How do they plan on doing that? I doubt meters are fitted with devices that allow supplies to be cut off remotely! I suppose he means they'll send 4 fellas round in a van to do it.. probably costing 100 times more than what people haven't paid.

There's allowances being made for people who can't afford to pay. However, a lot of people who "can't afford it" pretty much can. You'll have your basic human right of a fair usage limit.

He did say they would consider payment plans for these cases. I'm not defending it btw, but obviously there has to be a penalty. I wouldn't pay any of my utility bills if the service would be still be provided.

So..as was originally touted by fg...you get your fair usage limit for free (no standing charge), and then once you go over this limit you start being charged. Am I correct?

I remember late 90's in Australia if you abused the water system, someone showed up and fitted the equivalent of a penny washer restricter or trickle valve at your meter.

I know in the UK the water companies cant turn off or reduce water for non payers by law.

I think it has something to do with a fundamental human right to water.

Can't see how they could impose it here tbh.

Its Hogans comments that hurts me more than anything. I am sure he wont be effected by any of these charges. Pity he doesnt **** off to his Portuguese villa on a permanent basis.

I believe that's the current intention yeah. The standing charges were unfair, and contrary to any positive environmental principles upon which this tax was based.

If you don't pay your TV Licence they don't take Fair City or the LLS away (sadly). If you don't pay road tax they don't put extra potholes just on your bit of road.

Reducing water supplies to a trickle has possible health issues - if you don't pay they should sue you or anyone with a job a garnishee order.

You can be imprisoned if you refuse to pay for a TV license - over 400 were either this year or last year. I was half listening to the radio in the car, so don't have exact details.

You receive fines for not paying motor tax, and your car can be impounded if it's more than 2 months out of date.

Basic requirement 140,000 ltrs. Phil Hogans idea of "fair usage limit" 30,000 ltrs. Seems he's saying, "We'll give you your basic human right to clean water, but you'll pay for it in cold, hard cash".
