Scratch Cups

The new season is upon us and the Scratch Cup calendar will shortly be in full swing. I've played in a handful of these over the past few years (Headfort, Naas, St. Margaret's, Dundalk, Westmanstown) with only Headfort being one where I'd make an extra special effort to play in again.

My question to you is which Scratch Cups (Junior or Intermediate) do you look fwd to each year and why?

Lol...look at the ego's here!!! As somebody who has played both Carlow and Dundalk, I would say that Carlow is the better stretch. I can understand why somebody would call Carlow a pitch and putt course, as 8 of the 27 holes, play less than 400 yards.

However I much prefer it to Dundalk, which seems very confused in its layout.

There is no doubt that Carlow is a fantastic course, if a little short, but still tricky!!

Lads what's Dundalk like? I see the JSC is 36 holes and not expensive to play in.

I would be playing it blind if I do choose to play. Is it quite tight? Going from the score card it long enough and it'll be off the blue's too. As courses go is local knowledge very important or could I turn up and its all in front of me type of place??

Dundalk is very wide, you can give your drives a good belt. All par 4s/5s need a driver off the tee (no playing up anywhere)
Theres only one green out of sight (the 8th) the rest is what you see is what you get. All par 3's are +150meters and you can reach 2 of the 4 par 5s in 2 depending on the direction of the wind.
Deffo recommend it

Wide open? Had a quick look at Kevin's book 'Hooked' and he talks about it being fairly tree lined, a classic treelined parkland type of course is the impression I got.

Anyone else got any info on the course?

My brother was a member there for a couple of years and I've played it half a dozen times. It is lined with mature trees with "wide-ish" fairways. There are some good long par 4's that can play longer into a stiff breeze. There are very few holes where you'll be hitting less than a 6-iron in. Also has a very spacious practice area. A good course but one which I always felt was never presented in tip-tip condition, e.g. greens were good without being great and the place always looked in need of a cutting.

Deffo Carlow for me if I had the choice.

I'm gonna head to Slade Valley and South County junior scratchs this weekend. I know Dundalk and Carlow are on, and I'm not a fan of SV, but I know both courses well and always regret heading to a course I don't know for 36 holes strokes off the back tees.

I actually like both courses. Mount Temple is in better condition but Athlone is a lot harder (for me anyway!)

Simply because Carlow is a far superior course to the other two no matter what way you look at it.

There are plenty of ways to look at it.

Maybe you should come to terms with the fact that a lot of people don't like Carlow golf course. And there is nothing wrong with that is there...

Played athlone there yesterday evening, gonna leave it at that - started raining on the second hole and never stopped. Wind picked up then to rub it in, disaster!!!

I'll have to meet you for a game in carlow some weekend F22 and you can show me around!!

I'm guessing here, but i'd say poor uptake. I played it last weekend and the greens are in an awful state. Barton Shield was on there so i'd imagine most of their target audience was put off the place and word has spread.

I haven't played on worse greens in summer ever.

I got the text too. Would've been more disappointed if it was a good course but still. Might head to South County instead. No idea what its like though!

Despite being such a poor course as links go, the condition of the places is pretty shocking. Those sort of numbers speak volumes, good to see people voting with their feet for a change.

Played in it a couple of years ago and was a great turnout with a very strong field so was surprised to hear numbers was the issue but I also wouldn’t have put my name down knowing the greens were in bits!

Go play South County or the K Club one now. South County should be in good condition after the Leinster Boys this week.

Are you actually for real? Galway isn't a good course??? Granted it's not the best course in the west of Ireland as they like to claim but it is a very good course.

Re. St annes, i got numerous texts and calls about playing it and then got the text to say it was cancelled. Greens were terrible for the barton shield...would have been a huge turn off for what is their target market...

Just a reminder for Senior and Junior scratch players that Malahide have a top golfer event next Sunday. 36 holes for the senior scratch and will use all three nines. The red nine has been redeveloped and is really worth seeing.

Played it last week, the red 9 really is cracking. a couple of very long par 4's.

Eek, only 14 names in for Malahide Senior by the looks of it. Poor.

There doesn't seem to be an appetite for Senior Scratches at all really - less than 10 for St Annes, 20 or so at South County, 14 for Malahide.

Not enough ego massaging at these places for them?
