I've seen early (03-04) e60 petrols going for 3 grand so it wont be very long before they are bangernomic territory!

3k will get you a fairly knackered one. I'd say at least a full year from now until the first E60 bangernomics (with NCT and without issues) or I'll eat my hat...

Although I agree. Actual e60 examples will be "bangernomicable" soon, i would say 12-18 months too

considering the more complicated computer coding, model launch issues and cost of some parts , Id probably avoid 03-04 e60's in the same way Its a good idea to avoid 02-03 e65 7 series. Just because somethings cheap doesn't make it a bargain.

Price is good, but what kind of project it was to work on Primera?
New clutch and full service is worth more than 300 euro, so what was the point of the "project"?

are they the rovers with the honda engine or is it one of the less reliable rover ones?

i suppose styling is a matter of opinion but i personally think most of the range of "Z" series cars were quite handsome.

its a rover with the K-series engine. not half as unreliable as bar stools would have you believe. aside from the dreaded head gasket, they are actually a really good go-er, we had one in the family for years, rarely gave any trouble.

i don't think any rover has had a honda engine for nearly 20 years now.

It's registered in the wrong country. It has no tax or test (that are relevant here)

These have the far less reliable rover k series units, in fact no 45/ZS had a Honda engine.

The earlier 1.6 Rover 400 with an auto box did. I think it was the last Rover to have a Honda engine but am happy to stand corrected

The k-series engine was an excellent engine in its day. Don't believe all the pub talk from people who haven't got a clue

Very light weight, easy revving but yes, if something went wrong cooling the engine the head gasket would fail and there would be trouble.

Yes you are correct they had a d series Honda 1.6 sohc. I however never mentioned a 400 series though. The rover 45 never had a Honda engine even in auto form and neither did the mg zs.

I never said the 45/ZS did either

I was just saying the 400 was the last to have one.

Still makes me chuckle though when its included in an ad that the the 75/45/25 etc have the Honda or BMW engine

My comment was based on first hand experience with these engines and not what's been said down the pub

.

On paper they are an excellent engine and when working correctly are a nice engine to use, however they are soft and very fragile andeven the best maintained engine can and do suffer from things like premature hg failure(not just due to a poor cooling system but also because of a poorly designed and manufactured block and the long bolts setup).

A modified headgasket can however be got along with a few other modified parts to prevent this but this modification at best will only postpone the inevitable.

These engines can also suffer from dropped liners, premature and frequent starter motor failure and almost all I have seen had developed noisy tappets.

In reality it's hard to make a strong argument to buy a rover 45/ZS when if you really want one of these you can have the equivalent albeit older better built Civic with the ultra reliable honda d series engine which has all the revvy characteristics. Of the k series rover engine.
