Pretty much any IP that is big at the moment will sell more than FFVII. People that want FFVII are a vocal minority and one that is shrinking everyday. You can see it by how many people are now saying FFX is their favourite and in a recent Famitsu poll FFX came out on top. For the cost it would take to remake the game and the smaller sales Square would see from it means that Square are better off using the money on new entries or rereleasing FFX which in japan at least has the bigger market and is a far less expensive re-release. So don't hold your breathe for a remake.

It would do gangbusters in America alone. Your bolded point leaves me a bit staggered to be honest. Hasn't Square-Enix's president been asked two years running "Please remake FFVII!" at their annual fan event?

I kinda agree with Retro. Years ago I would say FF7 is everyones favourite game, even though FF9 is my favourite game.

But ever since I've entered into discussions online I find more people like FF4,FF6,FF9 and FFX. Hell FFX is getting a HD upgrade as it is.

He probably has. However there's nothing more rabbidly vocal than the FFVII fanbase and the Square Enix president isn't going to listen to vocal fans, he's going to approve projects that will make money. It's a business, not about pleasing fans.

There's lots of factors involved. Remaking FFVII would mean building all assets from scrath, be it 3D models and textures or new HD 2D backgrounds. It would cost the same to make as a brand new game except it will have a smaller audience. There's also the fact that the battle engine and mechanics would probably need a new overhaul. In a world where stuff like Xenoblade, Persona 4, Dragon Quest IX, or even going back further to Grandia et al. FFVII is a very archaic game in comparison. Critics will savage the game more than likely leading to a further drop off in sales.

People get older, most move away from games and the majority of gamers get younger. Don't believe the reports of research showing the average age of a gamer is 28, it's taken from polls that exclude anyone under the age of 20. The majority of gamers has and always will be teens and most teens probably don't remember FFVII and FFX was their first introduction to the series and so was their favourite. It's not a question of the quality of the game more the one that left the biggest impression and for most people it was their first time that left the biggest impression (ooh matron!). It's the only reason to explain shite like Legend of Dragoon having such a vocal fanbase.

It makes more sense from a business perspective to remake the newer 3D games. Less overheads and bigger audience. I think the last time we had a chance of a FFVII remake would have been a DS or PSP one.

The fans might want FFVII but there's not as many as you would think anymore. Also think back to that poochie episode of the Simpson and the quote 'You kids don't know what you want! That's why you're still kids, cos your stupid!'. That's pretty much Square Enix right now and tbh they wouldn't be in business if they made decisions based on fan reaction rather than how financially feasible it is.

It's basically the exact same thing that Square say everytime. Basically saying get stuffed without hurting anyone's feelings.

I should think that their top priority at the moment is milking the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation for all it's worth before moving on to anything else.
I think a FFVII remake would just take too much in the way of time and resources to make and Kitase has said he'd be tempted to make changes as well.

Kitase has said he'd be tempted to make changes as well.

He probably should and help modernise it, although if it's to add more connections to crap like Advent Children then he can **** off. Adding changes didn't exactly hinder the excellent DS FFIV remake.

Well, Mikami reckoned the excellent GC remake of Resident Evil was 70% different from the original and that turned out brilliantly.
FFIV DS... That takes me back. Used to grind on it while I was meant to be working. One of my first DS games.

Making "FFVII HD" is a lose-lose for SE.

SE make an unsuccessful FF7 remake:

Hardcore, older FF fans holing out for the big moment finally abandon/boycott SE and stop playing there games.

SE look as though they are now incapable of producing a game equalling FFVII's quality and captivation.

a light is cast on the production teams behind FFVII (a lot of whom no longer work for SE) and the fact that the FFVII remake pales in comparison to the original means hoards of people possibly buying and trying the last story and Pandora tower etc instead of new SE games.

SE make a successful FF7 Remake:

SE will be encouraged to make more remakes stunting development of original titles (VIII and XI will be demanded almost instantly you feel).

All of the positive aspects of the title except for the final build graphic quality will be more or less attributed to the original title designers (again, few of whom still work at SE)

In comparison to FFXII & XIII, Fans may accuse SE of no longer having the capability of conceiving or producing strong role-play storytelling which is why the FF7 remake is their best title in a decade or more. (i.e. that it was made by better artists/musicians/storytellers)

    lose lose.

A remake is unlikely to do well for the simple reason that it will at best serve as a trip down memory lane for some gamers. It just won't affect the modern generation the same way that a new Call of Duty will. Did FFXIII generate any excitement in the gaming community in general? The name has lost too much of it's allure to the aforementioned COD and similar.
For the record, I like Square Enix. I have enjoyed several of their games and I was quite impressed at how readily they'll adapt their flagship series instead of just shoving out the same thing again and again that you see with several other titles.

