You can be guaranteed at least 20 fights that night too, dunno why, but the locals love a good fight on Christmas night here.

People who complain about pubs being closed on Christmas day and Good Fruday are usually the people who would want to go out and protest if bank holidays were to be got rid of.

I know a few bar staff who are completely against a Christmas day or Good Friday opening as they are two days that they know they have off, most of them work every bank holiday and will spend tomorrow and New Years eve pulling pints for everyone else. With that in mind they're entitled to be guaranteed at least Cheistmas day off.

I just came in here to post this too.

Doors are open at 11.45, bar at 12. The only night of the year the place is REALLY busy.

And fúck me, do they like their fights. Parkies V Townies, Local lads V everyone else.

I was chatting to one of my mates last night and asked him if he was going tonight, he said 'no way, there was only about 50 people in it last year, and they all killed each other'. I wasn't here last year, or most of the previous 4-5 christmas nights.

The last time I went to it I was about 18.

The parkies don't all stick together to fight the rest of the town though. It's usually anyone from clones v anyone from clones...or anyone from outside of clones v all of clones!!

The argument that you think bar staff deserve the day off is irrelevant, because it has nothing to do with the reason that there is a ban on selling alcohol on Christmas day and Good Friday while at the same time there is no ban on general shops or petrol stations being open on the same days. It's a religious rule that should be abandoned. If you want to make an argument that a law should be brought in to force businesses in general to close on certain days then that's a completely separate thing.

Also the argument that we should keep it just because it's tradition is bizarre and lazy.

Some traditions start for stupid reasons, doesn't mean its not a nice tradition to keep even if the origins are irrelevant.

I really don't see why anyone would want to go the pub on Christmas Day.

The whole point of the day is that it's a break from the normal routine, a day to sit back and take it easy, preferably with one's friends and family when possible.

Why anyone would want to go out into the cold and rain to do something they can do 363 days of the year (and I don't see how the pub would be any better on Christmas Day compared to every other day) is a mystery to me.

I know some people might be alone on Christmas and I think it'd be nice for them to have something to go to, especially early in the day when most people are having dinner.
But it's not as though the pub/club is the only option for enjoying oneself on Christmas Day, and it's only one day to wait till Stephen's Day!
Surely people can manage to be away from the pub for one day!

Personally, what I like about Christmas is that almost everything bar essential services are shut down for one day.

And there's also the issue of the rights of the people who would have to provide these services.
Ideally it'd be nice if everyone had the right to go to the pub, do their shopping etc on Christmas Day, but I think any employees should have the right not to work if they didn't want to, without fear of punishment. As mentioned earlier, that'd be hard to put into practice.

Maybe what would be best would be if pubs could legally be open on Christmas Day like, I believe, shops can, but like most shops, the owners chose to keep the pub closed to give themselves and their employees a day off.

Theres nothing stoppign any pub deciding to close any night of the year they choose to have some time off. They could even choose to keep closing on Christmas day. They should be able to choose to open though.

What if their other half is a Garda, a nurse, a doctor , a fireman, ESB employee or other essential staff such as the people keeping the television I'm sure you like to watch on Christmas day on air. It's ok for them to work yeah? but not barstaff? lenty of garages and newsagents open today too. But sure once the precious barstaff have the day off thats all that matters.

The UK seems to cope just fine without descendign into Chaos on Christmas day just because a few pubs are open.

Right then the solution is that only bars whose employees are married to Guards, Nurses, etc should be allowed open on Christmas day. As far as I'm concerned those garages and shops should also close, in Ballina where I come from only one shop opens on Christmas day and the owner is well known as a miserable, tight git. He jacks up the prices off all his stock for the day and has been know to charge 15 euro for four AA batteries.

No one should be faced with a situation where they have to spent Chrisymas day working away from their families. And before you mention the Guards and Nurses, is it not tradition that those who don't have family work that day. I know my aunt who never married or had kids used to volunteer to cover the Christmas shift as did others in a silicate situation to her. They did do that those with children or a husband could have the day together.

By the way, I don't watch TV on Christmas day. It's a tradition we have has at home since I was a child.
