I think in today's society it's unfortunately necessary to have to say "I'm not racist/sexist" etc. before being allowed to offer a valid opinion on an individual and/or group of people.

For example, I could say "that family two doors down are a filthy lot, personal hygiene is not their priority!" ......... now if that family happen to be black then there's (sometimes) pressure to preface the statement with "I'm not racist but ........"

The point being, saying "I'm not sexist/racist but .........." does not automatically make you sexist/racist.

How do you know if someone is homophobic? They'll usually make it quite clear with time depending on the topic of conversation.

I would think the opposite. If you just told me that the family was a filthy lot I would just think that they were a filthy lot. Race wouldnt come into it unless the person saying it had a habit of claiming that black people were filthy often.

If you start with "'I'm not racists but.." my notice would be brought to their race and that you felt it was important to the matter of them being filthy.

Nah I'm still scared for life from the Yes Zealots hounding one around the street if you do not immediately say "I'm voting yes" or them assuming "That's My business " to mean you are a homophobe and called out on ones views. You know them Yes lot being psychic and all that.

Sure why would I be butt-hurt? I live in a country which already had legislated for SSM before Ireland, and when I say legislated I mean politicians got their fingers out instead of relying on a popularity contest referendum to justify it.

Nope My experience would be the other way around that you are calling them Dirty because they are Black. You would never have a problem if it was a white couple you were talking about no need to explain the whole I'm not Racist part.

It's the least the citizens of Ireland can do to honor him. He gained world wide attention for the cause of gay rights in Ireland. He's done this country a great service, and the innocent people who were shackled in this country for years. Future generations are in his debt.

I think we should just have all the Homosexuals and Homophobes battle it out on live TV on some remote island with a 'kill or be killed' rule, would make for some fantastic entertainment. Breda O'Brien and David Quinn in one corner cannonballing flaming copies of the Irish Catholic with a ballista, with Panti and Colm O'Gorman in the other corner flinging razor sharp Yes badges back, Youth Defence leading a cavalry charge against the alliance of Uni societies and David Norris' squadron of minions. Would be glorious, and just picture the fabulous outfits both sides could don. I say we start a kickstarter to have this happen.

Phobia is not hatred of something.
Phobia only means fear* - you can then build upon that to join in hatred to dilute the expression and inflate it to fit your view.

Phobia is a medical expression, people keep using medical expression to inflate the meaning over their own diluted issues.
Depression, phobia, retarded. One day people will have killed off the original meaning of every word.

*Actually a lot of phobias are not irrational at all.
Vertigo, Claustrophobia, Arachnophobia etc are all pretty sensible phobias with a biological background that makes total sense.

Neither do I But having moved to Ireland from Abroad, My experience talking to the general PC population here is not a good one.

My point is, we are now so hyper-sensitive that we almost have to clarify we are not racist before offering an opinion ....... there's a fear there that if I said to you (or anybody) that "that" family are a filthy lot that you (or society in general) could perceive my statement as a racist comment purely because the family happen to be black ........ now you personally may not make that assumption but there is a genuine (and valid) fear there that if you say anything negative about an individual who happens to be a minority (gay/black etc.) then you could be accused of being racist/sexist ......... quite often by the individual themselves even though there may be no connection between said statement and the individual's sexuality or race.

This has resulted in people quite often clarifying that they are not racist or sexist before offering their opinion of someone ......... sadly though even the act of clarifying that you are not racist or sexist can/does result in you being accused of being racist/sexist ......... proved, in fact, by your very own post.

So the homophobic people are now in the minority and should have their rights protected.

I honestly think the aggression and intolerance of many on the Yes side alienated a lot of potential Yes voters and pushed them into apathy or even the No side. I was firmly in the Yes camp at first. Seeing how the Yes side were demonising and savaging people very nearly made me vote No out of spite or abstain out of exasperation.

I still voted Yes, despite the best efforts of the Yes campaign.

The amount of people who are in denial about their sexuality is the last taboo, the fear for some people to be what they are is very real.

It was ironic that many were prejudiced in thinking that anybody voting no was homophobic. I would have preferred if the referendum had gone back to square one and asked if any marriage should be recognised by the state at all.

I do not think people in childless marriages should be afforded the same financial benefits, which were mainly set in place on the presumption of their being children involved. 2 platonic friends cannot get the same benefits, I don't see why the fact that a couple are allegedly having sex and signed some paper should make a difference.