All they need to do is release a cleaner looking port on the Vita with widescreen support and a re-orchestrated soundtrack (with the option to change back). I don't see what's so hard about that. It worked fine with FFIV on PSP.

Hell, they could stick Crisis Core on there and call it 'FFVII: Complete' or something.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,829 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

FFVII doesn't have a tile based 16-bit RPG engine like FF4. All the backgrounds will have to be re-rendered in high definition and widescreen with new matte paintings. Of course that's if they go the 2D background route. If they go 3D then all the backgrounds will have to be made from scratch as well character models and animation.

Both ways mean you're basically spending the same money on a remake as you would on a brand new game. A remake will have a smaller audience so it makes sense to spend the money in a wiser fashion.

It's not the same as handing the game off to a korean mobile phone developer and telling them to not change anything and preform what amounts to an advanced ROM hack.

Anyway as has been mentioned it's a catch 22 situation but not for the reasons mentioned, in my opinion. Release the game with the game mechanics still intact and you've got a game that will appeal to a small fanbase while it looks totally archaic next to more advanced RPGs and gets ripped apart by reviewers. Change the game story wise and the battle system and you end up with a product that will split the fanbase between the muppets that won't accept change and the ones that will while still not appealing outside this small niche.

There's just no market for it. Makes more sense to just re-release it as a retro release.

A week since an update?! I have failed you all!!!!

Thankfully I have news since we tried more last two days :)

So last we looked, she was running around after landing the snowboard and had not yet realised she was supposed to be looking for landmarks. She did get to the point where you place the marker and the environment rotates but she assumed this was a lost cause and left. After a further 10 mins here, she collapsed and woke up at Holzoff's cabin.

After getting an idea whats coming up ahead and rearranging her equipment she heads up the cliff without any incidents and the puzzles in the cliff provide very little in the way of difficulty. Her main area of contention is trying to navigate the 2D maps which aren't always as intuitive as I remember. The icicles provide no barrier to her progress but as she enters the cave with Schizo (the two headed jerk) and the music changed she knew she was in for a boss.

Very quickly she cased fire2 on both heads and saw straight away that it healed one and damaged the other and realised her magic wasn't going to do much good here so concentrated with physical attacks and non elemental summons. She did mistakenly summon Ifrit but she knew before he hit that it was a mistake so her knowledge of elemental forces is getting a lot better. She also started using Cloud's Meteorain limit instead of his Finishing Touch after realising it was doing about 3 times the damage. Her max HP for most around here is about 2,500 so even when Schizo casts Quake twice in a row, she was able to stay in the game. She did spend more time trying to keep her party alive in this fight which, in my mind, is showing a more conservative approach to the battles. She also was telling me about this amazing spell she now has called Esuna which is the bee's knees apparently :p. But, as expected, she finally defeated him and managed to progress past him, very proud of herself and heading towards the Northern Crater.

At this point its worth noting that after she hit the Northern Crater, we were speaking aloud about the story as she was playing. Mainly because she was getting hit by the walls of wind and green energy a lot. We talked about the uselessness of going after Sephiroth because Cloud is just going to do what he's told anyway. We debated about whether or not Cloud is a clone of Sephiroth or in fact the original Sephiroth. And as we got further and to the point where she had to fight Jenova again, (you're gonna love this Retr0) she said "You know what, its probably all Jenova's doing" and when I asked why she replied with "Well think about it, I end up fighting Jenova alot more than I end up fighting Sephiroth, Jenova is Sephiroth's mom, he's probably just a mommy's boy", possibly the greatest summation of FF7's complex plot while also insulting one of the most popular video game characters ever. I've been trying to refrain from answering any questions that the game itself will answer but right here was the point when I started to realise that she might not need me to go over the story with her as she finished the game.

But just when I resigned myself to her all knowing ways we reached the point where we start to learn about what REALLY happened in Nibelheim. As we watched Cloud look around as Sephiroth, the shinra troops and Zack walk in, she reacted as I think everyone reacts the first time you see this scene. "Who the hell is this?!" followed epically by "Is that evil Cloud?". Completely baffled by this, she reads on as she hears more about what Sephiroth is saying. Initially taking Cloud's side that Sephiroth is blatantly talking out of his arse, and trying to wind him up but as Tifa starts acting suspiciously, Emma's rock solid confidence begins to erode. Now a new wave of questions begin, "Is Tifa a clone? Is Sephiroth controlling Tifa? Is she just being a lovestruck idiot?" Rather surprisingly, in the wave of questions she produces at every one of these plot twists, she almost always manages to guess the right answer, her only problem being she creates a theory and almost immediately creates a newer one.

