Being forced to use your "Irish" name at school

My daughter attends a second-level gaelscoil that insists on calling her by a translation of her actual name that sound similar to her actual name but is in fact a different Irish name. She hates it and has frequently resisted it by saying to her teacher 'that's not my name'. Her teachers continually 'correct' her if she asserts that her name is her name by repeating the translated name back to her.

Should she put up with this? What does AH think?

Then you don't know anything about the process of applying for permanent residency in the US (Green Card)

So you gave her a name so it would make it easy for her to travel, she then dropped that name and changed the other one and you're blaming the school for the confusion regarding a passport and greencard?

The thread started out with the Irish name then changed to passports and other names now it's all about what name she will choose at 18, bottom line she is changing her name at 18 and this is what the thread should have been about.

You want her to have your name to make travelling easier but she has dropped it during school and you want it changed back.

That's if you pretend either inverted commas don't exist or that they don't change the meaning of a sentence in any way.

Eoin is not the Irish for John

Eoin will be equivalent of Ian which is equivalent of John which is equivalent of Jean which is equivalent of Sean. I'm sure there are many other spellings and possible variations.

But someone called John has the right to determine what they are known by, and not their teacher.

As far as i was aware, our society leaves it up to parents to name their children. It is not for a school to take its own version of this name and use it on their documents. It is frankly outrageous that anybody would defend this.
If i enrole a child in a gaelscoil or any other school, i will write the child's name on the admissions forms, what authority does a school have to change the character, spelling or language that name is written in? None.

But she is changing her name at 18 anyway, the name her parents gave her btw, the school name is only used in school, it has no bearing on the real issue imo, The issue is the name on her passport when she reaches 18yrs.

i hate it when people ask "what's your name in english?".
i blame christianity. biblical names were translated into every language that christianity infested so names like john and mary have translations in loads of languages.
my name is irish and doesn't have an english or polish version so asking for the English version makes no sense.

i'm rambling now but the point i want to make is that a name is a name. i have my irish one and if someone wants to use an english name, gaelscoil or not, they should be allowed.

Sorry if im arrogant but i fail to see how her being called Aine instead of Ann for eg in school would complicate anything.

You don't get it do you? It's not about complicating anything it's about identity! I had my Irish teacher translate my name in secondary school but I politely asked him to stop and he did. God love him if he had refused!

If you say so. I have found you to be defensive, belittling and condescending from the start of this thread but then it seems to be just you as you are quite similar in most of your threads. Sneering at people who have a different opinion to you does not equate to debating with them.

Also, the thread is 44 pages long. People are not necessarily going to remember everything that has been said in it.

It does when A. You have to show 2 years usage to change the name on a passport and more importantly B. the list of documentation is massive for a Green Card. I was at the Embassy for my interview and heard a woman who had to resubmit and start her whole application process because her documentation was Pat not Patricia as on her birth cert.

Hasn't stopped plenty of people posting their opinion on facts they've imagined might be in those 44 pages though has it.
