Been trying to book a consultation for my first tattoo with Wildcat. Not a great start. I was having a bit of a chat with whoever I was emailing (odd that they don't sign their names), and s/he said that there were plenty of artists free at any time I wanted in the first week of February. I replied asking if I could meet with Darren Cepeda on the morning of the 3rd. I sent that around their closing time so obv didn't get a reply that night. This morning I got an email from obviously someone totally different who didn't bother reading who I wanted to see, and it just said "you're seeing Krzys at 4.30pm on the 2nd". A bit annoying.

    Hi raze_them_all,

I had a look at his work and it's great but not at all what I'm looking for. The website says he likes to do portraits and blacks/greys. What I have in mind is a very colourful floral :(

Try Racheal at the same shop she's excellent.

Quick few questions: Which Wildcat does Attila work out of? I've seen his portfolio and his work is incredible in regards to detail, shading and colour but I wonder will he refer me to someone else if I come to him asking for a flower and skull on my calf?
Also, how much do Wildcat normally charge per hour of work?

It's best to book if only to make sure the artist is working that day.

The lyrics were written by Watkins mainly, and some parts of the sleeve I have half designed incorporate drawings from album booklets that he would have designed, so its awkward :/ Ive thought long and hard about it over the past year or so and I still want my Lostprophets tattoos because of how much the band mean to me.

Hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a problem getting them done as I'm sure only (former) fans of the band would recognise the lyrics and symbols wise it'd take a pretty hard core fan alright.

(I think I'll have to amend the part I had with Watkins' autograph. Prime example of why you should hold off on tattoos, guys)

I got my sixth LPs/Watkins tattoo about 7 months ago, I didn't have any problems then even though the story had come out (although he hadn't been convicted yet) so I'm in the same position I guess about getting more done. Have you talked to anyone yet?
That's gas though, my first was of his autograph. :/

Yeah it's not as if tattoos are on ya for life, tell you what, give me 20 an hour and I'll knock something up for ya

Using that logic you a could pay serious money for a ****e tattoo.

Paying 100 an hour doesn't guarantee anything.

    Good lad.

100 an hour is standard for most good studios. It covers materials, rent, wages, etc.

Generally, you get what you pay for with tattoos.

Whats an average hourly wage for an artist?

I'm not an artist, so I couldn't tell you.

If you're querying the price, it's simple - good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. :)

Probably for the best, IF money is a concern when it comes to putting something on your body for life then tattoo's are not for you.

    Good lad.

Most studios will do a set price for a large piece of work, which works out a bit cheaper than 100 an hour.

Honestly, save up rather than cheap out on it. It's going to be on you for life, you don't want crap work done. Realistically, it only works out at a couple of cent for each day it's on your body.

But if you want it done, save over thd next year or so. You'll get better work, and something that looks great.

Fixing a bad tattoo is more expensive than getting a good one, believe me.

Lads, reign the antagonism in please.

Mcgragger you wouldn't pay less than €80 per hour for any decent artist. Many are more. If you want something that you will be proud to have on your body rather than one that you'll be ashamed of, this is the reality that you will have to come to terms with. Best idea is find an artist whose work you really like. Talk to them, find out how much they would want to do it, then save up for it!

Just out interest, what were you expecting?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Dermighty

A few people in work have showed me their new tattoos and said "it was only €250!" and I could see why immediately, some really sh!tty work on most of them, that was obviously without knowing the price.

Price snobbery isn't what people are trying to get at by saying that €100 an hour is what to expect.

You can either get the tattoo done by someone who does tattoos or you can get it done by somebody with a proven track record of excellent work that you know will do a good job. It's easier to find a cheap, sh!t artist than to find a good artist. Obviously tattoos are expensive but put the artist quality before the price and work out how much you want the tattoo compared to the cost compared to how long you are willing to wait to get it done.

Chris Crooks in White Dragon in Belfast is £125 an hour (that's sterling) and he is booked out until 2015 or something like that. You may scoff at the price, but then go to Facebook and look at his work and you'll see why.

If you want to pay €50 an hour or whatever you want then by all means do, none of us really give a f*ck. But it's wise to take other people opinions into consideration, you don't have to agree with any of us but the general concensus is that €80 an hour is the usual price.

Best of luck with your choice anyway, you'll be the one looking at it :)

I wholeheartedly agree with Dermighty's sage words.
I've only got one tattoo so far- the Mondoshawan symbols for Earth, Wind, Fire and Water on my left wrist. It's a basic design that I've wanted since I was 16. I got it when I was about 23 and it cost €80 in Stigmata-Tau in Swords.
I'm now in the process of sourcing Atilla from Wildcat Ink for my next piece which will be a detailed number on my calf. I want only the best and as a perfectionist, I've browsed through loads of portfolios in a bid to find the best artist who will create a tattoo that I will be proud to wear forever on my body. The price is not what drives me- it's getting a professional, brilliant artist to ensure I get something I'm happy with and if it means saving for a year or two, then I have no qualms about that.
It really is this simple: Cheap tats a'int good and good tats a'int cheap.

Jasus but em yea there are other god artists in Wildcat and plenty of oter good studios in Dublin as well. Tell people what ya have in mind and you will get recommendations based on that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 Meelah

I believe Rachel in Wildcat specialises in very colourful pieces, how about going in for a chat with her?

I've been thinking about getting my first tattoo. It will (probably) be a simple line art of a deer on my lower leg. Can anyone recommend good studios (in Dublin) or give any tips to a first-timer? How does the process usually work, do you have a consultation before the appointment for example? Thanks.