Anyway, as Cloud's brain is melting into a puddle of puke, we see Sephiroth arrive in the guise of Tifa to convince RedXIII (who we gave the black materia to, she walked straight up to Yuffie as she knew I was watching and when she was prompted with "Give Yuffie the Black Materia" she responded with "Yeah right bitch" before picking lovable Red.) to go to Cloud. The scene's between Professor Hojo and Rufus then, in particular talking about Cloud seem to cement some facts in her mind, namely that Cloud IS a clone of Sephiroth and the fact he has no number on his hand is purely down to Hojo's belief that he was a failure. We have a slight "aww poor Cloud" moment before throwing profanity after profanity into the air as "poor Cloud" hands the black materia over to Sephiroth.

We all know what happens next, as the Northern Crater collapses and the WEAPONs emerge, we can see Avalanche minus Cloud on the airship. I love this FMV sequence, just because they WEAPON's look pretty awesome. As Ultima WEAPON gets ready to fly past the airship, herself is slightly confused as to whether or not this guy is a robot or what, but to me this is far less interesting as the observation she makes AFTER he blasts off into the distance and we see the Avalanche crew jiggled about. Thats right, we all know I'm talking about Tifa's knockers. "Jesus Tifa has some boobs" was the statement, and she now is far more aware of the size of them in everything from battle screens to the manual. Lets hope she never googles Tifa.

Waking in Junon, she finds out about Meteor being summoned ("fuck") and the WEAPONs ("Thats what Gast was talking about!") and she then discovers that Rufus is planning to execute them. With this much story to digest she has decided to take a break for the night as her head is literally overflowing with new storyline and plot twists all over the place.

Hopefully will have more for you guys soon!

The plot isn't that complex though, they clearly say it's Sephiroth doing.

I'd be interested in seeing what she thinks by the end of it. I thought that way myself but mindkiller makes a pretty convincing case.

She's doing well, thought the two headed dragon would give her more trouble but she's got the conservative healing tactics down now, it's really all you need for the rest of the game.

Quick! Somebody pick up on this fair point and blow it out of all proportion!

I personally can't wait for the second part of Cid's story to see what she thinks of him once the exploding tank episode happens.

wasn't junon were all those toy soldiers were hidden? I had an awful time trying to work out what they were for only to find they did nothing. Music from this area was great.

Anyway, on remakes.....theres always the origonal game if people think its that great, played as REDXIV's partner is doing and enjoying it!!

A remake like many have said will be shockingly expensive and at the end of the day not the same aminal we all played and loved many years ago.

Loving the updates, I'm almost inspired to route out the game and play it again!

Ok so last we left, Tifa and Barret were being marched to their deaths and we rejoin them as Scarlet shoves Tifa into the gas chamber to be executed. As Tifa is strapped in and the key falls from one of the guards, she gets excited as she knows the key means something but she can't tell what yet. Just then, Weapon attacks and as the FMV plays showing Weapon's approach, she notes "This must have been amazing back in 1997", her understanding for my nostalgic love for the game is obviously starting to grow :)

So as we watch Weapon attack and Barret has resigned himself to following Cait Sith (incidentally, this is the first time she has used Cait Sith and actually liked his rather simple Limit Break, still hates him as a character though) we are left with Tifa to try and wriggle her way to to get free. As the buttons appear on screen to highlight the buttons that control each body part, she begins a button bashing spree, worthy of any street fighter competition. After a few frenzied seconds of this and just seeing Tifa squirm basically she stops and realises that she needs to take her time with this. Once the calm hits she manages this little puzzle quite easily (thanks to the tips that also appear on screen) and manages to shut off the gas. As Weapon then blows a chunk out of the building she climbs down and heads out onto the sister ray. While this is happening, she watches as Barret and Cait Sith run into Yuffie and her dismay as she's stuck with the two characters she hates the most is clearly evident. As she gets to the airship and Barret pulls off his heroic pose, We are whisked back to Tifa who has been cornered by Scarlet on the Sister Ray. After the slapping match (which has slammed for being stupidly girly) the subsequent rescue on the highwind, we are off for the next adventure!

