Ideal place to setup camp in a zombie apocalypse?

I was discussing The Walking Dead with my mates at the weekemd over a couple of beers, for those who have never seen it you should have a good hard look at yourself because Its a great tv series about a zombie apocalypse & the survival of the human race.

Anyway we were talking about where you would want to setup camp in the unlkely event of a zombie apocalypse. I said i would hold myself up in a supermarket, maybe a Tesco. It wouldnt be Aldi or Lidl anyway..who wants to be living off cheaply branded rich tea biscuits or wearing a fake rugby world cup jacket for the rest of your days. Nah i want that McVities sh!t & a decent knitted jumper. Plus a lot of Tescos have a Tech/entertainment departments so your going to be able to hook up that PS4, play video games & watch countless dvds while the zombies are outside muching on everyone in sight. Id let people in but id probably be too busy playing GTA IV to be honest. I cant think of any downsides to living in Tesco, id probably live there now if i could.

Overall I think Europe would be a much better place to deal with a zombie apocalypse than America simply because European countries have had a long history of needing to deal with invading people they would like to keep out. Therefore most European countries have good defensive buildings and infrastructures, like castles, motte and baileys, round towers etc, which America has never had. Defensive buildings are paramount in such an event.

Survivors in Ireland would do quite well I think in a zombie apocalypse in my opinion. As an Island we are isolated which works. Low risk of natural disasters such as extreme weather events, earthquakes etc which could potentially damage any survivor stronghold that is built. A lack of dangerous animals for the most part. Some good defensive buildings dotted around the country, good land for living off when resources do become scarce, low enough population and population density that massive swarms of zombies should be less of a problem compared to the UK for example. Another prime location for a survivor strong hold would be somewhere like the Isle of Man I think, presuming of course you could be self sustaining.

A good sized yacht, near enough to a distribution centre like the Tesco one on Dublins Northside, plenty of jerry cans to fuel the motor boat from the furthest safe reaches of the harbour to shore, and fishing nets. Perhaps a water purification system. Also enough books to stop your brain from rotting, even if it's not going to be eaten.

Or sail your yacht to an island with agricultural potential and enough distance from shore to keep the undead at bay.

The trouble with castles is you can get trapped in them. It's always been the problem with fortified buildings and zombies can hold a siege for a lot longer than people would.

Our land wouldn't be great for growing, our farmers have missed seasons due to poor weather (more than bad weather). We would have trouble growing everything we need without artificial grow houses.

I think swarms could be more of a problem. If Dublin gets over run that's the best part of a million zombies with only one direction to go, back in land. As you've already pointed out Ireland is small so it's easier for them to traverse the country and we have few major natural barriers to stop them. For the most part you only have 10 miles between Irish towns so the swarm could move from town to town converting those that don't flee into the crosshairs of frightened mucksavages.

I think it would be unlikely (islands too small to be all that self sufficient) and again the biggest hurdle will be the locals that don't want to let some possibly infected blow in use up some of their resources.

If you had a decently sized castle and a small group of people you could probably grow enough crops and keep a few animals inside the fortress. If you're trapped inside then everything else is trapped outside.

Some castles have exterior walls left which may give you enough room for some vertical gardens. Without vertical gardens you'd have trouble getting light to the crops behind walls. You'll also need a water source.
