Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A long time ago I used to collect manga from forbidden planet in Dublin, but the prices became outrageous, so I stopped...so I was wondering if the other place had roughly the same prices (20 euros for a book I can get for 7 in spain), or are they a reasonable price?

EDIT: Also, I found various links to the Anime And Manga Society Of Dublin, one in your signature, which links to a DCU site, and the anime.ie one, but neither work :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Art_Wolf

Yeah fraid prices are still a big pain :/

You'll find most manga pricedaround the ~14euro mark but still go to france etc and they are 5-7euro >_<

Heh yeah, hadnt noticed I'd misspelled the url ^_^;; fixed now.

Thank You, I Will Try Sub City Then ^_^

Your best bet for animé in Ireland is a good net connection cause 90% of the stuff you buy here is crap or teeeeeeeeeerribly over priced. so you can,

1 - Get a healthy broadband connection and dload it, cause there is a lotta great animé that's never put up for USA or European release, or it takes faaaaar too long untill it's done. And personally, I prefer subs instead of dubs.

    or

    2 - Import it from places like Play.com or CDwow.ie or CDuniverse.com

It drives me insane hearing people say that Animé is all the same or looks all the same or is just crap. But in terms of the selection of animé that we have to choose from in this country, I can see where these people are coming from....

    Virgin - The Square, Tallaght

Has once again put up an anime section, but this time are tring to make an effort. Nothing special however, at least for the moment, you can pick things like Princess Mononoke or Kiki's Delivery Service at around €30. Since the section has only been there a month it might be worth giving them some time to build the collection. They also have a decent martial arts section beside the anime.

How much do mangas cost in Ireland? I'm going to Dublin and I'd like to know ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭carbonkid

I agree with graki if your going to buy anime you better off getting it on-line on play.com or maybe bargainanime.com.

Ive seen some good offers in hmv or tower but all the comic shops are total rip off!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Art_Wolf

Anime and manga areseriously overpriced in Ireland. You'll find most small volumes - Tokyo pop etc, retailing at 12-13 euro. This compared to the French price of ~7 euro Im told :/

I've picked up some nice stuff in Tower Records - dvds at 12 euro during sale etc..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 Dianora

Here in Finland Tokyopop's and VIZ's mangas cost in every store 12€. There is one shop where you can get Tpop's mangas with 10€, but their selection is quite small.

Do you know where you can get any Anime figures other than forbidden planet? That shop is too expensive and I don't really like it that much... And for that person talking about how much the manga are, I buy most of mine for about 11:30 each, tokyo pop ones. For some reason, Vu seem to be a bit more expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Art_Wolf

Hmm well both Sub City and 3rd Place sell models though they are more of the comic book end. I'd really avoid buying that stuff in Ireland - order online will be much much cheaper!

All those titles are Viz, and Sub City won't/don't import Viz. Not for religious reasons, but the importing clampdown makes it too much of a hassle. Besides you should probably be able to get Dragonball in bookstores soon - I believe thats one of the initial deal run by Gollanz.

Well, I order most of my magna off the internet (I like having it as a book rather then downloading) but shipping & handling is very expenisive. I've gotten Chobits in the new Eason's in Dundrum, the magna is ten euro there, but the selection is tiny and very, very bad.

The best I have found for Shipping & Handling charges is United Publications (http://www.up1.co.uk). Their shipping overhead on manga tends to hover around the +10..15% of order value. Its not order value based (weight as usual), they have a pricing guide which I have found to be spot on (checking cc bills). Basically they add 50p onto Irish deliveries, and thats it.

Archonia (http://www.archonia.com) aren't bad either if you can keep the weight under 2KG (roughly 5-7 manga volumes): +13€ onto the order. Don't go over it, its not a linear scale and at 4KG delivery is ~30€. You will have to wait about twice as long for delivery. Packaging is very robust.

I find that ordering from these guys, I can get manga cheaper than at retail anywhere in ireland (Easons or Forbidden Planet, which are the cheapest). I am not saving much though.

Play.com (http://www.play.com) is cheapest of all with delivery (free) but their selection is more limited and they are based exclusively on local distributers (ADV Manga, Tokyopop and limited Dark Horse titles). Be prepared for ISBN searches to get what you want however.

    Honourable mentions:
The Other Realms (http://www.otherrealms.com) have a web shop too, they track stock (but not accurately) but their delivery rates are pretty good (and fast). If you are desperate for a hard to get title, look them up too. They came in bigtime for me with the 8th Gunsmith Cats volume (it felt like they managed to track down the very last copy in all of Ireland and England).

They have gotten a few anime items in in Tower Records just off Grafton street. They have wall scrolls, a few posters, plushies, a few t-shirts and bags, and DVDs. The wall scrolls are about 24 euro, plushies from 8-30 euro, as with the DVDS. Also, in Easons on O' Connel street they have gotten quite a large selection of Manga at 10.60. They have stuff from DNAngel, Gravitation, Shutter Box and some samurai stuff.
Well, I hope my information is usefull... In Tower Records the stuff is on the second level, at the back past all of the comic type stuff, like the Batman Manga and Kurt Cobain and Eminem comics (wtf?) and they sometimes don't have stuff in, while other times they have loads in...So check it out every few weeks.

