Ye sons of France, awake to glory,
Hark, hark! what myriads bid you rise!
Your children, wives and white-haired grandsires.
Behold their tears and hear their cries! (repeat)
    Shall hateful tyrants, mischiefs breeding,
With hireling hosts, a ruffian band,
    Affright and desolate the land,
While peace and liberty lie bleeding?

To arms, to arms, ye brave!
    The avenging sword unsheath,
    March on, march on!
    All hearts resolv'd
    On victory or death!

Now, now, the dangerous storm is rolling
    Which treacherous kings confederate raise!
The dogs of war, let loose, are howling,
And lo! our fields and cities blaze! (repeat)
alt: And lo! our homes will soon invade!
And shall we basely view the ruin
While lawless force with guilty stride
    Spreads desolation far and wide
With crimes and blood his hands embruing?

To arms, to arms, ye brave!...

    With luxury and pride surrounded
    The vile insatiate despots dare,
Their thirst of power and gold unbounded,
To mete and vend the light and air! (repeat)
Like beasts of burden would they load us,
Like gods would bid their slaves adore,
But man is man, and who is more?
Then shall they longer lash and goad us?

To arms, to arms, ye brave!...

O Liberty, can man resign thee
Once having felt thy generous flame?
Can dungeons, bolts or bars confine thee
Or whips thy noble spirit tame? (repeat)
Too long the world has wept, bewailing
    That falsehood's dagger tyrants wield,
But freedom is our sword and shield,
And all their arts are unavailing.

To arms, to arms, ye brave!..

*A single tear rolls down thine cheek*

Thanks for that wonderfully informative post. I must congratulate you on not presenting any sweeping statements, generalisations or over-simplifications, and taking pains to avoid stereotyping.

Again, on behalf of humanity, thanks.

He's just desperate for votes and trying to ensure that Marine Le Pen doesn't take the entire xenophobic vote.

It's pure electioneering and very little else.

    ...other than "ugly".
France's Jews and Muslims united Tuesday to complain they were being used as pawns in a presidential election increasingly dominated by bitter disputes over national identity and ritual slaughter.
"France's problems are so major, as we are in a period of crisis, so how can the issue of kosher meat and halal meat be a major problem for France?" asked an exasperated Grand Rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim.

For its part, the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) slammed what it said was the use of Muslims as "scapegoats" in the election campaign in which halal slaughter of animals has become a hot-button issue.

    He forgot to mention himself?
Sarkozy it's a very french name.
Hope somebody else will be elected.

I guess he's just desperate. Bruni is on the rag, he's in the doghouse, the only woman who pretends to be nice to him is the panzer-like Merkel and Hollande is leading in the polls. A bit of foreigner-bashing is always the last resort of the prick politician who has nothing else to offer. I just hope we don't follow the example of that wizened little leprechaun in Ireland.:):):)

Le Pen probably won't make it. She needs 500 official signatures and is still short.

Everyone is going on about there's "right-wing winds" over Europe. Why is that? People didn't just turn right-wing for no reason.
It could be because of the unprecedented immigration levels, people don't recognise their home towns any more. There is no work and people turn to the easiest explanation, the fordners took the jobs. Of course youtube videos of French immigrant youth attacking police and other citizens doesn't help.

I don't blame the immigrants (that doesn't commit crime) for wanting a better life and moving to wealthy France. I blame the politicians that allowed it to happen too fast.
And what is so surprising is that the immigrants are welcomed by the French left. The left is working class and in direct competition with the immigrants for jobs and resources.
The well educated middle and upper classes aren't worried about their jobs.

Well, that too... but this is Sarkozy you're talking about !!!

He's not the most philosophically-driven president that France has ever had and is not exactly Mr Popularity. He's constantly up to his neck in criticism over slashing cash on personal expenses and also on basically attempting to buy an election, Fianna Fail style through lavishly spending the tax payers' own money.

So, to counteract all this negative press, he'll do anything. You are talking about France's most populist president in a very long time.

Check out these for a bit of a flavour of Sarkozy

He already sent the Hungarian half back to Hungary, which is why he's so short.

It does seem to be a major problem in France. I admire that he is pointing it out but he should do something about it. Cut off immigration. Should do the same in the UK.
