Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese opposition politician and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy.

In 1990, the Burmese military junta called a general election, which the National League for Democracy won by an overwhelming 82% of the votes. Being the NLD's candidate, Aung San Suu Kyi under normal circumstances would have assumed the office of Prime Minister. Instead, the results were nullified, and the military refused to hand over power. This resulted in an international outcry. Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest at her home.

During her arrest, she was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990, and the Nobel Peace Prize the year after. Her sons Alexander and Kim accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf. Aung San Suu Kyi used the Nobel Peace Prize's 1.3 million USD prize money to establish a health and education trust for the Burmese people.

She has been under house arrest for most of her political life - 14 of the past 20 years. She is not allowed any visitors other than her doctor.

Thermobaric Weapon - first pioneered by the Soviet's in Afghanistan and later in Checnya, this weapon works by sucking the air from people's bodies, thereby crushing their bodies, organs and skeletons and incinerating their remains. The picture seen here is of a Thermobaric weapon being used in Afghanistan by British forces.

That pic looks like a bunker buster being tested in a laid out test site, not a thermobaric in Afghanistan. Note the signs and the shape/ layout of the target.

1956 Hungarian Uprising - the Hungarian people rise up against Russian domination of their nation. Seen here are Hungarians on a captured Soviet T-55 MBT. The rising is brutally crushed as the West, for all their posturing, does nothing to aid the people of Hungary.

To think that was only 40 years ago. Being 13 years old, seems like centuries ago. As with the Wars.

Totally agree with you there, my bad and I'm sorry, not intentional. Very few, if any, pictures of Thermobaric weaponry being deployed, but they have been used in Afghanistan by the UK/US.

The bunker/tunnel looks too well built to be in Afghanistan, in that, it's still standing and not collapsing or riddled with bullet holes. I had my suspicions, but thought the Mountains in the background could possibly be Afghanistan. Thinking about it now, could easily be anywhere in Arizona or Nevada in the US.

I think this is the after picture of the first one - http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/images/blu-118b_post-shot.jpg

This picture is not any worse than the Palestinian Man and boy being killed a few pages back. This picture really makes me sick to the core.

This to me symbolises how war has changed in the last 20 years. Not saying by an means war is good - could you imagine Germany, Britain or the US doing this in the Great War or the Second World War.
Or maybe the change is modern media; digital photography can bring it straight to a screen in front of us almost instantuously.

Pete and URL are right. Israelis are brainwashed from a young age re: Palestinians, it's almost manufactured hatred. There is hatred going the opposite way too, but it is justified, can almost be condoned.

Hatred by the Israelis can also be justified if you live in a place that comes under constant rocket and suicide attacks. Justification depends on who you are. That girl there could be born and raised in a town where people are armed all day everyday, where you go to school by armoured convoy etc. She doesn't know the rights and wrongs of the big picture. Murder and terrorism can be understoon by not justified and condoned.

its a bit odd that a communist revolutionary ends up as a capitalist brand.

Very odd. Also the fact that wearing a tshirt with a communist revolutionary is fashionable, wearing a tshirt with a fascist revolutionary's face not quite so cool. I won't understand that.

Right, the link to this pic quite clearly indicates it is a picture of the after effects of the Union Cardbide disaster in Bhopal, India. Nothing to do with Iraq.

When Iraqi troops withdrew from Kuwait at the end of the Persian Gulf War in early 1991, they set fire to more than 600 oil wells. (Don't think this was posted already)

Still a cracking picture, and representative of the kind of precision bombing that the military like to show us when reality is a little messier.

I don't know if this is iconic or not, but it says a lot about the US being the greatest super power... well in Vietnam anyway!

    Vietnam_Conflict.jpg

This is a CH-47A Chinook from the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) being dumped overboard during the final days of the Vietnam War, circa 1975. It is the only known photograph of a Chinook getting dumped into the sea and is a rare shot of a Chinook with the rotor blades folded. Found it here.