As we got on the airship, the usual excitement took place, as we explored our new base of operations. Although, every so often she'd run into Yuffie getting sick and a new tirade of abuse would appear ("Who even wants you here?! get off if your sick!"). Eventually after talking to everyone bar the pilot about 3 times, she found the pilot who let them set off towards the "Southern Isle". This was completely overshadowed by the ability to fly around with funky music playing which we did for approx 10 mins before going back to finding the island we were supposed to. After a brief hiccup while trying to land (can't land on forest, only on grass, now she knows) we got to Mideel. She actually said as she went in, "I'm not supposed to be here am I", just as Tifa overheard about Cloud being in the hospital. As she went in she spotted Cloud almost immediately behind the nurse but her suspicious mind immediately thought that this was an ambush and appeared actually disappointed when it didn't happen. Seeing Tifa stick with Cloud was very much an "Awwww" moment and then as the rest of the team decide to elect a leader, she was convinced Barret would get it and was taken aback when Cid got the vote of confidence. She believes this is the section where I fell for Cid's lovable roguish charm. Who knows, she could be right?

By this stage we've seen how Shinra are after the "Huge" materia, and are aiming towards Corel and Fort Condor. Not remembering where Fort Condor was, we spent an entertaining few minutes flying through the world until she saw the "Eagle statue" and parked up beside it. I won't bore you with the details of her tower defence game but suffice to say that her tactics could use some work. It ended up with Cid going out to save the day and to her utter dismay, she watched as the condor died. Since the date night incident in the Gold Saucer, she isn't sure what events are scripted to happen and which she has control over so I had to reassure her that this would always happen and restarting her game would not solve anything. Content in this, she proceeded towards Corel to complete the mission involving the train. This I was looking forward to as I remember the TV advert for FF7 had the train crashing FMV sequence and I hadn't seen it actually happen in the game and I will admit, I was confident I was about to see it. As she started the second train, she seemed to take a little while to get used to the alternating levers, and when she saw the 10 min countdown, she got a bit peeved at the idea of doing it for a full 10 mins. Thankfully after a few seconds she reached the other train and hopped over to begin the series of fights on the train.

The first two fights presented no difficulty, taking off 500-700HP per hit, she quickly dispatched the first two. She did have a slight hiccup with the iron giant as she had equipped RedXIII with a reflect ring and every time she cured all, she was curing the iron giant also but she took him out with a series of limit breaks with 4 minutes to spare for the final fight. Here she started to worry and after two rounds of physical attacks, cast Bolt3 twice to a devastating 6000 damage a piece, taking him out in less than 2 minutes. The last fight with the soldier was started and ended with Barret's Hammerblow limit break and to my surprise she actually managed to stop the train. Little bit disappointed but you can't have everything. When the kid then handed her the "Ultima" materia, her eyes lit up, "Ultima is better than huge right?!" and was very unimpressed with the fact you need to level up Ultima before you can use it.

After this we zoomed back towards Mideel to check on Tifa and the vegetable, just as Ultimate Weapon decided to make an appearance. Getting far too cocky, she hadn't saved in a while (just after getting Ultima) when she ran straight into him and within minutes, she had been wiped out. Shooting up from her relaxed position on the sofa, we were in vendetta mode as we spent about 10 mins preparing her battle array and sure enough, when prepared, there is very little she can't take on. Ultimate Weapon flew off leaving her very confused but not nearly as confused as she was about to get with the Zack/Cloud episode.

So Cloud and Tifa fell through the lifestream and we're at the part where most of the twists and tangles in the plot become uncovered. Before we went in, Zack was still "Evil Cloud", Cloud was a creation of Hojo, a failed Sephiroth clone, and Tifa was a messed up goodie two shoes who loved him enough to cover up the truth. As more and more of the plot became clear she began to get closer to the truth but not actually getting it until Cloud took his actual mask off. Right up until that point, she still was convinced that Cloud was in some way, a version of Zack, which is true in a way. She was also disappointed in hindsight with Aeris and Tifa's actions in Gongaga with Zack's parents. Although after some thought, she is slightly more forgiving towards Tifa as its almost stated that Tifa was completely unaware of Cloud's presence there 5 years ago. She was slightly more confused when Cloud manages to survive being impaled on the Masamune and this sparked another "is he human or what" thing but we have left that as pure adrenaline. She's also asking what happened to Zack and because its slightly more tricky to find that in the game, I'm not sure what to tell her. She does seem interested in as much of the storyline as Square can feed her so maybe Crisis Core will be another game for her to try.

So thats pretty much this week, we have just brought Cloud back on board the Highwind who has succinctly described everything in the lifestream so she's got a better understanding. She also, as she was turning it off, noted she has clocked up 40 hours of gameplay so far. Very happy with her progress and she seems to be back to the engrossed in the game state (we played for the guts of 4 hours yesterday).

Hopefully we'll have another update soon!

Nobody needs to play Crisis Core. It adds nothing to the story and she'll get everything she needs from revisiting Nibelheim.

