Dairy Chit Chat- Please read Mod note in post #1

Recently we saw three posters close their accounts over disagreements in the dairy threads. While there is a lot of frustration and discontent with current milk prices and the processing industry, the recent tendency for dairy threads to become tit-for-tat arguments isn’t tolerable for those not involved.

All farming sectors go through difficult periods and during such times there may need to be changes in how threads are moderated.

Dairy threads are going to be more closely monitored and subject to stricter moderation for a while.

To that end we won’t tolerate baiting of posters, constantly reviving old arguments, posters with agendas or crusading for a cause.

Whether it’s discussion of the business or politics of the dairy or other sectors, we expect civility and tolerance toward each other and other opinions as diversity of opinion is needed as a source of different ways of looking at a situation.

Also please be aware that what you may post as light-hearted banter can be read totally differently by someone adversely affected by the subject matter and evoke a reaction you hadn’t intended.

Had to go with a 1st lactation heifer last week that had a mummified fetus, she was in good nick but was no way overdone/fit to kill came into 840 in the factory, fleshy cow's in good nick are worth well over 800 all day long but under - conditioned ladies that have had a hard year are obviously a different story

Sold cows at wkend, they were dried to soak up tho. Big framed hols 850 and a couple small cows with poor feet 450. Could have asked for more but deal a bit with this lad and they all would take a bit of feeding yet

Depends on the cow.

Had one this year milked in the morning . Calved in the evening. Gave the calf frozen beistings and shes milking very well. Not something id recomend though.

Ive asked about them but seemingly none around here or if there is there closed shop .price I got was through Arrabawn coop ,presume they should be able to provide a very competitive price as they would be buying and selling quite a lot .am I allowed ask how far out price I quoted is Stan ....

I'm a member with 10 years and it's open to all. There is a membership fee but, iirc, I save that on liners alone. All stuff delivered to your door next day mostly.

They are the parent company of Magenta Direct as well, they bought them a few years ago.

There very expensive and are way off in price when the tendering is done- just cause they say there a group doesn't mean there a group- they're a supplier at the end of the day

Still cheaper than anywhere local, though, so until I find someone cheaper I'll stick with them.

I buy a fair bit though Magenta, use to price up on Glanbia connect etc before I'd buy, however Glanbia were 99.5% of the time a good bit dearer, even with their regular 20 or 30% off sales. Will have to look at joining Buyrite, I must spend 3/4grand per yr with Magenta now.

Same here with Kerry, the only thing I got cheaper from Kerry was shop soiled and I had to argue a discount for them.

Yep, and mine doesn't charge, they sell the odd few tubes but told us straight out tubes are much cheaper from Glanbia/CAHL etc ha.

21 calved here, 6 heifers incl a set of twins, 14 bulls, 2 half twin heifers to bulls and one mortality. Only 2 heifers out of 11 lwr rest all bulls. Stan must be getting all the heifers

7 out if 22 here also. Poor return. 3 left I'm not too worried as we don't know if we'll be serving any this winter and if we do we still have too many winter milkers

15 fr heifer calves here out of 35 and 8 of those were in calf to angus

Shove them over to Spring gg and just milk ur late March ,April ,May calvers to fill whatever liquid/winter quota u have ????

Talking to guy milking some pure jerseys last night ,thought I'd great solids till I seen his 6.48% fat 4.54 p milking 13 ltrs on 3 kg meal !!!

No may calvers here and v few april calvers next yr. Only 5/80 due in april next yr.
March calvers need to be all all dried up by christmas

Was on farm over weekend all cows get 30-35 day dry. Spring calving 550kgs Ms 6 per ha xbred

Next time you're talking to him will you ask about fertility and empty rate. I'm hearing some horror stories so bad they are hard to believe
