There's nowhere to discuss the Championship in general and maybe the games without the interest to have a thread of their own.

Cavan playing very well to start the year off. Lovely foot passing, nice scores and tough tight defence.

Really enjoying the game I have to say.

Armagh need to sort themselves out. Some seriously aimless play.Bringing on a clearly unfit Brendan Donaghy proves how desperate they are.

thats why the season ticket program was introduced to give prefrence to the regular suporter

i cant say too much about dublin i expect the same to happen when i go to thurles tomorrow, there were hardly 3000 clare suporters at the last game agenst wexford i expect that figure to double if not tribble ,

i know people dont have money but it is anoying when you travel around the country all year when no one else is and end up with bad tickets or no ticket at all!!

I really don't see why not. Dublin used to sell out Croker with one match, tough times and all that, but Tyrone and Monaghan would half fill it on their own.

Cavan would easily bring 20/25,000 and Donegal and Mayo 20,000 each easily as it's a rerun of an AI final.

Anyway,
Dublin v. Cork. I think it's the worst draw for Cork, Dublin are well able to take on Cork in an open, man for man style match, for all that means in the modern game.

Kerry v. Cavan. Cavan will make it difficult but just too much talent and experience in Kerry for me. Wouldn't be surprised if Cavan really put it up to them.

Monaghan v. Tyrone. Based on more gut feeling than anything. I just haven't been that impressed by Tyrone, yes, they came through 2 tough tests against Meath and Kildare and looked very impressive at times, I just can't see Cavanagh being as influential. Could be a draw but I just fancy Monaghan.

Donegal v. Mayo. Going on bias and gut feeling again. Yep, Donegal have looked tired and out of ideas at times, but you have to balance that against a Mayo team that had no test in Connacht, Donegal had 3 stern tests in Ulster, albeit failing 1, and Laois who ran Dublin close last year, in the qualifiers. Mayo go in as the bookie favourites and with all the hype, the opposite to last year. I think Donegal will sneak it but that may be as far as they go this Summer. Gallagher is back and MotM for me against Laois, never watched him play as well for Donegal.

Anyone know if the BBC are showing any of the games involving Ulster teams? I would've thought they might show Monaghan - Tyrone given it's a big all-Ulster clash. They've shown Croke Park games involving Ulster counties in the past.

Well I assume RTE will be taking the obvious one.

Then TV3 would take maybe Dublin v Cork for viewing figures so the can roll out all their adverts.

Then which other game would they go for? Both Monaghan and Cavan would gather interest. I'd say they'll pick Cavan and Kerry. That way there is one on each channel each day.

Tv3 would love the Sunday double header but I assume RTEs first pick will put end to that.

i am not sure if they show live games beyond the ulster championship probley deferd highlights

They usually show the Ulster champion matches and the AI if an Ulster team is in it. I don't think anything is particularly set after the Ulster Championship. I'd imagine they'd really want to show Tyrone v. Monaghan out of the Q/F's.

Yeah that was what I was thinking, a game between the Ulster champions and a big Ulster team like Tyrone is one I'm sure they'd want to show, if they were showing any. It'd certainly be welcome if the alternative is TV3!

Dublin V Cork: Poor old Cork, they got the team that nobody wanted. As a Kildare man it pains me to say this but this current Dublin side is very special and I'd be shocked if they're not lifting Sam in September. They have arguably the best front 6 in the country and let's not forget they still have Alan Brogan to come back plus McMenimin, Cullen and O'Gara in reserve. They've introduced some new players this year and you'd think they've being playing Senior Inter-county all their lives.

I don't give Cork a chance, they lack forward power and also Conor Counihan is not a good manager. They were very fortunate to beat a pretty average Galway side today and I think they will bow out with a whimper next Saturday evening.

Dublin by 8.

Kerry V Cavan: This could be a banana skin for Kerry as they have not played a competitive game for four weeks all the while Cavan have been building up a nice bit of momentum. Cavan by all accounts were very lethargic against London today but I would'nt read much into that game as they knew as well as everyone else that it would be a non-event. Having said all that I think Kerry will have too much fire power up front and with Colm Cooper thriving in his new centre forward position the Cavan backs will be under serious pressure.

Monaghan V Tyrone: This is a very hard game to call. Monaghan were fantastic in the Ulster Final but the question is can they repeat it? I have my doubts. Tyrone have beaten Kildare and Meath recently so there's no doubt they are a battled hardened team. Stephen O'Neill has been quiet of late by his standards but he will relish this game and with Seán Cavanagh in flying form I'll give a hesitant vote to Mickey's men.

Tyrone by 2.

Mayo V Donegal: Game of the weekend? I think so. Donegal have flattered to deceive this year while Mayo have swept all before them. Donegal's forwards have been unimpressive this year namely Murphy and McFadden but maybe that will change once they hit Croker. I haven't a clue who is going to win this game.