Quite possible she'll be bored of the FF7 universe before she finishes the game, she has the guts of another 20 hours I'd say before she beats the game, and thats ignoring things like chocobo breeding so by that stage she could be all for packing it in and, hopefully, trying a new game with a better story. But if she's still in love with FF7 world, i'll have to let her try it, better Crisis Core than Dirge of Cerebus :D

Was actually just coming in to update this thread!!!

    No more tears!!!!

So we left last time after we had reunited Cloud with the party and he had explained the back story, whats what and why he was crazy etc. When we left we knew we had to go to Junon and thats where we headed again. After getting to Junon and entering a fight (Argh!! stupid Cait Sith has our materia!) we stop and reorganise who has what. Her standard party has seemingly always consisted of her favourite comrades, Barret and Tifa. As such, both of these have also unlocked their 3rd level limit breaks but she has not yet realised or perhaps forgotten about setting the limit level to 3 to access these. I'm sure this is particularly more devastating for Tifa but I've decided to keep quiet. These kind of things I have explained before and she understood so its her lack of attention to detail that has left her without these. She has also in the last while unlocked a ton of more advanced magic and barely a fight goes by without her receiving a new ability. As expected, some of them have gone unnoticed, in particular, the ones that don't have an immediate and obvious award i.e. HP plus but others have been thoroughly examined. None as much as the magic ability of "Death" which has yet to be successfully applied to an enemy.

Anyways, in Junon and she is trying to find the underwater reactor. Having spent a good bit of time up above, buying all the stuff she wanted last time and couldn't afford, she eventually stumbles upon the door leading towards the underwater reactor. Trying to remember this part of the game before she does it reveals very little to me bar one thing. Carry ****ing Armor. That bastard boss of a crane machine that left me in tears as a 12yr old after days of unsuccessful attempts. For those who weren't as anal as me about remembering names you may remember this instead:
    FFVII_Arm_Grab.png
This prick can pick up TWO of your characters while fighting and used to always kill me by doing this. When Mrs. RedXIV finally got here, she fought gallantly but in the end she suffered the same fate as I did for so long. With two of her characters picked up, she Cast Ice3 on all but she ended up hitting her allies and wiped them out before getting picked up as the survivor and getting killed. The second attempt was very similar. On the third attempt, the correct strategy dawned on her, approximately 6 days before I'd have the same realisation, all those years ago, she focused on the arms and on the third attempt, she wiped the floor with Carry Armour. As usual my ego took a bit of a battering after her not-so-humble "How long did he take you to beat?" "Was he hard for you on your first time?" and "Does this make me a better gamer than you?".

To my surprise, after the boss fight when Reno launches into the sub, the hurry music doesn't incite her to race after him and she calmly explores and finds all the items, including the Leviathan Scales, an object I would miss regularly on my attempts. Once in the Sub, she graciously allowed the sub staff to surrender before launching into the sub mini game. As noted previously, she does not like the mini games and this was no exception. After a few mins of driving into one of the walls, she proceeded to drive into mine after mine. As expected with such a strategy, it didn't take long for her to end up with the "Misson Failed" screen.

From here she went towards Rocket Town with the intentions of getting the last Huge materia. Heading towards the rocket itself in Rocket town, as she's constantly getting ambushed, she gets to the point where Cid insists on joining the party. At this stage, she no longer has the disgust she initially had for Cid, having enjoyed the variety when Cid was leader. And then as she flew through the fights (The Rude fight was literally a 2 min walkover) she watched as they got ready to launch into space. Expecting the same as last time, when the rocket actually launched she was bit taken aback. Was a nice moment though as you watch Cid finally realise his dreams. As an aside, the launch FMV always reminds me of the trailer for FF7 so I put it on for her to look at, something which I remember downloading over 40 mins back in the dial-up era. She lost interest fairly rapidly.

When brought up to the holding area for the huge materia I watched her put in her first attempt only to be told it was incorrect. I wasn't present for the next part but she admitted afterwards she googled the code. Thats fair enough in my books, I'm 90% sure I had been told the code as well. After she returned to earth, she headed towards Cosmo Canyon, and it was here I discovered that she may have googled more than just the code. Distressed she started to ask where was the rest of it and understanding dawned on me. She had 3 of the 4 pieces of huge materia and the lack of the 4th meant she couldn't get the last bahamut summon. She told me at this point she strongly considered starting again to get it but I told her there would be more powerful ones to see throughout the game so she is holding out for them.

