A pretty horrendous Anime that I'm not recommending in the Anime thread.

    Disgraceful stuff!!!

Miyazaki is Anime done well. There's so much ****e Anime out there it's unbelievable.

Odd, I'm quite a fan of Papika. It's not Satoshi Kon's best - I'd reserve that title for Millenium Actress - but it's imaginative and clever nonetheless, with a spectacular soundtrack. I do agree it's messy in terms of pacing and narrative, but the good outweighs the bad IMO.

TT - Closer to the Edge

Good doc, very funny in lots of places.
For someone who doesn't care much for motorbikes, it was still very entertaining.

Saw this the other day. Likewise I'm no motorbike enthusiast at all, but this is top notch stuff with some amazing footage. Only saw the 2D version and would love to see the 3D one. It's currently rating at 100% for critics and 97% for audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

1939. Similar to later Disney films e.g. pair of cute birds, slouching characters, songs, same humour.

    The Raven
The macabre and lurid tales of Edgar Allan Poe are vividly brought to life - and death - in this stylish, gothic thriller. When a madman begins committing horrific murders inspired by Poe's darkest works, a young Baltimore detective joins forces with Poe in a quest to get inside the killer's mind in order to stop him from making every one of Poe's brutal stories a blood chilling reality. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, which escalates when Poe's love becomes the next target

Entertaining stuff overall, but the ending was'nt great imo.

Went to see John Carter tonight; its a good movie and I'd definitely recommend it but I should say that if I wore a watch I'd have been checking it a few times as it felt quite long. Still worth watching though.

The Red Balloon - Short, simple, wonderful. The tale of a boy and his 'pet' balloon set in 1950s Paris. It's a beautiful fantasy, full of gorgeous imagery, movement, energy, colour and humour. But the film ultimately takes on a deeper allegorical meaning, and it's what makes it transcend a mere innocent fantasy into a true classic. It's thirty minutes long, but it achieves so much in that time with barely a word uttered.

Also, is it wrong that I'm more impressed with the effects of a 1950s film about a red balloon than I am by most CGI spectacles? Must have been a seriously challenging film to choreograph!

Check out Flight of the Red Balloon from Hsiao-hsien Hou. It's quite similar to the Red Balloon and pays tribute a number of times. It's on Netflix and is a nice, light piece of cinema that will leave you with a smile on your face.

My housemate and I tried to watch Happiness this evening. I think you have to be in a certain mindset to watch it. It being a lazy Saturday evening, we definitely weren't in that mindset.

Halfway through Happiness we gave up and watched Frost/Nixon instead. :)

You should give defo give it another try, its an excellent film, though difficult to watch at times I'd agree, I'd also recommend its sort of sequel "Life During Wartime" another great, offbeat film:

I saw it when it was out in the cinema a few years ago. I recall liking it, but only remember small details about it.

    The Big Year:

Wasn't a fan of this at all. Despite Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black as the main characters, I say I laughed about 3 times during the course of it.

It was a pretty wasted opportunity to be honest.

    Young Adult:

Pretty enjoyable overall but quite sad in that Charlize Theron's character just can't seem to let go of the past and move on.
The scene towards the end when she mentions the miscarriage is pretty sad and I must admit I had one or two tears in my eye at that stage.

    Pretty decent and heart warming.

    Safe House:

Decent enough action film. Not ground breaking but it's pretty well shot. Very fast paced. Slightly like the way 'The Bourne Ultimatum' was shot.

The action scenes are decent but
figuring out who the good cop and the bad cop were was very predictable and was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more of a guessing game involved.

    The Raven:

Very enjoyable film. Reminded me of a mix between Sherlock Holmes and Saw an awful lot. Very good mystery thriller and I accidentally burst out laughing in the cinema when a shocked audience member behind me shouted out "oh fúcking hell" really loudly during the
pendulum scene when the critic was being sawn in half.

Very good "whodunit" film and a pretty good performance from John Cusack. Think a less flamboyant but more manic version of Sherlock Holmes.

Very enjoyable and well worth a watch.

Boogie Nights – Surprisingly I had only seen it once. Goes down as one of my all time favourites. Some sterling performances, surely someone made off with an Oscar for that film? And I don’t mean Walhberg.

The Raven - went to see this last night, wasnt entirely sure what to expect tbh, but definitly wasnt disapointed.
i just got lost in it from start to finish, Sweeney Todd/Sleepy Hollow/Saw but much better would be my comparison, the romantic on the side bit wasnt just tacked on but also wasnt taking away from the rest of the movie.

plus John Cusack is hot in it ;), as he is in most of his movies but this time he had a great look about him, all in all great entertainment.

