The Restaurant Recommendation Thread

There's been a crazy number of threads recently looking for restaurant recommendations, so I'd like to start a specific thread for it. Please post below about your favourite restaurants - why you like them, what price range they are, what type of food they serve, if they have an early bird, opening hours if you know them, where they're located. If you could include a link to the website, that would be great. The more details, the better. This is not a thread to post negative reviews - there's a thread in the main Food & Drink forum for that if you like. Basically, I want this thread to be full of recommendations, not positive and negative reviews. That being said, you can disagree with a recommendation briefly if you really feel the need to, but you must have a really valid reason such as an awful experience, rather than "I don't really like the food" or "It's too expensive".

Called into Marcellos last night in Douglas second time round now and well tis grand. I was a little dissappointed with the main dish. It was suppose to be fillet of beed but it was way to fatty for fillet i could not chew it, soggy overcooked veg..should have said something but I didnt... Id say tis fine for pizza or somehing very basic but thats it i wouldnt be adverturous there..

Shame again with kinda following up after the meal there were two lads there who were good but the ladies working there were pretty, well they werent there for much anyone... We were trying to get their attention for ages to pay and in the end i had to go up, then once we did pay they were all over us...

Tis ok for a pizza and startes

Something doesn't add up here, it is unfair to shame the business with alleged spoiled milk when it could have been something else that caused the sickness.

A dose of the trots an hour after a bit of milk in a hot choc/coffee is a bit much too. Surely it would take longer than that to get thru the system?
Posts on this topic should be deleted if you ask me. Its not fair to the business. A google search of the shop could bring up this post and times are tough enough for places in this city centre.

I obviously missed the post but if it was about spoiled milk in a hot beverage, I imagine that it would have curdled and so it would have been obviously spoiled; the person making it/drinking it would have spotted this/tasted it?

People are entitled to have an opinion on whether they like a restaurant or not but when it comes to accusing a restaurant of food poisoning without any actual proof that it was picked up there, then that's not acceptable I'm afraid. Now, move on please.

Just went to Holy Smoke. It was amazing. Got the BBQ Blow Out for two people. Was basically a platter with everything on it. We were only charged for one person even though the waitress insisted that was the correct price, so in that case it was incredible value. Incredible pulled pork, bone marrow grave with mash, and creamed spinach. Highly recommended.

Not strictly a restaurant, but had a decent evening in 32 Marlboro Bistro (not sure of correct name!)

It's a nice place firstly, especially the snug at the front.

Decent menu, some unusual burgers and variations of your normal bar menu.

Burgers were good, chips and sweet potatoes and the nachos also slightly better than your norm.

Only small quibble was the price of a glass of wine, €7. Maybe that's normal?

completely depends on the type of wine? you could usually pay about 5e for a glass of house which is usually pee.. you would pay more for a decent glass of wine from a bottle - not house.. depending on where its from the year the domain etc.. you could pay anything from 6-9e

Would tend to disagree €7 is nuts for a glass of wine, well for a small glass. If it is nicely filled then ok but for a standard glass tis a bit much house wine or not... Think the Clarion charge the same for the wine and tis a tiny glass, salt are the same...

Any good wine will cost €7 upwards for a glass. House wine should be circa €5.00-5.50 and anything better goes upwards from there.

Unfortunately, here there is no standard for a "glass" measure and everyone hashas their own idea of what constitutes a "glass".

So, saying that €X for a "glass" of wine is cheap /expensive makes no sense when one has no idea of the size of the glass or what the wine is.

€7 could be expensive for a large glass of plonk but be great value for a small glass of fine wine!

I'd agree with this, but I'd say the point the OP was making is that €7 was the starting price for a glass of wine (how big? Not every menu will tell you the size of the measure) and it's nice to have the option of a standard glass for a fiver, because for every person who orders a specific type of wine, there are probably 10 who will order house red or white.

I really like Brick Lane for brunch, some lovely breakfast cocktails on offer too, OH swears by the breakfast pizza though they cut it up a bit funny

The menu in the Lal Quila Douglas has been seriously downsized, I was there at the weekend, very little on offer, not even onion bajis on the starter menu.
There is a separate menu for Rooster Pil Pil, but Ill stick to Ballincollig for that.

Its eating in the bar but the food is lovely and very good value. Its 10 mins from ballincollig and well worth the spin out for a feed.

We were there a few weeks ago and got the exact same order!!Oh loved the burger, I ordered what was to be the "Thai green curry" it was as if they had ordered a Chinese curry and added a ton of sugar to it, absolutely awful:mad:

I'm glad to see that spec being used again. I remember a bar being there when I was in 2nd year in UCC (about 1997/8) and I think it was empty for a long while then?

Was it a bar called Isobar at one stage, possibly 97/98 ish...

It's opened and closed a couple of times since but yes was certainly empty for a long time.

Would love to try Holy Smoke, how busy is it compared to Son of a Bun, would love to go back there too, but turned off a bit by the waiting times as we would have our two year old with us. If we were in Holy Smoke over the weekend at 5:30-6, would we likely be waiting?

Does Holy Smoke have an alcohol license or do you have to walk someplace else for your beers?

They have a license and a small selection of craft beer too, including Fran Well.

Went last night and had the "expensive" plate with 4 different meats and 2 sides, it was so much one portion would easily share between two. It was awesome though, the burnt ends and the ribs were my favorites, the chicken and pulled pork got mostly left behind (gotta prioritise!).

Food was amazing, service was lovely and the only let down was the milkshake which wasn't even half of one of those metal containers they often come in and very runny. But that's ok, that wouldn't be what I'd return for and I will most definitely return.

Yeah sorry if that was misleading. As said above they have a few beers (had a Chieftain IPA myself) but it's nice that you can walk through the arch into the Porterhouse to avail of their range.

Pics look amazing- different types of wood used as well etc., so definitely some serious operators involved :P