After Bugenhagen decides to join them and they head back towards the forbidden City, the stumble onto the writing that says they need the "key". At the moment of writing this, this is where we stand. Our biggest problem is that having never lost the sub mission, I'm used to the sub just being parked at Junon when I finish that mission but on her game I can't find it. She's currently investigating Junon itself, hoping to find answers in the underwater reactor. I am somewhat impressed that the clue "where not even the sun can reach" lead her straight to underwater. She did follow this up with "or a very deep forest" but the fact that she had the right answer from the start was encouraging. She has also at this stage managed to level up Ultima and every fight she's in I keep hearing the sound effects for the spell hitting. Overkill will be a popular feature if she goes for FFX by the sounds of it :)

And as of JUST now she's found the sub :) ...........hope she has saved before she runs into Emerald weapon :)

Will update ye more regularly from now on, since we're all on hols from next week and she's sure to take advantage of the free time to finish the game once and for all.

    Till next time!

Am I the only one who remembers Carry Armour as being called Dock Loader?

I really, really hated Carry Armour the first time through. Took great pleasure in wiping the floor with it on subsequent playthroughs

Don't forget that you can dig up Bahamut Zero in Bone Village if you missed it. That's what I did on my first playthrough, best surprise ever!

Isn't it a really low chance though? And considering she was willing to restart the game to get it then it looks like Red is in for watching a lot of digging.

It's about 4%. Here's a link that shows where to dig if she missed it:
    http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197341-final-fantasy-vii/faqs/57001
It's probably not worth getting as damage dealt is capped at 9,999 per hit and physical attacks should be hitting for most of that. And there's 2x cut, quadra magic, etc...

Right guys, we got no time on hols to play this and we've still be trying to get back to real life so its only just now that we managed to get some gaming in last night.

We were slightly behind as she hadn't saved after getting the sub/ancients key the last time but after a short spell she had caught up to her previous position in the game. I don't know if she knows about Emerald Weapon or not but she's avoiding him like the plague under water, I'm wondering if she ran into him previously when I wasn't looking. Either way she's feeling more confident about where to go and what to do once she found the key of the ancients. Bringing the key to Bugenhagen in the city of the ancients she see's the message that Aeris has managed to cast Holy and how Sephiroth is blocking the effect.

Leaving the city of the ancients, she hasn't yet gotten her next "instructions" for want of a better term and its clear to see that there are some parts of these games that wouldn't appeal to her. She likes having completed one mission and having it end with "and now go do this". Once she got to where she had left the Highwind, we see Diamond Weapon surface. And all her nagging of what to do next gets changed to "Crap, I have to fight another WEAPON?!".

Unsure of exactly how to proceed but knowing Diamond Weapon is heading for Midgar, she heads straight there and for the first time, see's the guy outside who talks about losing his keycard. This is not received well as her initial thought is she has to go back to bone village to find this keycard to proceed and she never fully understood/mastered the whole digging for treasure thing. Feeling a tad bad and knowing its been a while since she's played, I let her know this isn't necessary. She instead readies her team and saves (she's learning!) and runs into him as he hits land.

The battle against Diamond weapon was pretty bad. Completely forgetting her previous "Build defence THEN offence" tactics, she launches a string of Summon and Magic3 spells to try and take him out as quickly as possible. Her team all have between 2500HP and 3000HP and while Diamond Weapon's standard attacks only take between 750 and 1200 damage a piece, her lack of healing and defence building meant that after Diamond does his countdown, she was reduced to all three of her characters under 300HP and instead of healing straight away, tried to throw in another attack. This did not end well and her first game over since she came back was given to her.

The second time she started the fight was far more like her old style, with Regen and Barrier ("That barrier materia is really good isn't it?!") cast she was in a far better position to take out Diamond Weapon and managed it in very little time. Was a little surprised that she had managed to level up Barrier without using it and fully understanding its use but she has embraced it now, Haste is really the only other standard that I would have used in my battles that she doesn't use yet. Having beaten Diamond Weapon she also came across for the first time, the concept of materia being "born". Explaining this to her and how she got extra materia, she was happy enough but I don't know if the implications have really sank in just yet. I'd like to look through her materia to see if she has mastered anything else (in particular an All materia) but she literally finished the battle with Diamond weapon, leapt into the highwind and managed to drive straight into Ultimate Weapon. WITHOUT SAVING!?!?

