Needs front break pad and a little TLC other than that it's driving perfect

Saab Ed wrote: » Dgt, I have a question for you. I had one of those 2.1 Xantias years ago. It was a 98 if memory serves me, must have been the last of them cause there was no key pad. Anyway (and sorry for going off topic here) it used to have a mental problem. It would run fine for hours, maybe days and even weeks some times. Then out of the blue the revs would start to randomly fluctuate between 800 - 14/1600. You be sitting there at traffic lights in neutral then suddenly the engine would start revving up and down. Turning it off usually fixed it, but not always. Any ideas what this was Dgt, I never got to the bottom of it. On the car itself, well I'd have to agree, a 1.9 turbo was a superior car except for in one place, the 2.1s legs. A 1.9 would out accelerate the 2.1 but the 2.1 was like the Duracell Bunny, keep your boot down and it just went on and on and on.

dgt wrote: » I had a 97 Xantia with no keypad too! Maybe it depended on the spec/market/how PSA were feeling at the time Having trawled through many's a scrapyard on the hunt for various parts, any 2.1 I encountered almost always had it's ecu and pump missing. I couldn't understand why and asked about. I found out later ecu's were riddled with bugs, seems to be a common problem with the lucas pump, haven't heard much bother in the pre 97 ecu (commonly used for bosch ve conversions for veg oil/reliability etc). That's the only answer I can give for the idling issue, an early ecu might have solved it Yep a standard 1.9 wouldn't stand a chance against a 2.1, it's a plodder in standard form, it was slightly better pre 98 with the older turbos but the 2.1 would still accelerate at high speeds where the 1.9 would stagger. Thank test driving loads for finding that out! It'd be rude not to put up an XUD engined car at this stage....NCT till Aug, 850
