Personally, I can't talk to someone who doesn't spell properly in a text. The same applies for emails.

It is the first thing you learn in school... why do people still insist on writing things as they hear them?

I try my best to write quite concisely and dear got txt speak pisses me right off..

But to be honest, I'd be lost without spell check or that red line that firefox gives me under words I've misspelled.

Being able to spell = intelligent? No.

For me, absolutely zero punctuation whatsoever - as in, no full stops or commas or dashes to indicate pauses - makes things difficult to read in places, but otherwise, once I understand what they're saying, that's sufficient.

I'm not dyslexic myself but sometimes when I use spellcheck it throws up different words entirely to what you're trying to spell. Can only imagine how tricky it is for someone with dyslexia.

In school I was told to try and figure out how something is spelt according to how it sounds. Then again, I also needed to use vowels to get the spelling right.

With "texts," due to limited character sizes, people cut out "vwls" to utilise more space. Unfortunately, kids took this up as a force of habit. Those kids 10 years ago are becoming older now and cutting out "vwls" is considered the norm amongst them.

I do agree, it's shocking seeing my little sister do this, but that's how langauge...er... developes *Shudders*...

Yeah I totally get that. I'm the same.

In saying that, I by no means think dyslexic people are stupid in any way (just to clear that up, in case i'm taken up wrong).

TBH it depends on whether the Op is talking about in general or just on the Internet when they have the spell check option but just can't be bothered to use it.

There's a difference between being completely unable to spell and being too damn lazy to bother re-reading your post. You can very easily tell the difference between the two. I don't think either are a sign of intelligence, but I'll definitely spend less time looking at obviously sloppy posts.

A mate of mine can't spell to save his life because his education was sub-par, to say the least. His text messages used to be a complete nightmare to read, but since T9 became the standard, he's doing a lot better and often makes up entirely new and brilliant phonetic spellings for everyday words. (Numoania)

I'm pretty easy-going about slips and mistakes, but I don't think dyslexia is an excuse for laziness. It's been shown to be misdiagnosed in a very large number of cases anyhow.

I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt, but I probably won't be impressed by someone who, say, doesn't know the difference between "being" and "been."

If someone's writing was littered with lots of spelling mistakes then I'd be inclined to rate their intelligence lower. I don't really care if I'd be wrong in a minority of cases, I'm sure time would correct that mistake for me, but if you don't put any effort into something as fundamental as spelling I'm not going to give you the benefit of the doubt.

I'm dyslexic and I always use it for emails, I don't send hand written letters because my hand writing is cat but anything I have to post, I'll type and spell check.

I could not be arsed on thing's like boards and facebook and IM's and crap though.

I like good spelling and it's always been a strong point for me. However, I wouldn't judge a persons intelligence on it. Now punctuation, or the lack of, really annoys me. There is no excuse for it!

My sense of smell has no affect on my spelling whatsoever

I'm pretty pedantic about spelling and grammar, but I don't think good spelling and intelligence are related. I know some dyslexic people who are extremely intelligent.

I do wince at txt spk and the likes. Recently I emailed a travel agent with an enquiry about a flight I wanted to book. The reply I got ended with "Do u want me 2 book it 4 u?" I went with a different travel agent in the end!
