Have to get this off my chest...

Curry chip

So one of my friends has a provisional driving license and he was driving around with no licensed driver and no L plates. He was stopped at a Garda check point and the Guards let him off with no fine, no warning or anything! They said they weren't fining people because of the recession!
I know he is my friend but this annoys me!!
How many other people are they letting off from fines? In my opinion, a car is a luxury. If you can afford to run a car then you should be prepared to take the crap that comes with it if you don't follow the rules!
What else are they letting people away with? With the state of the country at the moment, should they not be fining people and putting the money back into the economy or something?!

Maybe I'm wrong but I just think it's a bit of a joke!

Would you be complaining if you were in a situtation where you were stopped by a garda but wasn't fined? it's easy to point the finger and say, hey you should be punished. But what if it were you? would you complain and say that as gardaí they should enforce the law and fine you for something, that in all fairness if rather trivial compared to the worse things that go on in the road. I mean it's not like your friend was under the influence or was driving dangerously. He was driving without an L learners plate and making such a fuss about something like that is quite ridiculous. No offense.

In the United State for instance, the Cops don't even give drivers breatalisers when they've been drinking and driving. They just ask them to walk on a line and if they seem ok to the cop, they usually just let them go without a fine or anything. But my point is, just let it go and accept that someone didn't get punished for breaking a law. It dosen't really affect you so there's no need to complain.

I simply explained what happened. I never said anything bad about my friend. It's not his fault the guards didn't do their job properly! And actually it was my friend who laughed at the guards as well for letting him away with so much!

Why do learner drivers bother driving on their own without a fully licenced holder with them? Why be watching your back in case they get in trouble with the law. It makes no sense. What if they conked out and couldn't get the car to move at a junction or at a hill or in a line of traffic or hit something they are liable!? They might think they are insured to drive but they aren't insured to drive on their own. They are only insured to drive a car unless they're accompanied with a fully licenced holder (of two years at least)

I learned to drive back when driving by yourself wasn't allowed but it really was and most of the learning I did was alone. I hated being in the car with an instructor or someone telling me what to do. It really held me back and as soon as I started heading out myself I got much better. Also, I recently taught my ex how to drive and basically made her start going out by herself. The progress she made when she started by herself was unbelievable. It's a stupid rule. They should just make you have a few lessons and then the instructor can sign off on you driving alone pretty quickly imo.

As for the garda letting him off, sure he's just being sound. It's not all that often the garda will be sound so it should be celebrated when it happens. A few months ago i was driving along with a joint and a garda caught me. He let me off, now that was a sound garda.

The small laws against stuff like having a joint or driving alone with a learner licence should only be imposed on scumbags if you ask me.

If you read my reply to another person you would see that I have already said I am a fully licensed driver and I do own my own car which I worked very hard for.

I am perfectly entitled to have my own opinion. I have listened to what everyone elses and tried to explain my views as best I can. If you want to make a point then make it. There's no need to be rude.

I'd say the gardai let people of with stuff all the time (see my post above). The garda was most likely cracking a joke after he had already decided to let him off. Driving without a full licence is hardly robbing a post office. I was stopped for speeding once when I had L plates and wasn't even asked about a licensed driver. Was a good while ago mind. They don't do everyone you know.

What does OP mean?! (Sorry I'm new!) Maybe he was. I don't know. I just never heard of someone getting away with breaking the law because of the recession

I know it's not the worst law you can break or anything but in black and white, the law is the law and I just find it so silly that they are using the recession for an excuse!!! Now everyone is going to think they can get away with anything!

No it doesnt mean that. Im just stating what has been said by many gardai.
The insurers have also agreed that they are covering these drivers while driving alone so you can see that there is a certain amount of the 'blind eye' being used in relation to this offence.
BE it right or wrong, this is what is happening.

I never drove without a fully licensed driver when I had my provisional license. That is the truth.
I don't really care if you believe me or not. When I originally posted this I was looking for opinions off people. I didn't go looking for abuse. If you are just going to be smart and petty then don't bother writing.

I have alot of friends driving around on L plates by themselves. I on dove once by myself and that was because my best friend was trying to kil hmself and the guy's parents called me to try to help them to talk him around. In my experience the gardaí leaves people off alot of the time. They only time they will take the car off the people is when they are driving dangerously or if your in a city.

She gave a made up story about only just starting to drive to work so didnt know the roads that well etc. so he just sent her on her way.
