The following is a list of mammals and bird species that have no open season and are fully protected under both Irish and European laws/Directives. They cannot be shot, trapped, interfered with or even moved from their habitat without a licence and prior authorisation through the relevant body/organisation.

    Mammals
    • Badger
    • Pine Marten
    • Hedgehog
    • All Bat species
    • Otter
    • Red Squirrel
    • Pygmy Shrew
    • Stoat
Other mammals are also fully protected, however as they are not considered game, and the chances of coming upon these animals is slim to none, i have omitted them. They include Seals, Porpoise, Dolphins, etc.

As there are hundreds if not thousands of species of birds the list of protected species would be extensive. So as per J.R's post it is easier to state the following:

    Birds
    • All birds not listed above are fully protected by Irish and EU Directives and have no open season, and cannot be shot or trapped.
