in a way I suppose. I wonder would each campus become specialised e.g. Tralee for Tech, Cork for Business, Limerick for Science?

    Thankfully It will just be based on your 3rd year results, if you do 4th year you will be judged on your 4th year results. Would put students under loads of pressure if was your GPA from years 1-3/4

    Antirip or JFlah, just wondering have either of ye done exercise 2 in lab sheet 4? It's the one about the PAYE. I have it working but I didn't use the constant thingy as I wasn't sure how to do it. Here's my code for it, just wondering how would I use the constant.
    //exercise2.java

    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;

    public class exercise2 {
    public static void main(String args[])
    {
    String incomeAsString, pensionAsString, cutoffAsString, taxAsString;
    float income, pension, cutoff, tax, paye;
    incomeAsString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter your income:");
    pensionAsString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter your pension payment:");
    cutoffAsString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter your cutoff:");
    taxAsString = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter your tax credits:");

    income = Float.parseFloat(incomeAsString);
    pension = Float.parseFloat(pensionAsString);
    cutoff = Float.parseFloat(cutoffAsString);
    tax = Float.parseFloat(taxAsString);

    if (income > cutoff)
    {

    paye = cutoff/5 + (income-cutoff-pension)/100*42 - tax;

    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The PAYE Due by the employee is" + paye, "PAYE Calculator",JOptionPane.PLAIN_MESSAGE);
    }
    else
    {
    paye = (income - pension)/5 - tax;
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The PAYE Due by the employee is" + paye, "PAYE Calculator",JOptionPane.PLAIN_MESSAGE);
    }
    System.exit(0);
    }
    }

    the way I coded mine is to set a constant do

    final float HIGHER_RATE = 42f;

    final float LOWER_RATE = 20f;

    the variable name must be all upper case and if double barrelled names separate names with underscore

    They must have learned from us so because you could count the number of people on one hand who went to that on a monday morning. Lectures in the morning do not work for most people I would say, at least if it's a practical you have to engage the brain and that stops you from falling asleep.

    Not a whole lot going on really, 2nd semester is alright so far. Personally I'm fairly worried about Operating Systems, how I'm gonna memorize it for the exams I do not know. Was struggling a bit with CSS but it is finally starting to come together. Java not too bad either, up to date with all the lab sheets so happy enough with that. Digital Imaging project is grand r as well, although I reckon I'll struggle to include all the features we were doing in class. Computer Architecture is a piece of piece so far.

    Anyone else finding it quite hard doing work outside of class? I never miss classes and when on campus I do the work, but once I get home I don't do a tap. Come 4:00pm I am shattered, no energy at all compared to 1st semester.

    Finding it very hard to get motivated this semester but struggling along ok, Digital Imaging seeming pretty poorly designed module at the moment getting 0 feedback or input, rest is ok CSS is good but forget loads of tags since 1st semester Java is ok but next CA should be interesting good few beginning to struggle badly recently.

    Yeah Java seems to be make or break for most students this semester,. Also finding attendances in classes are way down compared to first semester, loads of fellas only sticking around for half a lecture and then going away early which I personally find a bit mad. Especially for java and css. Fair aul step up from Semsester one in fairness.

    Yeah OOP1 is a big step up from Intro to programming. The dropout rates are atrocious after Christmas and again after the summer. If there's 50 in your class now you'll be looking at <20 next year and less again for third year.

    Snowed under with project work at the moment, any second years here? How are your projects going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭JFlah

    Yeah the biggest thing I,ve noticed is attendance or lack of it, seems to be a vicious circle the more u miss the further behind you are and the more in the **** you are so you attend even less. I,m enjoying oop1 more than JBasic seems to make a little more sense to me but a serious struggle if you fall behind i,d imagine

    This is a long shot...:D

    Anyone want to take part in a usability test next tuesday? Anytime between nine to eleven. It should only take ten minutes. We're just trying out some software we developed.

    It's really more about performing the test than anything. It's for the Human Computer Interaction module we're currently doing.

    Tea/Coffee & scones/donuts will be provided!

    All I can say is thank god for the first CA being so easy, 10%in the bag and we have another CA after rag week worth 25%. If I could get 17/18% in that I'd be delighted. I really don't want to be another statistic who dropped out because of Java, just finding that the labsheets are being piled on a bit too quickly, realistaclly could do with another 3 hour lab class a week.

    You should probably send out an email for your project to the computing students, seems pretty interesting. I'd go but wont be availble at that time.

    Good idea but I was looking at the timetables and most computing students seem to have class then, I'll chance it anyway.
