    The colour green does not exist in parts of China.
    Funny enough the colour blue doesn't feature in the New or Old Testament of the bible, or ancient Greek writings and old Japanese texts use the same colour for green and blue. The only ancient civilisation who had a word for "blue" were the Egyptians, probably because they made a small fortune in exporting a dye of that colour. The Greeks described both the ocean and sheep as the colour of wine, honey from bees as green and reported the rainbow as only possessing three or four colours. Slightly more recently before the words pink and orange came along such colours were bundled under "red", hence the robin red breast, who would be the robin orange breast if discovered today.

    The Cape Colony in South Africa was founded, in 1651, by a Dutch administrator named Jan van Riebeeck. A pretty important person in the history of the country, so they naturally put his picture on the money:

    Problem was ... the picture was of someone else, another Dutch guy named Bartholomeus Vermuyden. Oops ... :o

    From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

    Mayday, Mayday has nothing to do with the Bank Holiday. It is the Anglicisation of the French "M'aidez", help me.

    SOS didn't mean "Save Our Souls" as it originated with the German navy and apparently came about because it's the easiest/most clear signal when using morse code.

    This is where this type of thread becomes untrustworthy. That is utter nonsense.

    Genesis 7 says "Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth."

    Binary digits 1 and 0 represent a state and/or voltage. Normally 3.3 volts and above(up to 5) is a 1 and below it is a 0.

    We can represent different patterns by sending different voltages in sequence different points. You can also represent 16 numbers with 4 'bits'.

    8421
    ____
    0000 = 0
    0001 = 1
    0010 = 2
    0100 = 4
    1000 = 8
    1111 = 1+2+4+8 = 15

    This is called digital logic and its how we make sense of electricity!

    I love the diversity of these types of threads. I dislike when random untrue comments are made. It defeats the purpose. Plus I'm more likely to remember the untrue ones, because that's just my luck!

    The word Marmalade comes from Mary, Queen of Scots

    When the queen was ill; the servants would bring her an orange preserve they made that seemed to help with her ailment. They would say “Marie est malade,” this was changed to Mariemalade, and later just pronounced Marmalade

    Post traumatic stress disorder changes the structure of the brain. The amygdala may grow in size. The smallest of things appear threatening. The hippocampus may shrink. Short term memory is converted to long term memory.
    The blood flow in the pre-frontal cortex changes. There may be less blood flowing to the left resulting in less ability for language and memory. Blood flow to the right may increase causing more feelings of sorrow and anger.

    Psychopaths are born. Sociopaths are made.

    Blue tits are lactose intolerant, despite learning to peck the foil lids open on milk bottles, back in the days of glass milk bottle delivery. What they actually want to get at is the cream, which is free of lactose and high in fat. Smart. ;)

    And Newgrange passage tomb was nearly 1000 years old when the Great Pyramid was constructed.
    And that he was killed by being crushed by a chariot .
    It was also a very hasty burial. His embalming was rushed and not very high quality. His tomb wasn't his and the workers had to chip away a corner of a wall and the feet of his sarcophagus to squeeze him in. His famous death mask wasn't meant for him either. It was originally meant for a woman. The ears are pierced which wasn't the fashion for men and the holes were clumsily patched up. It had been robbed quite soon after he was buried, but sealed up again. Periodic floods that affect that area buried the entrance soon after and he was forgotten, a tiny footnote in history. Yet this forgetting meant his tomb weathered the millennia since almost intact and today he's probably the most well known Pharaoh of all.
