From 1st year to second year did 16 people actually drop out? Is the second year that more intense??

Oh sorry I wasn't clear enough, these are the results that each year got last summer. They represent different classes.

Ah, I thought it was a representation of one class from inception to completion, makes sense, still shocking that not a single person achieved a 1:1 :)
I know someone who went the GEM route and graduated this year, I dont know what he got but he got offered a place in Galway. He said around 160 people didn't get spots within Ireland.

Irish/EU students get first choice on intern spots, even if they get a pass grade they will get a spot over a non-EU student with a 1.1. Maybe these 160 were non-EU students. I know a lot of the US students from my class who will chance their arm and apply for an Irish internship to keep all their options open. I doubt there were any Irish students who didn't get an internship

Thanks, just a question you might know, ratio of spots in dublin to that of dublin grads for both gem and uem.

As far as I know, the HSE guarantees an Intern spot for all Irish/EU students.

Would you recommend a certain uni depending on what you want to specialise in?

    E.g.

    Ophthalmology

    Fertility treatments

    radiology

    Hey UL student :)

Congrats on securing a place on the course.

I'm sitting the GAMSAT this september. I am coming from a non-science background and I am finding it quite difficult and elusive to pin down and refine my studies for section III.

Can I ask how you managed to this? Any help/advice or even notes would be greatly recieved.

    Mise do Chara,

    Michael

    Hi Michael!

Thank you for your kind words :)

For the science section, I kept my study approach quite broad. I found a list of topics to study in Griffith's (I think) or if not, then online somewhere. Each day i wouls focus on one or two topics depending on how I was for time. I would study with the intention of understanding the concepts rather than memorising equations and definitions. This is especially true for org chem.
I watched a lot of Khan Academy videos online (https://www.khanacademy.org/) and they really helped me grasp concepts I was not comfortable in. In my honest opinion, I don't think anyone can cover every topic that could possibly come up, so try and not get 'sucked into' the wormhole that is the science section, but try your best to understand the rationale behind the concepts.

The GAMSAT will through lots of information down on the page, but you need to take a step back and think about what the broad picture is.

I hope this helps. PM me if you'd like something more detailed.

Wishing you the very best of luck.

Yeah, last year at 08:57 on July 31st i received notification of my offer from CAO.

    Not long now!

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭loopylulu

Durf did you end up starting last year? If so how did you find it? Any words of wisdom before the final decisions!

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 Durf

Hey loopylulu, no i didn't start last year. Got UL but decided i needed to wait a year. Have UL as number 1 again. Afraid I have no words of wisdom to offer. Are u undecided about the course and/or college choice?

I hope my transcripts were ok....Trinity sent me the photocopy of my final two year transcripts which don't actually look like the " ORIGINAL" transcripts as requested and then proof of my degree was just a written letter from the university....Does this sound like it might be inadequate?

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 Durf

Hey gaffer, think you should be ok. Mine consisted of transcripts stamped by the university and a copy of my degree parchment certified by a Garda. In any case i am certain they have the wherewithal to liaise directly with Trinity should they have any further questions.

Thanks Durf. Not undecided just very worried that I'm risking a lot for a job/lifestyle that is going to be pretty tough for the next 10 years. The course itself I know I will love, it's afterwards and the type of life it will lead to. I'm a worrier in general and now I've got this far it's keeping me awake at night wondering if it a the right decision.
I rang the college last week, they are all meeting with cao this week to review documentation and if there are any issues cao will email you. I'm away on hols soon so wanted to check if there would be any problems with what I sent. From trinity I got a transcript with the 4 years results on it and a sentence confirming my degree awarded and the year. Never sent a copy of the degree parchment. Was told that should be sufficient anyway.

Hi there! You could always email Admissions of your chosen university (or any of the colleges really) and they should be able to advise you, and if not as Loopylulu said they will email if they need more information.

It's published on the CAO site too that Round Zero offers are out July 30th from 6 am! Excitement and nerves here too, first choice UL, fingers crossed for everyone! :)

You are not the only one. Would i be correct to suppose ur in ur early thirties or above? I will be 30 starting. Seem to find many of that age, including myself, frequently reflect on that...ie will love the course dubious of what life will be like heading to 40! Hasn't kept me awake but major focal point this past year. Seems crazy to give up ones current lifestyle for what some may interpret as a stressful demanding career.

Watched a great TED talk from a health psychologist recently (https://youtu.be/RcGyVTAoXEU ). Talks about managing stress or challenging circumstance and the importance of how we see things. In the end she finishes with a quote from research that was an encouragement:

“One thing we know for certain is that chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort…. Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life, and then trust yourself to be able to handle the stress.”

Cheers for that link. My mum's a health psych and is encouraging me to do it.
I'm 30 soon, if I was younger I'm sure I wouldn't have worried so much. Although I guess we will have experience and wisdom on our side now!
