Now I ain't no homophobe, BUT...

Why do gay pride parades have to be so gay? I mean if you want conservative folk to accept homosexuality, why would you prance around the streets in fish net stockings and drag queen costumes and bikinis etc.?

Gay parades are fine but the more outrageous they are the worse it'll become for the LGBT community. It will just provoke the homophobes.

Just a thought...

Any gays here that can add their opinion?

You seem to be failing to recognise that they HAVE been accorded the same rights (barring marriage, which is an issue that's still somewhat up in the air) and have been accepted into society, except by homophobic people who will more than likely never change.

The marriage thing is being worked on, and so far is proceeding well. These things take time, considering homosexuality was illegal up til 19 years ago.

As for not being accepted into society - absolutely nobody is accepted by every single person. You may as well say I'm not accepted in society because I'm female and some people are sexist.

The messed up thing is that while its acceptable to have a gay parade that features men in thongs, dressed up as women (in skimpy outfits) etc .... its not allowed for women in a parade to wear such outfits.

Imagine a St. Patricks Day float next year. All women in bikinis, g-strings or what not. How is that not acceptable but yet a gay parade is?

I'm all for equal rights. But thats the thing .... equal.

Well first of all I don't think that Gay Prides are possible in Uganda because it's so homophobic. The tactics that gay LGBT groups use in more liberal country is to sift out those who are still living in the past, and it works to an extent.

Hell yeah it is. I've seen similar outfits on parade in Ireland too. I've even danced down a main street in a boob tube and miniskirt myself, as part of a group representing a sea wave.

That's a lot of skin on show for a parade of just 50-odd people in a country where homosexuality is a capital offence. Using a tiny gathering in a country where everyone who attended risked the death penalty is hardly a fair comparison.

You'll never see me dead at a pride parade and at first when I was coming to grips with my sexuality, I thought these guys were nothing I wanted to be like and to be truthful, at the time, I was repulsed because I was so far from them and any gay stereotype.

Now that said, I've grown up and come to realise there's no harm in it. In fact, there are many flamboyant and really "gay" camp men out there who get a very hard time because they're not "normal", so they march and are proud of themselves because they can't help it.

One thing I've learned from being gay is not to judge anyone. Sure how hypocritical would I be if I wanted acceptance but threw down on some types of people? Honestly, if it doesn't effect you and it's not hurting anyone, then what harm?

Definitely not my thing but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Sure a lot of it can make me cringe, but I don't care about any sort of image they might be creating. I'll make my own image for myself and I'll let people judge me for that, not by some gay pride parade.

Yea I see where you are coming from, I'm a straight guy and have been present at gay pride parades in London and Toronto and some of it has been more about exhibitionism than homosexuality but in fairness I saw a lot of gay people complaining about that to the police present at the time.

But at the end of the day boys like girls, girls like boys, some boys like boys, some girls like girls and some people like everyone.

That's how it is. That's life. Who gives a **** and any one that does needs to have a long look in the mirror and get a grip of reality and move on with there own existence.

But yea as a movement I think the guys who decide to dress in only a cowboy hat, boots and a guitar covering there manhood at 3pm in the day they're doing themselves no good and holding the rest back at present.

I'm not saying it's a problem for a boy to like a boy or a girl to like a girl.

But some aspects of these parades are bordering on exhibitionism, fetishism, S&M, bondage etc. which really should be kept within the confines of ones bedroom!

There was one photo of a gay parade I saw and there was a guy shoving a dildo up his arse in broad daylight!!! This was San Fransico though... but still. They're not helping "the cause" at all.

It's the same way al-Qaeda aren't helping moderate muslims.

No I'm not comparing gays to terrorists but you get my drift.

Yeah, I get your drift. I got exactly the same drift from a friend recently when he also claimed that the Amsterdam pride festival was also full of such described in detail debauchery. He was also disgusted at how obscene and "gay" it is

But then, it was broadcast live on youtube and the most obscene thing to be seen was one guy waving about an obviously handdrawn cartoon cardboard penis with an advert for a shoe company on it. There was literally nothing I would have been upset about my kids seeing.

I searched for the image you mentioned, man+ shoving+ dildo+ up+ ass+ San+ Fransisco+ gay+ pride+ parade+ and many permutations thereof, and I found nothing. Is there perhaps a specialist site I wouldn't have thought of checking to find this daylight obscenity, or should I take just your word for it?

What does San Fransciso have to do with anywhere else, anyway?

I bring my kids to gay pride parades. I haven't seen much worse than assless leather chaps with jocks underneath and to be honest, that's just clothes.

Tell me, what is worse than said bondage gear? I can't imagine anything more pervy looking than bondage gear but I'd love to know what trumps it!

It's an old term that attempted to justify the reaction of others to gay people by labelling it a phobia.

It very seldom is anything of the sort, and "homist" (like sexist / racist) would be a much more accurate term.
