That said its fine for a mid priced phone. But not a top priced phone. But under 200 the 800 is a great deal and personally I think the GUI is much better than Android. The S2 is a 400+ phone though.

She's not invested in iTunes or Apple / Android eco systems so it really makes sense to get this for the cracking price on PAYG through Meteor. I'll probably sign her up to the rolling 30 day sim only play then for €20 a month that gives the 200 mins / texts and 1gb data. That'll work out a lot cheaper than trying to get a S2 etc.

BostonB wrote: » Sorry but you rubbished better hardware as being not needed. Almost all of that list has nothing to do with GUI resources. Like bigger screen, better camera, front facing camera, more storage, faster processing, future OS compatibility, etc. The 820 has clearly superior hardware to the 800. The 820 is almost identical to the S2 in hardware.
chrislad wrote: » Again, no, I didn't. Better hardware is obviously better, but there's no need to have 2gb of RAM in a WP. It doesn't need it, and you'll notice little, if any performance improvement.
From a RAM perspective, it appears that the minimum hardware requirements is dependent on the screen resolution. However, note that this is the “bare minimum” that Microsoft allows its OEMs to have in their Windows Phone 8 hardware, and we noticed that on the official Windows Phone 8 “How-to” website, a line raised our attention: Memory (RAM). Some apps and features won’t work on phones with less than 1 GB of RAM. To see how much memory your phone has, check the manufacturer’s website or your phone’s documentation. Microsoft did not specify exactly which apps or features won’t work on phones with less than 1GB of RAM. However, looking at the list of all announced Windows Phone 8 devices in our Windows Phone Gallery, we can see that most devices out there will not be affected by this limitation (Nokia decided to put 1GB of RAM for its Lumia 810, 820 and 822 phones despite having a WVGA resolution), with the exception of the HTC 8S. The lower-end HTC 8S is currently the only announced Windows Phone 8 device that features only 512 MB of RAM, which means that it may have some software limitations similar to the 256MB devices in the Windows Phone 7.x era.

chrislad wrote: » I didn't rubbish front facing cameras either, I simply said they are not used by the vast majority of people. For some people, it's necessary, but I've had very few people ask me about the quality of a front facing camera. In fact, I can think of only one, who wanted it for Skype.

DjFlin wrote: » Exactly my point. Getting the apps on time is more important than just getting them eventually. I've had a Windows Phone since Day 1, and I love it. The only problem I have with it, is the ecosystem. All OS's have trouble with their ecosystems to begin with. Android only caught up on iOS about a year ago. Windows Phone needs time to mature, and there isnt much that can be done about it by anyone. Though Microsoft could speed it up a bit by giving out free phones to Devs like they didnt when the original WP7's launched.
