Suppose when you're not afraid of the tackle, these things are going to happen. We're strong in midfield anyway so I don't think we'll miss him too much, although I agree with Rory in that he was coming into form again recently - it's a shame. Plenty of decent options anyway which is a great position to be in. We'll miss an injured midfielder less than an injured striker, that's for sure.

"I'm aware of interest but I'm not aware of any offers," Lennon said of South Korean Ki. "I think there is interest from Southampton in Kris. I will try and fend off any offers that come in." "To have him back for the second half of the season is a huge bonus," said the Celtic boss. "He came in at this time last year and scored 14 in 18 so it's like having a new player. "I want to keep all my players here. Everyone has their price but it would have to be a huge, huge offer for us to even consider it. "It doesn't surprise me that a number of clubs are looking at [Ki] and various other players but, for me, they would be wasting their time."
"There is no pressure on me to trim the squad at all. "There may be players who want to go and play or move on for personal reasons, get some game time elsewhere, but no one has come knocking on my door yet."

We are in a good position where we don't have to sell so we can drive a hard bargain for these players. I've heard clubs are prepared to offer upwards of 8 million for Ki, I would sell if that sort of money is offered. So long as the money is reinvested in the team. We could do with another striker, if not now then in the summer. Bangura looks to be a flop at this stage.

the realpigiron wrote: » Just from what Lenny said in the article that Dempsey linked: If a big offer comes in for Ki, they might take the money in the knowledge that his loss should not be detrimental to the teams chances of lifting the title. A big offer would be in excess of 8 million. Celtic can hold out for a big offer because they are not compelled to sell. Like I said as long as they spend the money on other signings, I think with the proliferation of midfielders we have, it could make sense to punt Ki. But only if someone from England offered silly money.
Dempsey wrote: » "Huge, huge offer" would mean something more than £8m for a player like Ki considering he has a huge commercial value, a value that has increased with his Korean player of the year award. Also consider the Kayal situation, I think that should kill any talk of him moving because Lennon needs the title to secure his job. We paid over £2m at the time and considering the business that we were doing at the time, player wise, it was a sizeable investment and risk. We know that EPL clubs, like Liverpool, are looking for Asian players to tap into that market. We have that, and we NEED that considering the financial climate of the SPL. Unless Ki indicates that he isnt willing to extend his contract or falls out with Lennon, or something bad, Celtic will want to keep him because over the duration of the time he'll spend here we will see the bones of that sort of money in commercial revenue. Lawwell has been looking for the next Nakamura, i.e. where talent meets commercial value, and I think he has found it, albeit after a good few flops. Considering how hard he now knows it is to find such a player, I doubt and hope he's not willing to part easily and thank god the financial side of the club is in a state that the decision is our hands and no decision will be made to appease banks or external creditors. I think Ki can be lacking urgency at (most)times but he has shown remarkable improvement in his game since he joined and there is no reason he cant improve more by the looks of it. If Celtic are looking to get back to auto UCL qualification, its by not taking those sort of offers because you are selling at a premium but to get value for re-investment you really need to wait until the summer and thats a risk that can blow up in your face. Look at Baba Diawara, we had him at £2m but his passport paperwork was a mess and it didnt happen. We are now looking at £4m because he is showing the form that the club thought he could produce and he now has several suitors. On that note, what ever the scouting network have been doing lately, its been brilliant. They are finding gem after gem and I hope they keep it up. I dunno whether it was Strachan & Mowbray having blinkers on but they sure found alot of duds for them.

Or has anyone really seen much of him? West Ham apparently had a £3m offer rejected, and Lee Clark is adamant he's not selling him, so could be around the £4m-5m bracket

the realpigiron wrote: » Good post. It's a balancing act weighing up when to hold on to a valuable player and when to punt him. We don't always get it right. It's part of Celtic's way of operating to find rough diamonds with talent , improve them as players and then sell at the optimum price, due to the financial constraints of playing in the SPL. What would Ki's optimum value be do you think? All things considered 8 million plus wouldn't be a bad return I reckon. It probably would be better to keep him for now and not sell in January for example. However as against that, when everyone is fit in midfield, Ki is on the bench. If he's on the bench, his value may drop. Hard to get that balancing act right.
