I'm not a protestor but turning around and smashing a middle age behind the ear with a baton, he needs to be prosecuted.

Rte, tv3 and utv all reported on it.

The Irish times, independent, mirror, star, sun, Sunday world etc have all reported on it.

Are you suggesting that because there is not constant media coverage, it should be forgetten about?

Give the householders the 80%discount the vultures are getting or let the state buy them for the 20% and rent them out. Then if that happened there would be no brown envelopes for the golden circle.

As for the 80% discount for the vultures - the protest was at an auction. Any discount rate would not have been made until the auction was closed; the more people bidding, the less the discount. However, the eirigi muppets protesting wanted to stop the auction thereby preventing money going to the taxpayer.

I do suspect that the discounted rate is there to encourage people to by them. There's not exactly a queue of people wanting to move to Wexford so property prices will never be what they once were. I also suspect that you know this but choose to ignore it.

From the sounds of it he was being arrested for failing to give his name following an assault. These matters require a direction from a Superintendent and are generally dealt with by summons.

You may hate this crowd and what they stand for but the man deserves to be judged on his actions, not that of the people he is associated with. Being a Garda is a tough job, granted, but that does not mean that it's members are above the law and can take their frustrations out on members of the public. The man was unjustly and undeservedly beaten with a baton. There can be no excusing that. The Garda was not under threat at time. It was his pushing that caused a situation to go from being reasonably calm, thanks to the other Gardai, to one of chaos where people were falling over and needing to hang off each other. At the very least this man should receive an apology from the state.

Very strong posting from you in this thread, facing down and thoroughly dismantling the 'pro Gardaí no matter what' contingent. Well done.

Fantastic post did you see the video, they had ropes pick axe handles and slash hooks, lucky the female Garda and the young tall black haired Garda were able to keep their composure under such an onslaught. They were responsible Gardaí who followed their training and restored order. They are the people who will regain the respect of the community which is seriously needed.

I'll ask this question for the fourth time. If the old man was such a threat, why didn't the garda also lay into the large man who shoved him back? I would have thought he posed more of a threat.

Surprise surprise, the man originally arrested has been released without charge.

For those of you still struggling to come up with a viable reason as to why the garda lashed out and somehow you're still attempting to justify his unprovoked attacks, particularly those who blamed the arrested guy, does that mean the finger of blame can be pointed back towards the sheriff now, for crying wolf like a 'premiership footballer', as the main instigator of the entire situation?

Or here's another thought - maybe the entire reason the crowd, or members of it, were attempting to talk to the garda was because there was no reason the man should have been arrested in the first place?

And when the garda didn't like what was being said, he resorted to violence?

The only constant I see in every clash in the video, is garda wx152. Is that coincidence?

And before anyone pipes in and says 'the garda should have been allowed to do his job', as you've all pointed out already, that gardai can make mistakes (That's a direct quote, not my opinion, before it's gospel), this 'mistake' definitely contributed to the situation.

Or would you rather suggest that the gardai can do whatever they want, 'because its their job', regardless if it's right or wrong?

Maryanne84, although I've already said I wouldn't be responding to you until you can at the very least, hold a proper discussion / argument / witch hunt which can only be based on opinions based on presented evidence by yourself and not someone else's opinion, I can assure you it's not a witch hunt i'm after, it's an explanation and an apology for what garda wx152 done to my father.

Had the dude just given his details when asked, and allowed the Garda to verify them and make his enquiries, he wouldn't have been arrested.

(a) demand the name and address of any person whom the member suspects, with reasonable cause, has committed, or whom the member finds committing, such an offence, and

(b) arrest without warrant any such person who fails or refuses to give his name and address when demanded, or gives a name or address which the member has reasonable grounds for believing is false or misleading.

Given an assault was alleged, the Garda had to get his details.

I fail to see the relevance as to how someone not stating their details can lead to another, unrelated innocent man getting a beating.
