Welcome to the Galway Summer Thread!
We've decided to try a thread for everyone looking for things to do: tourists, students, stags, hens or just people wanting to promote a cool event.
There is already an almighty thread here with tons of suggestions of activities but this thread is for summer only, the other is general activities (Pubs/clubs/eats/fun things/links).

The boring stuff you must read anyway:

This thread is the only place in this forum you can post an event.
Established posters only, by that we mean - please don't register simply to try to bring people to your pub/club/sauna/restaurant. We like to know who we're dealing with.
No fund raisers unless there is special event connected to it.

The cool stuff:
What we want to see in this thread - music events, arts events, any free events, any cool stuff that happens from now until when September ends.
If you have an event that repeats you may re-post but it has to have new value i.e. a new artist or something.

We allow some chat but will remove clutter. If you want to discuss an event in detail/get people to go with then maybe a thread in Gig Buddies is best.
Old expired events and chat are removed to keep thread fresh.
Note that the scope of the thread may change as this is the first time we've tried this. Please bear with us as we try to find a good format for it.

Galway to host first brewers festival in May

In the first event of its kind in the west of Ireland, the Brewers On The Bay festival will bring craft brewers from microbreweries all over the country to Salthill on May 1 and 2.

The finest products from Irish independent brewing companies will be available throughout the May Bank Holiday weekend, kicking off at 3pm on May 1 at The Oslo in Salthill. Admission is free.

Brewers who will be showcasing their finest beers include Galway’s Bay Brewery and Galway Hooker, Porter House and Messrs Maguire (Dublin), Carlow Brewery and White Gypsy (Tipperary).

The Oslo is home to Bay Brewery, producing its own ale and lager on the premises. The public can see first hand how the beer is brewed in the Oslo and tours will be given on the day. Those attending will also be able to take home a ‘home brew’ kit to make their own personalised beer.

Event organiser James Connell hopes this festival will encourage the creation of more craft breweries in Ireland.

The Brewers On The Bay festival is something we decided to do because there are just not enough craft brewers here in Ireland,” he said. “These guys are masters in this industry. Local guys are making beers for locals and I hope Galway people come out and support them.”

Critical Mass Galway Bike Ride is on May 1st, 11.00am. Starting from the gate to NUIG and then looping around the town. Talk of heading to the Brewers on the Bay event that evening as well. No need for registration, just turn up at the gate of NUIG with a bike.

Annual Car boot Sale in Aid of Renmore Gymnastics Club

Once again Renmore gymnastics club are having their now very popular annual fundraising car boot sale.

It’ll be on Bank Holiday Monday May 3rd from 10:30am. Support is well appreciated. €15 per car €25 per Van

Sellers advised to arrive at 10am as there was huge interest and places may be limited

A terrific day out for the family there will be a gymnastics display and face painting. Go on de-clutter, recycle and pick up a bargain to boot….

ROUND IRELAND POWERBOAT RACE

June 5th - 12th 2010

Best way to describe it will be a "Mini Volvo stopover". There is big interest as a lot of accomodation that i'm trying to book is already booked out.

Some highlights:
June 5th: Boats arrive in Galway
June 6th: Galway Powerboat & Watersports Club host ISA PWC (JetSki) Slalom championship which will hopefully be happening just ouside the Dock gates, meaning there will be a view from Nimmo's Pier, Docks, Galway Harbour Enterprise Park
June 7th: Round Ireland boats leave Galway
June 5th - 7th: P1 Superstock racing (Salthill)
June 12th: P750 (Zapcat / Thundercat) Cross-Border championships (Salthill)

It's going to be a busy week

It better be at the gym, because I've just spent an hour wandering around Parkmore in the rain looking for it. My feet are killing me, but I figured I'd get lost well in advance so as not to miss it. If that's where this is being held, for those that don't know, it's near the Galway Racecourse. You have to head up towards the racecourse, then turn off to the right just before the timber yard. If you're going by bus, get the number 9 from Eyre Square and get off at the big Fortis building, then walk back past the Spar.

The last one of this season's Lunchtime Theatre @ Kelly's Bar on Bridge St is tomorrow, Wed 28th. This week has an 'allsorts' of music, short snippets of theatre and storytelling, and is excellent!

I know they are starting another season, June, I think. 1pm usually and only a fiver in. It's a lovely space upstairs, and you can relax with a bitta grub, coffee, and have some arty time for an hour! Excellent idea, returning to the fab days of The Kings Head style lunchtimes...craic!

Myslef and five work colleagues are having a Photo Exhibition in Ballybane library, launching this Saturday at 2:30 by Michael D Higgins. Finger food and wine for all.

The exhibition will consists of 18 photographs from 6 photographers. Many of the photos are from the Galway area.

Exhibition to run until the end of May and framed photos will be available for purchase. Please feel free to drop in.

Galway City Council, in conjunction with Galway Atlantaquarium, are organising the biggest ever coastal clean-up in Ireland next Sunday, 16th May. Clean-ups will commence at 12 and will take 1 - 1.5 hours.

In addition to collecting the litter, we will keep a record of items collected and we will use this informatio in future campaigns to stop the littering of our coastline and ouroceans.

Clean-ups will be conducted at beaches and coastal areas throughout Galway City - Rinville (Oranmore); Ballyloughane (Renmore); Lough Atalia; Claddagh; Grattan, Salthill and Silverstrand.

I know this is a small thing compared to the Volvo Ocean Race last year, but will there be entertainment (concerts etc like last June!!!!

Yup, it'll be free entertainment. While there won't be as much off-the-water entertainment (smaller budget so can't have concerts every night), there will be lot's of racing off Salthill. As for on-the-water activity... watching yachts race 2 miles off shore isin't exactly exciting, but there'll be JetSki's, SuperStock & P750's buzzing around Salthill just off the shore

Hey, is there still a Galway Theatre Festival every summer? I remember staying in Galway for a weekend during one a few years back. Now myself and a few buds are thinking of travelling up for a weekend if a similar event was on?

As Biko mentioned, there's a bunch of theatre in the Arts Festival, but honestly I think there'll be a load of Fringe theatre around that time too.

Kelly's Lunchtime Theatre season starts again and runs June and July (I think it is only Mon-Wed for most shows, but some will have more)

The Galway Theatre Fest is Oct, see here