The greatest atmosphere Ive ever experienced in Croker...It started at the parades and never let up. Physically wrecked after the game..losing didn't help!

That game today could be the making of them.

If they find any kind of rhythm they've the talent to play with anyone, even though they've looked off-kilter for the last couple of seasons.

Actually think Dublin will suit them/they match up well with them: certainly don't think it'll be remotely easy for Dublin and wouldn't be at all surprised if Cork beat them.

galway would have beating cork today but for a bit of inexpeirence in not killing the game off when 6 points up, that and there fitness let them down .......something that wont affect dublin the next day!!

Yep and i think more importantly a plan the players believe in. They're just not playing for Counihan anymore.

They may or may not still be playing for Counihan.
But they're definitely still playing for something/someone/themselves/the Jersey.
Would've been very easy for them to fold today if they were a completely dispirited team who simply wanted rid of Counihan.
The fact is that both today and even against Kerry, though they left it too late, they dug in and wanted to win.

The conspiracys on this site are just comical. It might have something to do with tv3 screening the game. You could have the game in thurles or even Pairc Ui Chaoimh and still the cork supporters wouldn't turn up. Really interesting day of football today... lots to mull over.

London put up a good fight against Cavan for long periods, missing that goal just before the Cavan goal really killed them. Cavan probably would have won anyway, but the margin probably should have been less. Bit of a blip for Cavan? They've been very impressive this year, expect them to raise their game against Kerry.

Cork were lucky against Galway... I dunno about them. In fairness to Galway, had a lot of doubts about them but they seemed to actually perform in the last 2 games. Can't see Cork going much further, they have some hugely talented players but they seem very disjointed.

Donegal-Laois didn't sound like a great game.... Donegal did enough though. Probably need to raise their game a lot for the next day.

I thought Tyrone-Meath was very enjoyable, and Tyrone deserved their win in the end. Maybe got a few soft frees...but Sean Cavanagh was absolutely immense, he really is pure class. Thought the likes of O'Neill and McCurry were good when they got on the ball, and Harte was pretty influential too.
Wallace and Newman were effective for Meath, but they just couldn't get the same scores from play. Cavanagh's foul at the end was very very cynical but.....it's one that anyone's team would be glad to have made tbqh.

As for the quarters...some interesting ties. Can't see Cork having enough to match Dublin, they're just not playing well enough currently. Similarly, Cavan will fight very hard but I expect Kerry to edge it.

The other two are interesting, Monaghan were very impressive against Donegal, can they play like that again? If so, they won't fear anyone....but Tyrone won't be scared of them either. Very hard to call, I think Monaghan might do it. And unless Donegal improve massively (which they might well do), I think Mayo will beat them. Probably better for Mayo to play them now, before they can build up more momentum.....Donegal this year seem a bit like Dublin last year, not really hit the heights last year, when they met a top team, they were out. Donegal have had a bit more time to adjust, we'll see if they can revive last years levels of intensity,

Kerry might struggle here, I can't see them not getting over the line, either that or they will be great and will become the favourite overnight.
Monaghan vs Tyrone
Monaghan by 3, I think that from what I've seen of Tyrone if Sean Kavanagh is marked well then they are average. I think monaghan have the tools to do that.
Donegal vs Mayo
Mayo by 7
I have a feeling that Mayo will have too much for Donegal. Huge mental damage has been shipped by Donegal at this stage, and Mayo could do a serious job on them if they bring their sharp hungry A game.

Went up to Carrick on Shannon tonight expecting to be hammered. Instead what I seen was a shadow of a Donegal team who were there for the taking. I suppose I putting my head on the block and saying they will not win next week. ( I can see them winning by 10 now). Just no fluidity to them if this was the Donegal of last year Laois would of been sent packing instead I think Laois's lack of belief cost them (not sure what belief is) just there were plenty of chances for us and we chose not to take them. I am pretty sure Donegal are suffering from All Ireland blues but I thought JMCG was going to be in the Micko Dwyer class and manage back to backs. Really don't see this happening now take the 4/6 Mayo

the aura is gone because we have been a shadow of last years team. Havnt said this in the McGuinness era but it depends which Donegal shows up... If we play like we have so far this year mayo easy. If we can rediscover last years form we can sneak a hell of a battle.
Right now I say mayo, im not convinced they have it in them, especially when its their third game in 3 weeks

I think most fans worry about what team shows up. But the cracks in McGuinness system have been exposed by other teams, in McGuinness two losses in the championship his style of play struggles to come from behind IMHO. A lot of the talk about Donegal being relentless and unstoppable is now gone forever, every team will look at them and say if we get out ahead you may struggle to catch us, we are not that worried about your plan B, and you have been beaten twice, Murphy and McFadden can be marked out of a game completely
They are serious issues for Donegal because their players and the opposition were affected by all the physiological aspects of the game more than any other set up I've ever known.