All I heard (while making grub across the room) was "I just flew into this thing and its fighting me".....so its obvious that she wasn't expecting this and when Ultimate Weapon makes his appearance on the battle screen, this is when she realises that she hasn't saved. Pointing out that she could beat this guy (her guys aren't at 100% but they are all alive with decent levels of MP) she throws the same Summon and Magic combo she threw at Diamond with a couple of Limits for good measure. She is still using Finishing Touch instead of Meteorain which I can't understand but she did get a bit of a laugh from Cid lighting his Dynamite Limit with his cigarette and felt the need to point it out to me again :)

After Ultimate Weapon made some fairly strong attacks, wiping out everyone bar Cloud, she conceded defeat until Ultimate Weapon just floated off. Still unsure but at the EXP and AP screens, she lands the highwind and saves her game. Took a fright but she got there! From the FMV after beating Diamond Weapon she knows she has to head North and while on the way, we see the conversation take place noting the importance of stopping Hojo first. She's starting to get divided on the whole Cait Sith/Reeve character now. One the one hand she still hates him as a team mate but on the other she likes Reeve and is impressed by his actions to backstab Shinra. Yuffie on the other hand is still a waste of space. Trying to get back into Midgar she does the same thing as she did with Diamond Weapon, trying to walk in and only by pure chance or possibly poor driving does she go over the city to trigger the parachute scene.

After getting into Midgar, she is now in the sewers. She's making slow but steady progress through these and just gotten into the tunnel where you eventually fight Reno and the gang when she decided to call it a night. We're getting close now and her interest in the game is getting fired up again. Hopefully we will have another update soon (busy tonight and tomorrow night so will probably be Friday/Saturday)

    We will finish this!!!

Also, just for giggles, I sent this to a mate when she started, she finally got it last night:

Ok so, After the last time she took a break, she was literally two screens away from fighting Reno and his gang in the optional battle under Midgar. Having met them and unsure whether or not she should finish it once and for all, she decides to play it safe and annihilate any remaining enemies.

At the start of the battle it became clear that she was at a high enough level to sail happily through this fight, the Turks attacks weren't overly powerful and her recent obsession with Barrier materia ensured that the damage wasn't going to impact greatly on her battle. Having sacrificed using her best weapons for the ones with the most materia slots, her Magic menu has pretty much the same for most of her characters, Bolt, Fire and Cure, all linked to All materia and her main focus of attack is hitting with elemental3 magic towards all opponents. With a constant barrage of these attacks taking about 3K each time, with the occasional summon/Ultima, it doesn't take her long to dispatch the trio and she moves on.

This however took her slightly longer than expected. As mentioned before, there are certain things that seasoned gamers seem to take in their stride that other gamers may not. In this case, when speaking to the characters spread out among the tunnels, she doesn't fully grasp the implication of them saying "Not this way" and running in certain direction. As a result, she spent a good half an hour running through the tunnels with a certain amount of frustration as she couldn't find the correct path to take. Finally, after searching almost all the possible paths (and finding W-Item, cha-ching!), she got onto the streets of Midgar, straight into the hands of Proud Clod.

This was a very difficult fight for her and mainly due to her still getting her feet with all the status spells. Proud Clod is able to inflict Reflect status on a character and doing this while herself was in the middle of buffing her characters, resulted in Proud Clod getting Regen and MBarrier cast on it, making the fight all the more difficult. She is also starting to burn through alot of her more prestigious inventory, using approx 6 turbo ethers throughout the duration of the battle. However, the biggest issue she had with this battle was simply panicking. She has come along way in the game at this stage and fights have gone from simply -> attack, attack, attack, heal, attack, attack etc, to having to deal with unexpected status effects changing the game. When Reflect was cast on her, she had to take her time to go through her magic menu's trying to find the appropriate spell to remove reflect (Good first try using Ensuna, very close with DeSpell and finally there with DeBarrier), all the while, Proud Clod is still firing away. And on every successive hit, she's getting more worked up about the fact she hasn't solved the status effect and this is causing her to make mistakes such as casting the DeSpell on Proud Clod before she cast it on herself.

However, the power of her characters is formidable and even though she refuses to believe that Meteorain hits for more than Finishing Touch (probably my own pet peeve in her gameplay style), after a limit from Cloud, Proud Clod falls and she lets out a breath of relief and has to go for a relaxing brew before she contemplates picking up the game again. Being the nice guy I am, I casually remind her about saving before and after boss fights and she does before she goes near Hojo. In the lead up to the battle between herself and the mad doctor, she is surprised to learn about Sephiroth being Hojo's son, a twist worthy of any soap opera! With that startling revelation out of the way she beings the battle with Hojo and probably onto one of the hardest of the game.

The first form of Hojo, which usually is quite quick to dispatch was a surprising uphill struggle. After he summons his two monster allies, she concentrated on taking out one. After successfully knocking the enemy out after 2 or 3 rounds, Hojo simply revives him. Logic here dictates that if Hojo will do this after the enemy is killed, Hojo should be the main target, a train of thought she grasped perfectly in the Shinra building all the way back in Disk 1 after getting Red XIII. However she spent another few rounds concentrating on the same enemy and it was only due to the effects of her magic3 linked to All materia, occasionally hitting Hojo as well as her preferred target that she got through the first phase of the battle.