Wanderlust - slow to start off but once it got into it was hilarious in places, Paul Rudd is really growing on me as a proper funny guy in movies!
plus the long haired guy in it, jennifer anistons husband in real life apparrantly, HOT! only in that movie though :)

Once upon a time a little man was happy with
his family and then they got killed...

and then the little man got to hitting back as he
    could'nt take no more...

he got a name for himself.

    Paul Kersey.

that man ruffled so much feathers he should
    be considered a hero.

    Anyways...

DEATH WISH. One of The Winner's best films along
    with THE SENTINEL.

    You can forget the rest.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - I thought this was a very good comedy with some poignant scenes along the way. Tom Wilkinson was excellent playing a gay man searching for the man he loved decades earlier. There were some genuinely funny moments in this and Maggie Smith's character delivers most of the laugh out loud lines. Well worth going to see in the cinema.

Titanic - haven't seen it since I was 12 or so (when I saw it 7 times in the cinema!). I still like it, it's watchable though some bits are a wee bit cringe-y.

Casino:brilliant stuff from Scorsese and his usual band of merry men (Robert deNiro and Joe Pesci). The rise and spectacular fall of the Mob-Controlled Las Vegas. Stomach-churningly violent at points, but the story rips along. Almost 3 hours long, but such a brilliant film, the time flies by.

The Prestige: Christopher Nolan directs this Victorian-era tale of two rival magicians (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) who will go to any lengths to outdo one another. Everyone around them is merely a pawn to be used to try and gain an upper hand. It also contains more twists and turns than most films and is stunningly brilliant. Well worth a watch.

Scream Trilogy: harmless fun as teenagers get killed by the seemingly immortal killer Ghostface (the voice is so creepy). Great fun and classic 90's horror with a good dash of self-depricating humour thrown in for good measure!

Considering the news of a sequel I thought I'd go back to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure since I hadn't seen it in yeeeeeaaaaars.

Jesus, time hasn't been good to this film. It had some funny bits (Like Keanu going "Woooowoowowoooah!!" every now and again :pac:) but overall was a bit flat and the bodacious dialogue gets old fast. It's a fat slice of harmless 80's cheese.

If anything, I'm interested now in how they'll make Bill & Ted 3 work.............if at all.

Ive been busy watching films since Monday.

A Seperation. Such an amazing movie. Hard to pick who is right and who is wrong, which makes it very human. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish

Europa Europa. Strange to call a WWII survivor story funny, but this had great comedy in it, which I suppose is needed to make the hardships more bareable. The protaganist was a real chameleon. This is probably the best non warfare WWII film I have seen, although I am due a rewatch of Schindlers list.

Point break. Awesome movie. Definate classic, despite Swayze being the only one in it who can act. Love this movie.

Special Forces. French Movie about a botched rescue mission to free reporter Diane Kruger from the Taliban. Like Black Hawk Down in the mountains really, but very good nonetheless.

Bloodsport. Keeping with my forgotten gem mood of movies lately, I watched this last night for the first time in about 15 years. I'd like to say Its aged badly, but I think it looked aged when it came out. Its great fun though.

Dirty Harry. Caught it on TCm the other night. Seen it 10 million times, but come on, its awesome :D

There was another film, but for the liofe of me I cant remember what it was...

    Paul:

Quite a silly film overall but I laughed countless times throughout. It wasn't necessarily funny but I burst out laughing when
they walk into the country/Western bar and the Cantina music from Star Wars is playing in the background on fiddles etc. Hilarious and a very subtle comedic moment I thought.

It's a very enjoyable film overall and lots of various sci-fi movie references throughout.

Mutants; French zombie fare with similarities to 28 Days Later and I Am Legend. Not great, but not the worst zombie movie I've seen. Hell, it's not even the worst zombie movie I've seen this week.

alien was on telly again last night.

didnt mean to watch the whole thing but just got sucked right into it.

the suit looks dodgy as hell in places now but its STILL a cracking film that holds up incredibly well for when it was made on the effects front.

    no mean feat.

got me nicely pumped for prometheus.

    My favourite is when

yep T2 is ancient - hard to believe lol. Jurassic park is that old?! Jaysis... Hell, Happy Gilmore is from 96, yet it's one of the best comedys I've seen, much funnier that todays stuff IMO. That's the thing - the cartoons and comedys that I grew up in as a kid in the 90's, were far more amusing than today's series. Kenan & Kel being a prime example!
