I like my zombie films to be ridiculous though...if i want realism i'll watch turn on the Beeb and watch a nice docy-wocy.

As for decent modern zombie films, Dead Snow was fantastic. Peter Jackson's Braindead, Land Of The Dead, Black Sheep for another comedy, and Dead Meat, the Irish zombie flick. There are plenty, you just have to find them.

I think it's more the kind of stuff where you see zombies ripping bodies apart with their bare hands that he's getting at. That kind of thing is just silly imo

I like the Dawn of the Dead too. Still hate chainsaws because of that movie! :mad:

I'm sick to my back teeth of ridiculous, it's been done to death, I want some realism and some thought put into the plot. The original zombie film was about characters trapped in a frightening world, gore had little to do with it.

There are other problems with having no pain threshold, namely that your body will rip itself apart rendering the zombie completely useless and weak within hours. zombies cannot bite through human skin with great effect, they can't rip a body apart and they most certainly can't run.

Agreed, it's the unfortunate need for gore in movies. Much better to just see someone go down under a weight of numbers without all the gut pulling.

That said, the idea of a zombie outbreak is pretty much dismissible due to common sense...chances are a hungry dog would take a single zombie in a straight fight.

Agreed that zombie outbreaks defy common sense but so do all sorts of other movies genres (action, superhero, romance, aliens) - it's making them seem like it could actually happen that makes them so appealing. I don't mind zombies running but pulling the body apart seems silly. Not sure about scenes in which zombies eat their own bodies

I guess. I'm only really familiar with the modern zombie films, which seem to be mostly based around virus/disease type scenarios. Usually once a zombie bites a human, the human is doomed. I would have thought the same the other way round?

More frightening too, imagine being under a pile of people biting and scraping you, the bites not strong enough to do any real fatal damage so your in there until you eventually die or turn.

The traditional bitey zombies couldn't spread the virus fast enough, but if it spread like the common cold we'd all be fudged.

EDIT: Actually that's an other problem with zombie films, how come the people covered in zombie blood don't get infected? You shouldn't be able to hack and slash your way through zombies getting bits of them in your mouth and eyes without becoming infected.

To my mind it would depend.

If someone is bitten by a zombie and turns zombie then it implies that the infection is causes by something in the saliva, this may not be present in the blood. If it was, every time someone got zombie blood on them they would probably turn zombie if they had any little scraps or cuts or even a freshly squeezed spot.

In my head, if you bite a zombie then all you get is a mouthful of decomposing meat and coagulated blood...but that is dependent on the whole thing being based on zombie biting to pass on whatever the infection is.

Exactly. One of my favourite bits of World War Z was the guy in the body armour who gets trapped under all the zombies.

No suspense? You couldn't even feel safe in the same room as someone you know, the zombies would be there in numbers straight away looking to attack you only that they could puke or spit the disease at you. Gore is not suspense.

It would be nice to see some kind of blend of a zombie film and the new film Contagion. I'd like to think i could do some damage to a zombie horde...not much i can do against microscopic death.

I didn't say gore is suspense. Having a shrieking horde of zombies running after you or banging at your door is. You wouldn't feel safe from a cold but sure you'd turn zombie without ever knowing it. Boring

Yeah but it's important to think about the main stumbling block of most zombie movies now...the characters will quickly figure out that it is a bite that transfer the disease...if people that were not bitten started to get sick people would just think they were sick and try to help them, so they sadly themselves with these folk that need to be helped only to have them turn into zombies and eat their faces.

How crap is that? Suspense is born from a lack of knowledge...so if you remove that part of the lore you can amp up the suspense for the characters and also the audience.

It's very possible that the recently turned will be able to run, because no decay has set in. However as time passes, they'll become the shambling mess that usually gets depicted.

I think the most plausible depiction of life post-outbreak is in the novels Feed and Deadline.