The second phase went far smoother with a constant barrage of magic attacks, the arm disappeared quite quickly. Reappearing only once, a constant (and expensive) barrage of Ultima, Comet2 and Summons knocked this level of Hojo out before he really had a chance to do any significant damage. At this stage she's getting worried as Hojo has transformed for the third round and she is unsure just how many there will be. This is reinforced by the realisation that she is flying through her resources and her spells of choice are all using over 100MP per turn.

In an ironic twist of faith, as Hojo reappears the third time, he casts Silence and sleep on two of the characters and her the importance of having a dedicated healer kicks in. Trying to keep the characters in the battle, the one remaining player (Cloud) is constantly buffing the trio, using Barrier and MBarrier as well as Regen, trying to minimise the damage of Hojo's Combo attacks. While she has approx 3500HP per character, two of Hojo's Combos in a row, with barriers on, is reducing the HP of her characters significantly and the status effect of Sleep/Silence at the end is equally frustrating to Ms. RedXIV. What is getting damage off Hojo, If any, is the fact that Barret has Counter Materia equipped and after every second hit within Hojo's Combo, he is retaliating with average hits of 1500 damage. His Ungarmax limit break has been unlocked after the Proud Clod battle and it is this that ends up saving the day for us. Using a remedy on Barret, to try and get any attackers back in the game, the limit that we tried to use almost 2 minutes previously finally kicks in and taking a stunning amount of damage off Hojo, finally finishes the battle.

She's tired but very proud of herself and is sitting back and enjoying the "Find a reason to fight" conversation. She probably won't admit it but she is getting far more involved with the story than she lets on and when we reach the stage where the characters are to return to the bridge of the Highwind, Yuffie is the last to arrive and I can't help but feel a little sense of relief as the conversation leading up to Yuffie's return indicated she will not actually do so. After the conversation, the Change Disk screen appears, and she is visible chuffed. She knows Disk 3 is alot shorter than the others and I told her I'd tell her a bit more about the quests etc in the game on the 3rd disk so we spend about 20 mins discussing things like Ultimate Weapons, Level 4 limit breaks, rare materia and Chocobo Breeding.

From that talk, I can safely say, she will not be chocobo breeding. I told her it took me about 7 or 8 hours to get a Gold Chocobo and she is simply not willing to invest the time. Which is fair enough. I've also suggested she create a separate save file for when she enters the crater in case she wants to explore the world afterwards as I know once she enters the crater, she won't be turning back.

Third disk! I didn't know if we'd get here. And while I would have used this disk to explore and fart about, she's got a hunger in her eyes for beating the game. She even had her brother over last night, while she was playing and had him start a new game on the PS3, while she was on the couch beside him on the PSP. She has also stated for the first time that FF9 is the next one she is going to try which is very inspiring.

Not too much longer guys, I probably won't do big updates for the farting around on Disk 3, the last of the big updates will hopefully be a full on Start of Northern Crater -> End Credits.

I don't know exactly when this will happen but hopefully it will be soon!

The final boss can be nasty without doing some sidequests and for a newbie that forgets to cast debarrier on him. I know that after the fight before the submarine it was the only fight that gave me trouble in the game. I couldn't beat it until I went back and did some sidequests first.

Also make sure she doesn't go into the crater before she has completed the Lucrecia (sp?) sidequest and returned to nibelheim to find out about Zack.

Go there on Disc 3 and get the scene, leave for about half an hour, maybe fight a few battles, head back in and you get the final scene.

Really? Sweet :D Didn't want her to miss out on this epic bit of story, she was really shocked by the Hojo thing so the Vincent/Lucrecia/Sephiroth connection should be good too

Yep you can do all the sidequests on Disc 3. A lot of them are just timed like the hints the chocobo guy gives about breeding a black chocobo.

Can't wait for the big showdown.
    she'll do OK.

There are gargoyles in the crater that get an uninterruptible Petrify on one party member and an uninterruptible L4 death on the entire party.
If you take requests RedXIV, will you remember to include precisely how she deals with this encounter. I think they're one of a few enemies in FFVII that you're just better off running away from.

She didnt like the idea of blue/green/black and GOLD chocobo???!!! And the uber cool Knights of round summon? :P May be pay a visit to the chocobo sage, i remember his house is pretty cool. and please at least visit the underwater submarine for a tiny bit extra story, i don't think you need to finish the quest iirc.

And don't forget to show her the Cactuar island! Should be a laugh for anyone who see them the first time :D

Chocobo rearing is a complete pain in the nads. She is better off staying away from it.
