Clare GAA discussion thread

Thought I'd start this thread as haven't found one of the same.

So, 2010.. new decade... new beginnings? With the aim of the League being to get back into Division 1, could Clare also achieve success in Munster this year?

As well as a proposed friendly versus Cork, Ger O'Loughlin has a good load of matches to blood players from U-21's into the senior game. With the opponents in the League not posing a major threat some would argue Clare wont get as much preparation as Div 1 teams, but maybe it will give them an opportunity to focus on their strength and conditioning?

So, Clare face Waterford on Sunday at 2pm in Ballyduff Upper.. I think they should win against this weakened Waterford side, but I think it will be close tbh. But could Waterford topple us in the pre season tournament?

Up until last year he played most of his hurling in the forwards for Tulla afaik, although I am open to correction on that.

Maloney and O'Connor must take massive credit for having the vision and know how of making a full back out of him.

Similarly this year, there was a gaping hole at center back for the 21's and they have done their best to make O'Neill a number 6. Whether it is a success or not remains to be seen but O'Neill does have the physical attributes required.

I admire Maloney and O'Connor for getting the most out of lads and to be able to find good solutions for obvious problems. It is not something that you will see Fitzy doing. McInerneys development into an intercounty fullback will take a bit of time but he is doing well so far.

An eye injury. Took a sliothar to his helmet and bent a spur near his eye. Davy's calling him 50-50 to play.

Any idea when teams for both counties are released, anyone?

Ah right from the u21 game. Woudln't pay much attention to what Davy says, or to what team he announces for that matter. Nor would I pay heed to the lineup Cunningham releases either!

Anyione know what kind of helmet Kelly had for interest sake?

Old style cooper is what it looks like. He was taken to hospital after the game as a precaution but travelled home with the team which is a good sign. Honan is the other doubt, knee problem.

Either would be a big loss. I was told earlier that Kelly had actualy removed a couple of the bars in his helmet, presumably for increased vision. maybe they got damaged in that process. Either way, I'm fairly sure they don't seel Cooper helmets in the shops anymore. Only three helmet makers were initially covered under the GAA's new helemt standard, Marc, Mycro and Azzurri. The latter changed their helmet style from the old style whic resembled Cooper's.

I know this is a lot off topic, but I've been fascinated to see the fall out of an injury involving a Cooper helmet since those rules came in. There must be insurance implications if what I have said is still correct, and therefore it's amazing that players are allowed wear Cooper helmets.

For a young lad, I think McInerney has done well. He is not there physically yet, but that will come. I do think he has room for improvement under the high ball and if Canning was on him it would be a worry at this stage of his development. Althought I think Dillon will be given the job of man marking Canning.

i cant see any problem with mcinerney at full back he has had a fine season so far along with o donovan i wouldnt like to see the backline broken up, fair enough he may have got caught for the goal in the last min agenst wexford but he did manage to keep the top scorer in the country down to just two points from play up to that point,

our problems lie further up the field colin ryans wide's count from play would be a start, not trying to make a scape goat out of anyone at the same time,

I don't know was it a one off ploy, but the team he named for the LF was exactly how they started.
To the positions and all.

This was baffling as James Regan was down for midfield having never played there, seemed like he was going to be swapped into the forwards(where he hasn't done well in the past) along with a few other positional changes and another one or two possible first 15 changes.

Might have just been a one off though.

Starting Niall Burke at corner forward was another odd one I thought. Not really fast enough for there and then losing someone that's decent under a puck out for the half forward line.

Spoke with 1 of the players this evening, Tony Kelly is going to be playing and thankfully he won't be taking the 21s anymore. There are some interesting tactics going to be deployed as well, they sound like a good idea though (don't want to say here).

Good to see Kelly is ok, an eye injury is always a worry. I'd be worried about Jonathon Glynn's ability in the air if he's on Pat O' Connor.

Are our new tactics a breakaway from the revolution. Maybe everything up to now was just lolling the opposition into a false sense of security, we're going long ball

no cathal mcinerney which is a pity davey must think it would be too much of a chance to take...

good to see duck back he was missed agenst wexford, i still think david mcinerney will make his name tomorrow agenst joe canning he is underrated as it is.........

I notice Loughnane in The Star yesterday says there are "unrealistic expectations" in the county about the current team and how much it can achieve, apparently the spine of the defence is still weak and lacks strong leadership.

Is it that unrealistic that Clare could beat Galway and Dublin/Limerick to reach the All-Ireland final? I think not. Some people want to play it down there it is uncharted territory for this young team, but the team definitely has the talent. I can't argue that the defence can be weak, but every other team is riddled with flaws this year too...even Kilkenny.

Cathal Mcs grandfather died Friday, so it's probably because of that.

Cathal did more than enough against Wexford to justify a start today.
