When I was very young and started boxing I was encouraged to fight in a southpaw stance as often as I did in an orthodox stance, same thing carried over when I started to practise martial arts at the start of the 1990's. but most tend to fight out of one stance or the other, and if you took the average amatuer fighter who has fought and trained in an orthodox stance for the past ten years and told him that he was to fight his next fight in a southpaw stance then he would most likely find himself in a bit of bother. Basically my point is that a person who is taught and trained to compete in a number of positions or stances will stand a better chance of being adaptable to change of position/stance in a competitive enviroment than the guy who has spent most of his time since he was young training/competing in the one position/stance.
