I had to laugh, when at circa 10:37pm (on a Sunday night) during the fight, Jimmy Magee poses the question -

"I wonder is there anybody in Oulart-The Ballagh training right now?"

Anyone know how Grainne Murphy got on, as I was working this am and missed her swim.

    Thanks a lot.
Grainne Murphy was also well below her best in the heats of the 400m freestyle, the 19-year-old some 10 seconds off her qualifying time as trailed home in eighth place. Murphy, whose training has been disrupted as she recovered from a virus this season, could only post a time of 4:19.07

There ya go ...........watch out for Grainne again next Thursday

Thanks. Ah, poor girl and not at all sure if she should have been put through this, as it does not seem at all, fair owing to the fact that she had Glandular Fever, which was played down and.

It takes so long to recover from that and they were so desperate for her to enter that they publicly called it a 'virus'. One wonders if the athletes personal choices are always being catered for, or are they influenced by their trainers to the extent that they push themselves to such limits to then suffer such disappointment?

Anyway, I do feel for her, as she is not at the level we all know she can be when fit enough.

Perhaps I have misunderstood this, but that is coming from official news on her.

He's from Davidstown , which is about 3 miles from Enniscorthy .........you're spending too much time listening to Jimmy Magee . :)

He's from the ballagh and i hate with a passion jimmy mcgee. haven't or won't be watching anything of the Olympics on rte. not when one can have 24 hd channels on a freesat hd box.:pac:

    Unlucky Grainne :
WEXFORD swim star Grainne Murphy has had to pull out of the 800m freestyle heats, thereby ending her London Olympics dream.

What a shame, but well done to her for all her efforts. She was not well enough really to have been put through, so don't know what her trainer was thinking... but on the other hand perhaps she insisted on giving it a go.

Afternoon tea on Wexford's only River Restaurant

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭havetoquit

Lovely pic and have you actually had the experience of the afternoon tea? If so would like to hear, as having a swarm of German friends over soon and wondered if it might be a nice idea for one of our days out. Where does it leave from and how long is the trip? Does it pass or disembark at any historical sites?

Afternoon tea on Wexford's only River Restaurant

Looks like you missed the boat:pac:

Had a good afternoon (despite the 2 torrential showers) at the 1798 re-enactment on Vinegar Hill.Great turnout despite the weather & good to see many were visitors to the town.

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭havetoquit

Thanks a bunch. I guess you haven't had the afternoon tea experience yourself then? If you had, it would be nice to hear first hand regarding the positives and any negatives. Funny how things can go so wrong, just at the time when you are taking guests to anything; Took some French friends to one particular place of interest where a period from our history is usually re- enacted and what happens? The actors who usually do this so amazingly well, could not be there that day and so we had a different bunch, who although doing their best, it was acutely obvious they were not in their comfort zone and it was all a bit flat. It is always good to hear of other's experiences, a little like Tripadvisor! Anyway, thanks again for the link...great!

Oh my! I attempted to go to the cinema on Saturday night picking a late show because I naively thought there'd be no one at it!!
Well! When we got there it was insane - cars abandoned everywhere huge queues. We gave up and decided to try again another night but even getting back out was trecherous with parked cars blocking the road and silly drivers trying to barge their way through.
Now I'll admit I was one of those naysayers who thought it was madness to put a cinema out so far but it was actually good to see it doing so well even if I didn't get to see a movie this time.

Had to laugh at the sign saying "spaces" though!!

Anyone know what showings are normally quiet?

Late shows in Wexford are normally the worse for parking as th early shows are not finished when you turn up for late shows. Saturday nights tend to be busiest but most other nights you can get parking ok

Would any of you great Wexford Clan out there be able to advise me on the cheapest Refuse collection company serving the county please.
I am using Wastepal, who appear to have increased their prices quite a lot since I started using them. They also take two less bins now, but the charge remains the same.

Thanks a lot, if you can help during these challenging economic times.

Speaking of being out in bad weather,I saw 2 council workers filling potholes with delay set tar yesterday in the spills of rain.A pointless waste of time.

Would have been better off digging cuttings to drain the water off the road.

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭havetoquit

Yes, see a lot of that...mad as hatters and they have been getting paid for doing daft things like that since I was a child and heard my father giving out about them. Well, I guess, it is their foreman who is the guilty party, but still, there surely comes a time when we all have to ask, Is this wise?

Got really fed up listening to my daughter in France describing her relaxed meals al fresco, either watching the sun coming up or going down, so I told her I will be there sitting beside her before she sends the next bulletin!

Have had enough of this rain and got a really cheapo aerlingus using my air miles so am over the moon.

No wonder they say that the people who live in an area of mid west US suffer bad depression owing to such dreadful weather with few days of brightness or sunshine...... beginning to understand how they feel!

There is only so much of indoor pursuits; swimming, cinema etc you can do without feeling the effects of lack of fresh air and sunlight.

Ah well, September could bring the summer we have been denied.....

Forecast is for SUN on Saturday....fingers crossed it's true.

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭havetoquit

Hope so too. Asked my daughter to send us some from her sunny balcony in France. After all, they have been having sun every day almost since I was there in May!! Lucky devils,

Spoke to a lovely Dublin couple who run a pub down in the South of France and they told me that they initially only planned to stay for a year, but they decided that their quality of life was so much better, even by just waking up to sunshine on so many weeks of the year, so now they have permanent residency,

I think a whole group of us sun lovers from Boards should buy a lovely old rustic farmhouse in Provence, grow our own produce and live sunnily ever after near a beautiful old cobbled stoned Medieval village!!!!!!!!! We could log on to boards and Skype home from our terrace, with chilled Chardonay in hand, watching the sun go down over the vineyards and olive groves... the waft of Lavendar floating in from the nearby fields and the taller sunflowers looking down on them from higher ground.

Yes, I have lost it now guys, but the temptation of a little escapism was too much, when I have to listen to fierce rain pounding off my window. It looks and feels like December without the Christmas tree and I want August as it should be.

Ah, only joking of course... so many people in draught torn regions would give so much for what we have, so my ranting and raving was only in jest.

Oh I see them now. The sky is amazing in that pic isn't it?

Bannow very mild and warmish today with no wind to speak of.

Still, looks like rain this evening, so best make the most of it.

Just heard about an 18yr old boy who died after a long night of partying. So sad and so terrible for any family to deal with. Apparently he suffered some kind of collapse and never recovered.

Anyone agree that drug and substance awareness be taught in schools?
It is taught in some schools in Europe and the children are brought to drug units and centres for Alcoholism to see and hear at first hand the impact of such abuse.

They are educated about the different types of drugs, their strengths, their effects and the symptoms they can produce etc.

If they see this while they are very young it could help.

Yes and it would do no harm to let them see the unfortunates who are living on the streets, sleeping under bridges, using parks to fix and throw their needles etc etc.

If they are totally sheltered from these things until they are teenagers and succumb to peer pressure and so on, then it is often too late.

Of course we could say the responsibility for all of this should go to parents, but then how many teenagers full of optimism and enthusiasm for new experiences will really take their parents seriously and sadly many parents prefer to leave them isolated in their rooms with passive hobbies such as games and surfing the net and often don't even take their meals together.

My young lad did TY year before last - he said they hardly got a week in the year when they didn't get a talk about drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. So, despite being Ireland, that stuff has improved. You just get people thinking it'll never happen to them.