You can get Manga in any HMV / Virgin / or Golden Discs that do DVD's. Look out for sales/deals. About two months back Golden Discs where sellin a load of stuff for around €7. I ended up spending €35 and bagging about six DVD's.

Last week I treated myself to Appleseed which I bought for €26 in HMV blanchardstown S.C.

    In Limerick
The Comic Shop on Lower Gerald Griffin Street has a selection (sometimes good, sometimes small) of manga and anime. The animes are expensive (aren't they everywhere?) but the manga is very reasonably priced. www.thegatheringlimerick.com

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

There's also some stuff in Eason and O'Mahony's in Limerick too, but it's mostly Tokyopop ass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭Calm Horizons

Seems to be quite a large collection in HMV's World Cinema section on Grafton Street. A lot larger than it used to be, anyway.

:p I now feel a bit guilty that i've not been here before.

(Ignore the voices that are screaming "Oh, yes you were, just after the original Eirtaku boards closed down."... They lie, that was YEARS ago!)

I am endevering to broaden our sellection of Anime and manga here in Other Realms----More Box Sets, and new and 'interesting' manga.
And after i get the stock quanties correct I'll worry about the site.

But for now, its nice to see that anime is still as popular as ever

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

Well, the current eirtaku forums have been chugging along happily for the last couple of years, so you have no excuses ;)

Be nice if you'd like to take on some suggestions here of what would likely have a good reception. Having run EirtaKon and gotten to speak to a wide demographic of Irish fans has been enlightening. Perhaps OtherRealms would care to have a presence of some sort at the next EirtaKon?

I'd also be able to do you a good deal on getting that website overhauled ;)

You can contact me at either cult[at]anime.ie or cult[at]eirtaku.com.

10AM to 4PM if memory serves.

In Waterford, Sinnots used to be good for anime when they first started stocking it, but as time went by they never got any new releases in and only restocked the same dvds they first started getting 5 odd years ago

My advice: Import, Import, Import, Import, Import, Import. Or download it and hope to hell the site doesn't get a C'n'D letter from Funimation. I tried going down the homemarket road and bought a lot of my earlier stuff from Tower, Virgin and the 'Planet. Well, ya know what I say to that now? Screw 'em!

I won't spend between €30 to €40 on a title I know i can get for €10-€15 from the states!

Also I buy a lot of stuff direct from Japan but you need a fansub trans to paste on to the movie or learn conversational Japanese.

Any ways hope this helps someone.

The anime in Tower Records is waaayyyy better. They have more than Laser! And, they're even attempting to sell Manga!

Also, you can get manga in mah local library...How cool is that?! xD
Of course, they're totally crap...Sailor Moon and the likes, but still!
I remember years ago no one even knew what anime was! I'd walk into a video store and ask if they had any anime...They'd just look at me like I was crazy. xD

Omg, I bet this is some scheme by the Japanese to take over the world!

    Oh well.

i stopped buying anime releases in this country in the late 90's, when i discovered how the BBFC were cutting them. you really are better off buying them online. Just make sure you dont buy any freaky underage Lolikon Hentai ;) customs will NOT be happy lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭sharingan

Which titles? The BBFC haven't been cutting anything except the hentai for a long time. In fact the only thing that was unfairly cut was Paranoia Agent.

What is a far greater crime is the amount of TV station cutting.

ah yes, didnt they cut a hanging scene from Paranoia Agent? they might cut less now, but the fact that they still do even to a small extent turns me off buying UK dvds. not just anime.
my main love was always with the first wave of Manga releases in the early/mid 90's, as this is what i was first really exposed to. (manga mania anyone?!) i know a lot hate these now as a lot of them can been seen as just exploitation films. but some of the cuts made to them were simply stupid. yet to this day they still stand.
dont get me started on Urotsukidoji....

    o1s1n wrote:

Yes. I will check my copy against my fansubs. Its the only example I can think of where they have unfairly cut something. You can't even buy decent porn in the UK so I don't see why people get so upset at having their tentacle rape/exploding partner anime cut. Buit virtually every other title has been left uncut.

And if you are importing loli-porn be very aware of what you are getting into. Depictions of minors, even non-live action stuff can count as child porn. If your DVD copy of whatever gets seized, you might as well expect a visit.

I was in other realms and they had a sale on comics but NO MANGA i was so annoyed but i got some really cool and funny comics for 1euro each yay go me.

THERE IS GOING TO BE A MANGA CONVENTION IN IRELAND,

well in the UK you can now buy hardcore porn legally. they lifted the ban a little while ago. although, only in sex shops
    ..
what we need is are some anime only adult shops. then maybe we could all get our tenticle porn without any fuss :D

damn, that convention is on in northern Ireland :( too damn far.
