Even though for example Git doesnt agree with the mistaken shooting of Ado, he boldly fronts Nidge out when confronted and gets him to patsy to his demands but Git didnt count on Tommy and Darren and Nidge's inability to keep them in line. Over time i suppose the whole vicious gang leader thing becomes a self fulfilling prophecy for Nidge. Just like Darren, he becomes sucked deeper and deeper into the dark side. Nidge pissing on the cops milk might suggest he is becoming more boisterous and bould this season and that he is beginning to believe in his own luck. He'll be aware of who is his enemies and deal with all of them...except one who will come up and catch him on the blindside. I do think though that Nidge's will do whatever it takes to protect the family being harmed. Regardless of whether Siobhan works against him with the Gardai or not, i think he wont want to see her being harmed and might be willing to do the time in order to save her if it comes down to it. If Paulie becomes a threat to Siobhan, i think Nidge will do whats necessary to save her. It might be his ultimate downfall though. As for Fran, i reckon Peter and Judas (Deano and Carlo) will inevitably betray him.

In early seasons, gang boss John Boy was quickly becoming a liability with his obsessions about his dead brother's ghost and his OTT war with Fran the man. Nidge took over determined to pursue a more moderate line .. until, the CIRA came on the scene. First off, Nidge had to control an angry Darren seeking revenge on an accidental knee-capping of Ado. Darren went to throw a pipebomb at their car even. If that was not bad enough, IRA man Git raped Siobhan and Darren/Tommy violently killed him (against Nidge's wishes).
BuilderPlumber wrote: » Nidge was then set on a course of paranoia and mistrust due to repercussions of the actions of his friends. The IRA are after him and splits in the gang ranks start to show. By the end of season 3, Nidge was as paranoid as John Boy and the pressure was extreme: poor Tommy gets the brunt of it! But pragmatic and resourceful Nidge surfaces in he seeing he could go over Dano's (Git's son who is out for total revenge once he cops on Nidge's gang killed Git) head to do a deal with Tony. Part of that deal was to have Darren killed. Nidge did not feel good about it but he had to do it. He organised Ado and Elmo to do it but it backfired with Lizzie instead clipping Darren. By season 4, Nidge is a man who is dogged by guilt, depression, lack of confidence and paranoia. Darren, Tommy, the continued Dano threat and then the Fran/Linda thing coming back all haunt him. But again we see the pragmatic and resourceful Nidge: another deal with Tony that gets rid of Dano once and for all, his partnership with the dentist who he sees as useful, his ability to talk Fran out of killing Tommy. Will season 5 show us a different Nidge? I think so. From what has been said, he has got over his depression/paranoia of seasons 3/4 and has to reassert himself again. But his enemies remain: the new guys from Spain, Fran (perhaps), and Siobhan (I have a feeling from the clip that Siobhan could be in grave danger). Nidge could mount pre-emptive strikes on many he perceives as enemies: like he did with Wayne (successfully) and Paddy Pipebomb (not successfully).

Nidge is very much the Terry Clark figure (for those who have seen Underbelly S2 and are aware of the whole Mr Asia story). He is very measured and controlled and is able to compartmentalise anything that happens to him once its in his own interests.

As the show has gone on, it has become darker - all of the characters have aged and evolved from small to big "fish" as criminal gangs are generally described. For instance, I won't ruin any of season 4 for you but having seen it myself before the rest, I was astonished to see Nidge crying over Darren. Season 4 Nidge wouldn't shed a tear for anyone except perhaps Warren. Darren became more and more hardened as the first three seasons went on. I felt that was made fairly clear, as he showed less and less hesitation in killing people from one murder to the next - I don't think there's any way season one Darren would have killed Luke for instance, but when it happened his attitude was more "Has to be done, sure f*ck it".

BWT, not seen the season 4 yet so no spoilers please
