Saorview "No Channels Found"

Hi all,
I have a TV Star T1020 box with an aerial on my roof in a rural location. I am within 23km of one transmitter and 28km of another but I have no channels. It's no better with an indoor aerial (the exact problem is no channels found). Although the names of the channels are picked up, there is no picture or sound. Is there any remedy for this issue?

Did you previously view the analogue versions of the 4 Irish channels with this aerial setup?

If you could post a pic of the aerial, it might help clear things up.

Previously we only received TV3 through the aerial (my Dad said he has a VHF for RTE). We picked up TV3 fine. We bought a new aerial (I don't have a picture right now, but this is the exact one: http://www.tvtrade.ie/yellow-group-b-uhf-aerial.html) for Saorview and no joy. We then retried the old TV3 aerial and still no joy.
We now have the tv trade.ie bought aerial up on the roof.

you could take the box to someone who has functioning saorview and test if the box is faulty.
also check the saorview website and check on the map to make sure you can get saorview.

Hi, The box is fine. We checked.
There is another issue: our neighbour has trees that are substantially high. They are blocking the line of sight from our aerial to transmitter. Would this affect it?

Are you having this problem in Kildare?

Was the new aerial bought before digital switchover last October? Maybe for the Mt. Leinster transmitter when it was broacasting Saorview in a different frequency group to the UHF analogue channels?

This is in Tipperary. And the aerial was bought a month ago.

and yes trees may block it but as you got tv3 it should be ok. i#d say its on the wrong country.

The transmitters I am near are 'Kilduff' and 'Cahir'.

Yes. That is the exact aerial, Yellow Tip Group B, that we have.

Which transmitter is recommended by the coverage checker (link above)? Kilduff mux. 1 is just within the overlap of group B & C/D. Cahir is a low powered site covering a small area.

Neither of those transmitters carried analogue TV3, so I assume you were receiving it from Mt Leinster previously. Maybe a new UHF Group A aerial pointing at the high power (160kW) Mt Leinster transmitter might work?

Kilduff (25kW) and Cahir (0.06kW) transmitters are lower power.

There's always the possibility that you just didn't connect cables properly etc. Did the original 'TV3' aerial not get Saorview at all?

It didn't. But I'll try again.

What group was the old aerial?

A wideband aerial will cover the full range of UHF frequencies but with lower gain at the lower frequencies, where the Mt Leinster Saorview mux is located, than a specific Group A aerial.

Has your dad been without tv since 24th October last? (Irish channels anyway.)

The "TV3" aerial would have gotten TG4 as well btw, unless TV3 was being carried by some local self-help or "deflector" system.

I'll have to double check if the old UHF aerial picked up TG4.
But we did have channels since October but we always relied on Sky previously.

OP, try a full scan again. Are there any splitters or amps between the aerial and your TV?

Issue resolved.
It was the aerial. We got a wideband UHF aerial, tried it and bob's your uncle!

I'm surprised the group B aerial didn't work for Kilduff, even if it was down a bit on gain at that frequency compared to whatever wideband you have.
