Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Probably best to contract the Orderly Room of your old unit.

Still having no luck with a bed and breakfast close by... Is it possible to get the ferry across from cobh? Does that drop you off near haulbowline? I have to be there at 7:30am so whats the earliest it leaves?

If you still have nothing at this stage, then get a room in the Hotel in Carrigaline, and book a cab to get you there in time.
Naval Boat transport is for naval personnel only, unless it expressly says you can use it in your email. The river ferry from cobh crosses to nowhere near Haulbowline. I suggest you look at the map on osi.ie to see where you are going(google maps thinks haulbowline doesn't exist)

Just after finding one in Raffeen, the place you mentioned in your earlier post... Looks to be a bit of a distance away... About 4/5km? Which would be easily walkable depending on the weather!

Its a good walk, footpath all the way, but won't you be expected to do fitness thingys on the day?
For the sake of personal comfort, book a cab to bring you there. There are loads of companys in Carrigaline. I'm sure the B&B would have a few reliable ones.

If theres a few of us heading down on the same dates it would make sense to stay at the same place and share the taxi in the morning.. Anyone down on the 28th?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭Dr.Sanchez

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

Yeah, ye shouldn't worry about the interview if you've both done it already and got on grand :)

    Hows your fitness?

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

Well lads. Was down there today for medical and fitness, didn't have to do another interview and neither did the other lads. Looks like its about 40 they're taking on but i'm not sure how many are expected down!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭Dr.Sanchez

Cool, how many lads were down with ya? Did any fail the medical or fitness?

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

There was 6 of us there, one or two never turned up.. No-one failed either but i think a couple lads might have to repeat parts of the medical!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭Dr.Sanchez

The more who don't turn up the better, right? Take it you flew it? How's the run? All flat ground?

Congrats anyway, hopefully u get it!

Cheers mate and best of luck to you too! The more the better is right ;) Yea the run was grand, mostly flat ground with just a little incline on the bridge, just pace yourself and you'll be fine!

Cheers for getting back to us chap, I'm down now on Thursday, puts my mind at ease knowing I don't have to do the interview again, well more than likely I don't anyways seeing as you and the other lads didn't have to, I should fly through the fitness test and have no problems with the medical, suppose they are just going to pick the best of the best though so hopefully too many aren't getting called back!

You have been warned :p
Btw which one were you rockagusroll?

I'm a bit worried about my run, have my test next week and only ran the distance today in exactly 11 minutes which is not flattering by any means, and does not leave much room for error. I think though I might be taking it too easy at the start and wasting time and then start to panic when I look at the distance I have to make up. How long after the push ups and sit ups do you start the run and do you all warm up before this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭Dr.Sanchez

I presume its the same as the army. They do it right after the push ups and sit ups, but do a pretty good warm up before hand.

Are you running on flat ground or with hills? Don't forget to take that into consideration... By the way, 11 mins is still a pass!

Thanks for the reply. I did it on a treadmill today in the gym which is worrying because the treadmill seems easier than out on the road. will just have to do it on the road tomorrow and see how I do.
Ya I know,at least i'm currently passing but ideally I would like to be doing it in about 10mins.
How achievable would it be to cut my time by a minute in 7 days, would u think?

Marathon runner once told me to not let the treadmill fool you into thinking your running... Get out on the road instead!

Find a stretch of road 2.4km long and mark the half way point... Then pace yourself, when you reach half way pick up the pace a bit more and try hold it! Give yourself a rest the day before you go down though, last thing you want to do is overtrain!

Ya that is good advice, was thinking something along those lines today. Thanks for your help, will do that tomorrow evening and i will see how i get on. Best of luck to you as well by the way, hopefully all goes well for us.cheers

You'll do a quick warmup around the parade square first then you go into the gym for the pushups followed by the sit-ups and then it's straight out for the run. It's flat enough so just worry about pacing yourself and you'll be grand, as said above, 11 mins is still a pass! Best of luck :)

I done my run this morning 1.5miles in 11mins and 30 sec. Not bad for my first run. But still not good enough. I dif could of done better I could of push myself more. Ill go for another run tomorrow after work and hopefully there will be an improvement.

Another thing regarding the LA 89 certificate that they want from you if you were in the reserve or PDF. Iv just found What I thought was my la 89 cert. But it doesnt say la89 cert on it. It just says Certicate of discharge and in it is my serving number, name, address, the amount of days effective service, start date, finish date and reason for discharge......etc

Anyone know if this the La 89 Cert or if I can just bring this instead??

    Cheers in advance.
