TBH there are very few nice apartments in Limerick. Even the houses for rent arent great, even though they are new.

The Dutch way to solve it would be to break into your own residence, change the locks and send the landlord the bill.

Not sure about Ireland, but in the Netherlands the landlord cannot enter your property or evict you from it without serving notice within the proper guidelines.

I hate comments like this - people that have mortgages can be so smug, it really annoys me.

I earn good enough money, have no bad debts, but I don't have the means to come up with a 15/20k for a deposit on a house and I doubt the bank would give me a mortgage anyway.
So I have no choice but to rent.

Also, I know plenty of people who have paid 400k (with a 100% mortgage) for a house that's now valued at nearly half this amount.
They might own it one day but must be a kick in the teeth to be paying that mortgage.
At least with renting I can up and leave when I want and if anything breaks it gets fixed with no expense to me

I doubt I'll ever buy a house, I'm happy the way I am.

Sounds very dodgy OP. Years ago when Mr P and I were first living together we rented from a landlord who wanted cash only. My husband was working permanent nightshifts in those days and he woke up one day to find the landlord in the bedroom looking at him:eek:

Hope your husband punched his lights out. Surely that is criminal trespass on the part of the landlord.

He was an oul fella so no, he didn't hit him but he went ballistic, we moved out shortly after that, my husband was just angry that it could have been me in bed, he should have been at work that day, but he was on holiday. If a landlord wants access to a property they have to give at least 24 hours notice and have an agreed time to call. They can't just show up and let themselves in.

That's more to do with the general lax laws around renting in Ireland (for both tenants and landlords). Really needs the law tightened up and enforceable for renting to become more viable to people.

Was living in this kip in rathgar years ago, lovely Georgian house divided into about 10 flats. Ours was the basement one and woke one morning to find the landlord dragging trees trough our flat to dump them out the back. Had only started college in those days so didn't sy anything but if it happened now I'd lose the plot. He left bits of branches lying on the kitchen floor when he was finished too.
