"Woofers" Guide - Quick overview of the pieces/rules. Site also features a few chess puzzles ranging from simple-moderately difficult . A good starting point!
US Chess Federation Beginner's Page - Small site with a few pointers on improving your game.

Chess Strategy/Tactics:
Wiki's Chess Tactics page - Great introduction to tactics. This is a must-read for any beginner as it comprehensively outlines the various types of attacks and sequences utilised. Being fully aware of how to set up the types of situations outlined is vital to evolving your game.
Chess Tactics Server - More problems to be solved/tactics discussed.
Chess trainer - All levels of problems to be solved.

Chess Openings:
Chessops Basic Guide to Openings - Great site boasting 8000+ unique board positions amongst other things. Great breakdown of openings.

Game/Strategy Analysis:

Youtube Channel: Chessvideos - Chess video analysis on youtube. Great breakdowns ranging from openers to tactics to endgame study.
Youtube Channel: Jrobichess - This youtube channel tracks a beginner's progress through chess. He started in '07 and has 74 videos as of July 2008. Mostly openings and analysis of concepts as well as matches.
Youtube Channel: GreenCastleBlock - Good videos off a highly rated player. He breaks down matches and has a few good endgame videos.
Youtube Channel: ChessNetwork - Really good game analysis off a National Master player. He's very good at explaining his logic.

It means Knight takes f7, i.e. Knight captures piece on f7. And so on.

That's got to be the funniest Irish chess webpage I've seen yet. Puts the Brian Wall chess list to shame.

Also, so far nobody's mentioned:

ChessVibes.com - News from the chess world and a nice weekly magazine for chess improvement (puzzles and annotated games) and another on chess openings.

Youtube Channel for ChessOpenings.com - lots of 10-15min videos introducing various chess openings in a nice, clear format.

ChessTempo.com - tactics puzzles and endgame puzzles; slightly better than the chess.com tactics puzzles because of the timer not putting the whole "blitz chess" pressure on (which is fine when you know the tactical motif and want to have a flashcard type approach but not so great when you're first learning them). Plus, I've only seen one other site that does endgame puzzles and that's the endgame simulator cdeb mentioned on the Benildus website.

Chess Forks Trainer - simple little thing for helping speed learning the fork points and skewer points for various pieces.

And for my money, one of the best sources out there for beginners: Dan Heisman's Novice Nook columns, all gathered in one place by Dan.

Also, for those moments after you make the most obvious, most forehead-off-the-desk-stupid of blunders, [url=https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/17587/257878.pdf[/url] shows some of the greatest names in chess (Alekeine, Karpov, Petrosian, Fischer and others) making some stupendous blunders - hung queens, missing hung queens, missed mate-in-two, the works. Which is a bit spirit-lifting after a bad day

This series in the Guardian, which sadly finished last year, was excellent. A GM and a novice (former youth champion, I think, but since lapsed) discuss positions. Interesting to see the differences between what each sees.
